Allison Munroe KC has made the Closing Submission for the Test, Trace & Isolate module on behalf of Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK. Thousands died because of the TT&I failure. We must learn lessons, implement changes and hold those responsible to account.

Shocking evidence of more VIP-Lane corruption at the Covid Inquiry. The Government asked the Horizon Scanning Group to fast-track 'VIP' referrals because of 'personal approaches being made'. The Government went where the money took them, regardless of public health.

Shameful indeed. The government didn't miss any opportunity to line pockets, whatever the cost to the nation, financial or personal. The amount of money wasted beggars belief, and the result was catastrophic for families like mine who lost a loved one to Covid.

A national scandal: millions given to Deloitte to set up and run covid testing service. They had to ask experts such as @deenan.bsky.social basic questions. Words fail.... This must not happen again. @cbffjuk.bsky.social @chrischirp.bsky.social

"They had no relevant expertise and were urgently seeking answers to some basic questions" The Inquiry heard evidence that the consultants being paid millions by the Government didn't have a basic understanding of how testing worked.

"Shameful" The Inquiry hears from expert virologist Prof. Deenan Pillay that the Government chose to spend billions on private consultants from Deloitte instead of listening to experts. The labs they set up have since been dismantled. 'We've been left with nothing'.

As the Covid Inquiry Test, Trace, and Isolate Module comes to a close today, here is a look at some of the shocking evidence we have heard so far. A Thread 🧵 1/12

1/3 Covid Inquiry Module 7 Day 12. Today is the last day of the Module 7 hearings. We will hear from 2 witnesses before moving on to Closing Submissions. Richard Machin (Expert on Financial Support and Adherence) Our application to question this expert has been refused.

1/2 Covid Inquiry Module 7 Day 11. 4 witnesses today: Prof. Jim McMenamin (Public Health Scotland) We have 5 mins to ask approved questions. Mary Morgan (NHS National Services Scotland) We have 10 mins to ask approved questions. Caroline Lamb (Health & Social Care Directorates Scottish Govt)

Where is Rishi Sunak? The @covidinquiryuk has repeatedly heard evidence that Rishi Sunak MP blocked financial support for people isolating. That decision cost lives, yet bereaved families have been denied the chance to hear from the Covid Chancellor.

The Covid Inquiry heard today that the government "slowed down" its Covid response in the summer of 2020, because they "wanted to believe that Covid was over." 8/10 Covid deaths have occurred after that slowdown We were told they followed the science. That was a lie.

At #covidinquiry today: Dido Harding claims test & trace provided value for money as resulted in less time in lockdowns 👇 Public Accounts Committee stated it 'failed on main objectives' & was 'muddled, overstated, eye-wateringly expensive'. @cbffjuk.bsky.social @hpiandycowper.bsky.social

Dido Harding has suggested to the Inquiry that spending £3 million per day on Test & Trace consultants represented value for money. Many consultants were paid more than £6k a day. The Public Accounts Committee found there was no evidence that Test & Trace cut Covid infections.

1/2 Covid Inquiry Module 7 Day 10. 3 witnesses giving evidence today: Baroness Dido Harding (UK Health Security Agency) Prof. Dame Jenny Harries (UK Health and Security Agency, NHS Test & Trace) Greg Fell (Association of Directors of Public Health)

Hard to hear for covid bereaved. We must learn the lessons for future pandemics: ensure systems in place to support people to isolate & protect others. This will save lives AND reduce economic & social impact. @cbffjuk.bsky.social

Today, the Inquiry heard how it took the Government until September 2020 to agree on additional financial support for people self-isolating. For 7 months, the Gov had forced many to choose between eating and isolating. By Sep 2020, only 20% of people were following guidance. A deadly delay.

Today, the Covid Inquiry heard evidence from Ben Dyson, on behalf of the Department of Health & Social Care. Many officials within DHSC were fully aware that many people would be unable to self-isolate on statutory sick pay alone. The Government knew and did nothing.

1/3 Covid Inquiry Module 7 Day 9. Four witnesses giving evidence today: Ben Dyson (Department of Health and Social Care) Dame June Raine (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulation Authority) Dr Robin Howe (Public Health Wales)

Last week I gave evidence to #covidinquiry on behalf of @cbffjuk.bsky.social & called on Chair to summon Pat McFadden MP to update on Govt progress on pandemic preparedness 👇 If you want us all to be better prepared for next pandemic, plse repost. @chrischirp.bsky.social @premnsikka.bsky.social

If a pandemic hit tomorrow, we’d be no more prepared than we were in March 2020. The Government's response to the Covid Inquiry has lacked urgency. We’ve asked the Chair to call Minister Pat McFadden MP to give evidence at the Inquiry so he can explain why.

5 years on from the first day of lockdown, the UK is in a worse position to cope with a pandemic than it was before Covid hit. We need to prepare public services properly to save lives in the future. covidfamiliesforjustice.org

"This is how government works" Asked about the Government's reliance on consultants during the pandemic, Lord Bethell gives a revealing answer. Delloitte secured contracts worth £298 million for its role in Trace & Test, with senior consultants earning up to £6,624 daily. 1/3

At the Covid Inquiry this morning, Matt Hancock dismissed evidence that the Government ignored warnings about asymptomatic cases in April 2020 as a case of 'bruised egos'. The Government didn't start routine asymptomatic testing until November 2020.

1/2 Covid Inquiry Module 7 Day 8. Today we will hear from 3 witnesses Matt Hancock (former Secretary of State for Health and Social Care). Our application to question him has been refused entirely. Lord James Bethell (Former Minister for Technology, Innovation and Life Science).

1/2 Covid Inquiry Module 7 Day 7. Today we will hear from 4 witnesses: Baroness Arlene Foster DBE (former First Minister of Northern Ireland) Michelle O’Neill MLA (former Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland) Prof. Sir Michael McBride (Department of Health NI)

Failure to support people with covid to isolate affected all: ▶️ people forced to go to work & spread infection ▶️ more deaths, like my mum's, and more #longcovid UK has one of lowest rates of sick pay in Europe Still not prepared for next pandemic @cbffjuk.bsky.social @thrivingplanet.bsky.social

"No rush" The Covid Inquiry hears that in May 2020, billionaire Chancellor Rishi Sunak felt there was "no rush" to increase Statutory Sick Pay because £95.85 a week was 'adequate' for people to self-isolate. That decision forced people to choose between isolating and eating.

1/2 Covid Inquiry Module 7 Day 6 and we will be hearing from 4 witnesses: Dan York-Smith (His Majesty’s Treasury) Jo-Anne Daniels (Welsh Government) Vaughan Gething MS (former Minister for Health and Social Services Wales) Mark Drakeford MS (former First Minister for Wales)

Data on #covid symptoms from millions of people ignored by Govt for months. 'Undoubtedly' led to more covid cases therefore deaths & long covid. Terrible to hear for bereaved families like mine & all those with long covid. @cbffjuk.bsky.social @longcovidjustice.org @thrivingplanet.bsky.social

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Important points here being: — other countries had changed their guidelines to include "loss of taste" weeks before UK — not adding "loss of taste" to the guidelines meant that it was not considered justification by health practitioners for testing #COVID19 #CovidInquiry #BorisWave #UK

Heartbreaking evidence at the Covid Inquiry this morning. The government delayed adding loss of smell & taste to list of symptoms because data 'came from an app'. Prof. Timothy Spector says this 'undoubtedly' led to preventable transmission. Criminal negligence in public office.

1/2 Covid Inquiry Module 7 Day 5. Today we will hear from Prof. Timothy Spector (Co-founder of the ZOE App, Professor of Genetic Epidemiology, King’s College London) Prof. Christopher Molloy (CEO of Medicines Discovery Catapult) Dominic Cook (Deloitte LLP)

"It no longer exists" The Covid Inquiry heard evidence this week that the testing infrastructure built up in 2020 has been completely dismantled. Prof. Alan McNally: "If Sars 3 happens in December, we will be exactly where we were in January 2020" An insult to those we lost.
