In 1965, the mathematical physicist Roger Penrose proved that, given two simple assumptions, space-time must end at points called singularities. The paper has been called “the most important paper in general relativity” since Einstein’s. www.quantamagazine.org/singularitie...

After that meal I needed to get some more steps in so I wandered past the Antwerp opera house to stroll around the city park. Even after 10pm it was lively.

Just had one of the best meals ever at De Zeven Schaken in central Antwerp. Garlic butter prawns, stoofvlees (beef stew) and mash, and the smoothest richest chocolate mouse and cream. One classy experience!

Out with my students at the State Opera in Prague. We’re seeing Platée by Jean-Philippe Rameau.

New Orleans celebrated the return and burial of the remains of 19 African American people whose skulls had been sent to Germany for racist research practices in the 19th century.

This just reminds me of some of the atrocities humans have inflicted on other humans, how far it can go. What we are seeing now is the tip of that iceberg. The time to stop it is now.

Reading a maths book that talks throughout about functions etc 'eating' their arguments, but chickens out of the metaphor when it comes to their values

This Princeton prof's op ed is exactly backwards. Enrollment plateaued because the number of American 18-year olds was flat and now SHRINKING. It's not that international students are muscling aside US citizens, they are filling seats that would be empty and forestalling campus closures

“We are humans, and curiosity defines us… Awe and wonder are wired in our brains.”

My pals in Germany just had (now poorly aligned) door and lock repaired by the guy who installed them decades ago. I asked how much it cost. Nothing, they said. Lifetime warranty is standard it seems.

Am I binge drinker or a high intensity drinker? Neither, according to these NYT article metrics. I couldn’t conceive of drinking at those levels. Nor do I recall doing so when I was much younger. Phew. I’m a quality drinker. Life is too short to waste on crappy beers. And beer is all I drink.

Heading to Antwerp for 2 days. Recommendations? Giving a talk there on Monday afternoon on mathemagic w/ a deck of cards, with a special Belgian army doctor/dentist focus! platformwiskunde.be/category/in-...

Anyone see the irony here? (This beermat is old)

My first Asian meal out for 10 weeks! Mind you I’ve cooked Asian food for people in Ireland, Catalunya and Germany in recent times.

Stumbled on Antwerp’s Chinatown and tried this.

There was no mention of 'and'. I simply said 'Get baby potatoes'.

As seen in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Peter Carr was a great mathematician with an expertise in finance. I had the honor of being a colleague of his at Cornell before he moved to NYU, where he became a legendary teacher and a professor, much beloved.

The arrest of online fanfic erotica writers (99% young women) in China is still ongoing, some are getting sentenced to 10 years in prison I didn’t see any newer international coverage of this but I saw on Weibo today that more writers are getting sentenced right now amp.scmp.com/news/china/p...

I took yesterday off maths. I spent the morning doing useful nonwork stuff, the afternoon with a couple of old friends, and after dinner I packed. Now on my way to Florence, typing up a new paper, while summer shines through the train window.

"Like Conor Pass, the ambition is to expand the number of national parks and protect biodiversity" - Minister of State for Biodiversity, Christopher O'Sullivan. With all our EXISTING national parks severely overgrazed, rectifying *that* should be the priority. www.thejournal.ie/readme/biodi...

1st June is Dorset Day. Here is a detail from the Harry Clarke window at Sturminster Newton. Church open daily

And now I am being reminded that this picture was taken 37 years ago today (or maybe tomorrow), on my first ever trip to China. I am still in touch with my art teacher in the middle there, and with my classmate on the left (who became a contemporary artist, so obvs we were both paying attention)

I desperately need there to be a word for when a meal is the best you’ve ever tasted, not because of the actual food but because of the circumstances in which you are eating it.

Do the Germans have a word for that?

#CrochetAway I was just lamenting not having a knit WIP, and one reason is this rarer (for me) crochet #WIP. This is the halfway point of an end-of-bed throw that will be around 3.5 by 7 feet. Don’t ask how much the (on sale) Noro yarn cost. 😬 🧶 #crochetsky www.ofmarscrochet.com/products/fab...

Lisbon’s beautiful cathedral. It was built shortly after the city was captured from its Islamic rulers in 1147. Romanesque in style, it was very badly damaged in the earthquake of 1755, but has since been restored. #lisbon #lisboncathedral #portugal

Can you imagine them doing GCSE maths on the Radio 1 breakfast show? Amazingly in 2008 it happened. Every morning for one week Chris Moyles set a maths question for his co-presenters, and he made it engaging. Here's an example: dl3.chrismoyles.net/mw/funny-bit...

Don’t forget the Cultural Revolution in China.

There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

The legacy of Myles lives on. @frankie49.bsky.social Khalid the friendly hotel check-in lad here in Antwerp „gave me a hand with the packing.“ I think it’s shortbread. That really takes the biscuit.

The death of yet another breeding white-tailed eagle from suspected poisoning is just heart rending. But despite continued losses, this remains the most successful reintroduction project ever undertaken so far, and one of the best things ever done for nature, in Ireland. www.rte.ie/news/munster...
