Almost every protest in my life is described initially as a "peaceful protest" that "devolves" into unrest or vandalism or violence or whatever else. There's a quiet sit-in going on in front of the federal building. All local businesses are still open. But the headline's now "Waymos on fire"

Close to LA City Hall, there's a line of maybe 30 protesters huddled behind CalTrans signs as LAPD shoots pepper balls, smoke grenades, etc in their direction

An Australian reporter was also shot.

Wondering why they ran the Good Night and Good Luck play on CNN last night, that was about stuff from 70 years ago, what relevance could it possibly have today

Let’s be clear: ICE injured and detained the president of SEIU California for peacefully observing. ICE picked the wrong side. The wrong state. The wrong person. and the wrong union. David Huerta stood up. And now 750,000 SEIU workers are standing up behind him. seiuca.org/press-releas...

I was alarmed by this photo, wondering what on earth Elizabeth Warren did to her hair, then realized it is just reflections in the photo. We should hear her on this, as always.

Remember when Ronald Reagan literally had Alzheimer's during his 2nd term, his wife ran the country with astrology, the Republicans all covered it up and turned him into an icon naming airports and highways after him all over the country? Yeah, that actually happened.

Labour won a massive majority, then turned to austerity and immediately saw their poll ratings collapse, with the far-right Reform UK party now leading. The lesson to the center-left: never, ever embrace austerity. Ever.

Psst…those 1950s manufacturing jobs Trump loves so much? They were good jobs because they were UNION jobs. Oh...and taxes on corporations and the rich were much higher. Trump’s agenda won’t bring back the “Golden Age.” It’ll make the rich richer at everyone else's expense.

'The Trump White House and The Great Quieting' is a great read, especially the note at the end citing the work of the student journalists at the Daily Northwestern. Yes to speaking up and No to normalizing quiet desperation.

"...This order, like the others, seeks to chill legal representation the administration doesn’t like, thereby insulating the Executive Branch from the judicial check fundamental to the separation of powers. It thus violates the Constitution and the Court will enjoin its operation in full."

I know to buy Penzey's spices now. Thanks, @rabcarian.bsky.social , I needed this today.

"An ocean of crypto money helped Adam Schiff win a primary against Katie Porter, also helping take down Sen. Sherrod Brown in Ohio. Having bought Congress “over the counter like so many pounds of cheese,” crypto’s newest (senatorial) employees are doing as they’re told." Primary them? Yup.

A reminder that if the minimum wage had kept pace with worker productivity gains since the 1960s, it would now be nearly $26 an hour.

Damn, Leo might be in trouble if ICE demands his phone and scans his Twitter

Quick on the draw, literally, @anntelnaes.bsky.social!

As Trump guts the NSA and CyberCom, we have this going on

💪🏼

Blatant.

I feel the need to repeat that Slotkin got 23,847 fewer votes in Michigan than Kamala Harris did.

Our cover this week.

Check out how the anchors of CBS Evening News ended their broadcast tonight:

As the degredation of public services rolls on.

I feel like we need to keep saying this because it’s so insane: This is a legal U.S. resident who has been detained for over a month now for his political opinions.

Well apparently there is a red line, and Whiskey Pete crossed it, writes @ryanlcooper.com. When you hire a substitute Fox host to run the largest organization in the executive branch, you get the clown show you deserve. prospect.org/2025-04-21-p...

All the serious people in DC told us not to fight for wonky issues like “due process” bc normies will never care about anything beyond price of eggs and here we are …

Q: "How do you respond to Governor Newsom?" Sen. Van Hollen: "I think Americans are tired of elected officials or politicians who are all finger to the wind...Anybody who can't stand up for the Constitution and the right of due process doesn't deserve to lead."

Exactly this

Gavin Newsom calls Kilmer Abrego Garcia a “distraction” @washingtonpost.com What an absolute disgrace he has become. Beyond repulsive and shameful.

Solidarity exemplified.

Thank you, Greg Pearre. He's the senior executive who said no here, and got marched out of his office by Trump lackeys. This is where we are right now, declaring people dead to pressure them out over the objections of professional public staff.

i feel physical pain from how stupid this presidency is.

Elizabeth Warren (as usual) steps up. 🙏🏼🙌🏻

The Budget Resolution is a framework, yes, but it determines which sections of the budget will be cut and by how much. Medicaid and Medicare are the primary budget items in the committee the Budget Resolution says must cut $880 billion. Hands Off Our Medicaid

They are not invincible. Public presser/advocacy campaign works up. Don’t give into apathy. Never give in or give up.

One week ago, Susan Crawford won in Wisconsin—despite the biggest flood of attacks Musk and Trump could throw at her. Voters showed that they're going to fight back. That's only going to accelerate until the people doing all this to the country lose power. And then we rebuild.

Hello! We are a scrappy three-year-old civics blog based in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, NC. We just updated thegriffinlist.com, which contains detailed instructions for 65,000 NC voters whose votes might be thrown out in the state Supreme Court race. Please share!

Millions of people coming out over thousands of events isn't "cringe" and "privilege" just because the people who built the thing didn't hand you the mic afterward so you could talk about guillotines or whatever

I kept WaPo for the journalists there, to wit:
