So in all the noise and bluster, what’s the key takeaway from the sentencing review and gov’s reforms? There’s a lot to like in the proposals — but the gov risks shooting itself in the foot through key omissions to look ‘tough on crime’ 🧵 www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/sent...

I joined @jillongovt.bsky.social, @gilesyb.bsky.social and @kiranstacey.bsky.social on the podcast this week to unpack the gov's new Sentencing Review. What's in it, what isn't and why does it matter? Have a listen to find out! www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/podcast/insi...

Gauke's sentencing review report is finally out! Full assessment will come after gov announces its response, but some initial thoughts here. Overall: lot of sensible proposals, likely to be some big implementation challenges, and a few risks 🧵

Says something about me that I immediately assumed this was subtweeting the British government.

Uh oh - just looking through the detail of government's response to the sentencing review and noticed that they *are* proposing to completely end automatic release, *against* Gauke's recommendation (which is release after 33% of sentence for good behaviour and 50% point otherwise). Big risks here.

Absolutely cracking thread here from @cassiarowland.bsky.social that about the Gauke proposals for addressing the (non hyperbolic) prisons and sentencing crisis. Particularly of value in Wales, where we are inching slowly to separating the ‘England and Wales’ system to respective nations/Govts. 1/2

This is deeply alarming. Hard to overstate the sensitivity of the information that has been accessed - inc names, addresses, DOBs, offending history, financial info www.ft.com/content/d1c2...
