Ash logs getting laid out for sale. These are the first of 1900m3 being worked from now into the next few weeks by very experienced contractors on a private estate. It was very hot work for the contractors, & I recognise their efforts involved in getting these already prepared for uplift.

Found Bambi yesterday just laying around in the woods.

I visited this colony when the parent birds were just back from over wintering, to see the chicks now would be lovely. Another trip to Suffolk needed very soon!

Finally made it to the Forest of Dean and it was a windy and damp arrival, but brought out a green lushness to the forest mosses and I'm sure the birds were singing more brightly for it too! Noted wild boar snuffling marks already and much understory in this mixed oak, even-aged part of the woods.

Just the crackling fire to keep us warm and the background roar from the weir where we swam earlier.

Enjoying simple riverside life this weekend. Some lovely old willows falling apart and lots of birdsong all around. The woodsmoke drifting and blending with coffee aromas into my senses. Occasional showers of rain coming through to keep everything feeling fresh. Canoeing later.

I'm delighted that there is a result in this court ruling favouring a person's right to wild camp without breaking the law on Dartmoor. I believe with the right and reasonable measures in place this ought to be possible in other areas. Leave no trace & respect the natural world & private property.

Just booked my first visit to Forest of Dean. Never been before. Anyone got any good wildlife spotting or big tree recommendations for me to check out? And I'll be looking for some dreamy gravel cycling too. please and thank you!

Wriggling things from yesterday: - Tadpoles and Ramshorn snails in a pond - A slow worm - Glow worm larva - Bagworm (micro moth) case

Some pictures of a wander in Rutland woodlands from yesterday

Important information for anyone dealing with or managing spruce trees. youtu.be/YG_x01T5FK8

It was lovely in the Welsh oak woods near Bridgend last week. Lots of natural regeneration seedlings under the mature canopy, but the sheep have got in and I'll need to get the fencing fixed as soon as possible!

Everyone is saying the same, it's too hot! But I was cooler in the woods today under the shade of the canopy and enjoyed a good delve. Also saw my first house martin of the year going into a nest under the eaves of an old thatched house.

A tall trees kinda day today in Cheshire

Went to listen for nightingales and heard my first cuckoo and grasshopper warbler of the year instead. At Fineshade Woods, Northamptonshire

Herb Paris in full flower now. This large patch in another ancient semi natural woodland in Rutland. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Look closely. It's not paint, but lichen! (From today's 'office' in Rutland)

A showy male Bittern from Minsmere, Suffolk yesterday (22nd April 2025), and after searching for a meal, unexpectedly paused to shake up and reveal its superb plumage...what an amazing bird! @rspb.bsky.social @suffolksnaps.bsky.social

After spending a day digging gravel in the rain, I was discussing Morocco with my father in law and made some khubz loaves as authentically as I could. They turned out yummy.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. I wanted to keep the front garden, but we need to park to charge the car. It was a lot of hard soil and sub-base gravel shifting, but progress was made until a skip arrives to take away the bits we're not keeping. We'll still have half a garden for No Mow May...

A peregrine found nesting on a pylon; roe deer on a new afforestation site being planned; exciting to think of future forest planting and landscape changes; and a look into Lincolnshire's lime woods in the past few days.

My first speckled wood of the year! In Suffolk on an N.N.R. part of the sandlings heath networks @savebutterflies.bsky.social And my first small tortoiseshell of the year, during yesterday, but I didn't get a picture of them!

Nightingales in Suffolk on the heath with a full moon rise. Tawny owls began calling soon after this, and bittern could be heard calling from @rspbminsmere.bsky.social Booming carrying well over 2mi from the reserve to where we were.

A healthy patch of Herb Paris in Rutland woods as I mark up for thinning operations later in the year in this ancient semi natural woodland.

The magical sight and sound of Sand Martins busily opening up fresh nest burrows at Minsmere, Suffolk... and in the background the songs of Nightingale, Chiffchaff and Skylark nearby (8th April 2025) @suffolkwildlife.bsky.social @rspbengland.bsky.social

It's important to have fun in the woods. Especially on a lovely sunny spring afternoon. A few minor injuries as rewards, and legs stung by nettles and pedal bites.

An interesting part of my day was to pass by Fauld Crater. Yes I did Keep Out!
