"Continuity" is a cage and most audiences don't really want trivia to keep track of they want character arcs and stories to feel like there is a sense of progression and character development. However, that progress is worthless if there is no ending, as Comics go on and on forever treading water.

Kids would read more American comics if they were encouraged to crumple, tear, throw them in backpacks and generally beat the hell out of them. Big advantage of manga and scholastic ogns is that they’re sturdy and no adult is telling you to delicately put them in a plastic sleeve in a cool dark box.
