In 1964 the Civil Rights Act had 60/30 approval. 1964 was also the year the GOP nominated staunch conservative Barry Goldwater. One of BG's marquee positions was that he voted AGAINST the CRA. This earned him many votes from the traditionally Democratic South, but he got shellacked nationwide.
