PRIDE originally comes from Kent & Mercia dialects of OE but only in the negative "haughty & overbearing" sense. By the 1500s, we'd turned that all around. Now PRIDE stood for "personal honor & good repute," an "exalted position," "splendor," and eventually "the prowess & spirit of a wild animal."

I don't think they know what works and what doesn't, but I think that many of them share the prejudices against trans people that make anti-trans messages appealing. This is a big problem bc their real issue is not being perceived as authentic, and their support for trans people is not authentic.
