This is serious, rigorous analysis and it should change the way the media has been covering these protests. These were, in the aggregate, *massive.*

Also, in relative size at smaller places, many were enormous For example I went to one in a town of <3000 people; the No Kings event was estimated at 1200

In my opinion, Trump's shift on this issue ("stop raiding farms and hotels") demonstrates the US needs to have an honest conversation about the role of undocumented immigrants in this country. And who constitutes this population. I'm afraid the rhetoric has already poisoned the well.

Do people who aren’t old like me know that murder and bombings were used as a tactic against abortion clinics and providers, with a lot of them happening in the 1990s? I feel like maybe a lot of people don’t know this.

Remarkable how ticky-tacky the parade looks. To say that this is the kind of thing we see in North Korea is both substantively true and an insult to the North Koreans.

thing i'm always on about one of the reasons why you can't "do things the way they did in the 60s" as lefties are scolded so often to do is that media made a move towards not reporting on protests instead of front page smearing so as to smother oxygen. and this applies to regular lib protests too

Why you need to rank Mamdani — even if he’s at #5 — in addition to not ranking Cuomo www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

The political assassinations in MN = domestic terrorism. A reminder that the guy now running the DHS division responsible for combating domestic terror & targeted attacks is a 22 yr old with no federal experience, and whose last job was his own lawn mowing biz. Dems should now be screaming this.

I had a vague feeling it was a good call but no real reason to say so, but in retrospect it is so clear that independent of ANYTHING else, the side-by-side optics are going to be devestating.

Remarkable. MSNC: "I want to reiterate this has been 100% peaceful." Seconds later, LA County sheriffs start firing on the crowd. Yet again, "law enforcement" deliberately escalated.

It’s really heartbreaking to think of all of the other ways the millions of dollars of parade money could have been spent to truly support our military. It could have helped active duty service members and veterans in need… for example, just imagine if it had gone toward supporting the VA instead.

To those who still somehow say you’re overreacting to say we are far past the point of historic crisis, go back to summer 2024 and say that in less than a year the president of the United States would be deploying the literal Marines on American soil to deal with and intimidate his political enemies

One big problem with ICE doing WHAT THEY'VE BEEN DOING--besides the fact that it's straight-up evil? It's horribly destructive in the abstract, too. Because they're literally conditioning people to expect unidentified assholes with no accountability to assault and possibly kidnap them.

More of this please!!! From everywhere!

Harvey Fierstein: "This was no time to hide. We needed to go to war." That was true in 1982, and it's true today. #TonyAwards

The core conceit of the Twitter-remainers who insist it bad for the people who left Twitter that they left Twitter is that they'd rather be in a place filled with Nazis and white supremacists than a place filled with lefties and progressives—and believe it's wrong for others to feel the opposite.

Just occurred to me that part of why Trump decided he wanted to incite chaos in LA is because he lives in an eternal early 1990s

Rounding up people at Home Depot looking for day work and small local restaurants means you're not raiding the factories, meat packing plants, and job sites of big Republican donors.

FUCKING THIS.

Less than 45 minutes after President Donald Trump thanked the National Guard "for a job well done!" Mayor Karen Bass clarified on social media "the National Guard has not been deployed in the City of Los Angeles."

I'm not sure Democratic elected officials should even be admonishing demonstrators. They don't have any real relationship to the party. They're not like heading to the DNC in 2028. They're not precinct captains. I suspect these admonishments just reenforce Republican frames.

there are powers that will do everything they can to convince you otherwise, but it should be said loudly that protest proves love. community is a conduit for love and oppression seeks to crush community. standing up to say no is an act of love

What’s going on in LA is important; for precisely that reason, please be careful what you share, both in terms of confirming that it’s true and considering whether it’s wise

There’s no reason that any Democrat should not be running on a platform of abolishing ICE. It should be one of the first question to asked of any candidate, running for a federal office representative, senator, or president.

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

Ugly look, not only for these individuals, but for our discipline & the extremely prominent societal institutions that are enabling this 😢

Funny how ICE who is so allegedly fighting undocumented gang members has only managed to round up normal working class people, traumatize children, and fight US citizens in the streets.

Military style ICE raids in our communities. David Huerta was beaten and dragged away. Because he saw them and stood up for justice. Because he’s not afraid. Neither are we. On MONDAY let's #FreeDavidHuerta, #FreeThemAll 11:00 AM @ Grand Park in Downtown LA (200 N Grand Ave)

This is the cycle: raid, escalate, criminalize the response, send in troops. ICE raids are not neutral, they’re psychological warfare on communities, and now they’re using military backup. This isn’t enforcement. It’s state-sponsored intimidation.

And there you have it. ICE didn't target migrant workers in Kristi Noem's farms or Sarah Huckabee Sanders' meatpacking plants because they wanted to create a riot in LA as a pretext to declaring martial law. They don't care about undocumented migrants, they only care about controlling US citizens.

All of these violent, lawless ICE officers terrorizing communities and hiding their faces weren't just hired this year. It's why dismantling ICE as an agency was so important and remains so. These people are unfit to be public servants if they hate the public.

there is merit — people demonstrating that they have the capacity to complete a given task — and “merit,” an ontological category reserved for some people and not others

"fit the general description of a subject being sought by ICE" They was brown.

Democrats should not (must not) take Musk's money, but I want to point out how chilling it is for the president of the United States to be promising "very serious consequences" to someone if they donate to the opposition party. www.nbcnews.com/politics/don...

My latest Looper piece is here, which saw me examining the 13 best actresses of all-time! Women, they're amazing, I tells ya! www.looper.com/1875115/best...

The fascist feds think they targeted one man, but they don’t really understand what they’ve done www.latimes.com/california/s...

I just can't stress enough how many of us warned that the creation of the Department of Homeland Security after 911 would lead to fascism. There is a very clear through line from the US's reaction to 911 to this moment.

not sure there's a more embarrassing profession than ICE agent. Oh, you dress like a soldier to abduct sous chefs and throw flashbangs at protesters? Get a real job you loser

i promise we can’t 4d chess ourselves out of this mess. think about where YOU have an influence and do what makes sense in YOUR context.

The most dangerous moment of any abusive relationship is the part where you’re preparing to leave. That’s when the violence escalates, that’s when the stakes get ramped up. That’s where we are with ICE.

the "there are only two genders" freaks are the exact same guys who wanna marry robots

The most striking thing about the LA protests is how many people just dropped everything to show up and yell at federal agents. There are people in suits, and carrying dogs, and wearing flip flops or bike helmets. These are not people who planned to do this today. But there they are.

Didn’t expect this from Scientific American but here we are. (Article from 2020 but everything still relevant including COVID precautions)

Let’s be clear: ICE injured and detained the president of SEIU California for peacefully observing. ICE picked the wrong side. The wrong state. The wrong person. and the wrong union. David Huerta stood up. And now 750,000 SEIU workers are standing up behind him. seiuca.org/press-releas...

DHS is breaking the law by blocking me and Reps. Rivas, Torres, and Correa from conducting oversight. That’s not a misunderstanding—it’s a violation of federal law. I’m demanding #SecNoem launch an immediate investigation. If her agency won’t follow the law, she needs to answer for it.

I'm sorry but if I happened to be googling HIV for, say, quite bleak personal reasons (thankfully not the case here), I wouldn't be THRILLED by this illustration right at the top of the page

Fantastic technology, glad society spent a trillion dollars on this instead of sidewalks.

Whenever I see "AI ethics concerns" it's always crap like "should Claude have a social security number?!" and not "should OpenAI all be in jail for marketing ChatGPT like it's your friend and designing it to prioritize continuous engagement above all else?"
