The BSL during Finland was sensational #Eurovision

As a German I will forever be grateful to all who fought for the liberation of Europe. But as a historian I am looking at front pages today and must wonder: What is the point of remembering #VEDay 80 years on, what is the point of our thanks, when we are failing to protect the sacrifices made? 🧵

He’s got away with untold crimes, lies & offences. He’s achieved the highest office in the land. Twice. He’s lining his pockets on an industrial scale & persecuting his enemies for fun. But he’s still a miserable, bitter, humourless & furious man. Because deep inside, he knows *exactly* who he is.

A little while ago, my parents' cat Bridget went missing. As the weeks dragged on, they became extremely worried. My dad devised a way to distract himself: he began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time and popping up in some of art and music's most iconic scenes.

It’s 9am TFT time here, and citizens are already gathering to protest Tariffs by the United States. Our plain clothes Officer Penguins are attempting to maintain calm, but unfortunately we keep losing them in the crowd.

Day 11 of the #Turkey protests. Tens of thousands of people in #İstanbul gather for the Freedom Rally organised by the opposition.

We took over the giant screen at Farage’s big rally in Birmingham

One for the real west country heads www.davidlay.co.uk/auction/lot/...

‘Okay which one of you accidentally added Robert Cecil to the chat?’

BREAKING: People are being suspended on X in Turkey for posting videos of these protests against Erdoğan’s corrupt and repressive regime. Keep sharing everywhere.

One of the really special things about Sesame Street was always these little art films that were less about teaching a specific thing than they were about instilling a sort of meditative sense of wonder at how the world works.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. Cycling ending on ITV4 and going behind a £30.99 Discovery+ paywall is a travesty.

Is this another one? Keep it up London!!

"Why couldn't he have worn a suit"..... #StandWithUkraine

He who didn’t flee, who stand by & for his country. He is everything the weak, pathetic men hate, because Zelenskyy is respected & admired by a whole world due to his selfless, strong leadership. He gets everything a dictator wants, by being everything a dictator can never be! #ArmUkraineNow

He is not just appeasing Putin, he is aligned with him. And every single client journalist, political shill & public/online cheerleader on both sides of the Atlantic is too. Against Zelensky. Against Ukraine. Against freedom. Against the most basic tenets of decency.

Obama and Biden may think they are honoring the office of the presidency by keeping quiet at a moment like this — if so that’s just preening vanity — they owe it to the office and to the Republic that until last month it served to speak up loudly and clearly and without relent.

Word of the day is ‘huff-snuff’ (16th century): a hectoring bully or braggart.

Quite amazing for the American VP to be giving lessons on liberty to Europeans while his boss bans the Associated Press from news briefings because it calls the Gulf of Mexico by its actual name.

Trump is not Hitler. He is a different kind of fascist. But, just as in 1930s' Germany, a large swathe of people are under his spell, completely blind to what he is and the disaster he will bring to their lives - and to all of us - unless people in America, and everywhere else, stand up against him.

In all the UK media discussion of Trump, Musk, RFK Jr and all the rest, nobody says what IS. They are a bunch of idiots. Dangerous idiots. But idiots all the same. In the words of Michael Faraday: “They are ignorant of their ignorance.”

For Putin, getting Trump as President is like getting the green light to invade as many Ukraines as he likes. I hope the countries of Europe realise this and that their collective response is as deadly serious as the threat.

George Monbiot on Ukraine/Putin: “It’s as if he’d come to the UK, he’d occupied Kent, Surrey, Sussex & then somebody else like Donald Trump comes along & says fine guys just live with that. These people who go on about sovereignty will sell anyone down the river” #bbcqt

Trump says he will begin negotiations with Putin to end the war in Ukraine. Any "deal" will be scripted by Moscow: Russia keeps territory it has stolen, no Nato membership for Kyiv, US military assistance ends. In short, a recipe for betrayal and further war www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

The betrayal at Yalta could be swallowed because there was no feasible way of preventing Stalin from swallowing Eastern Europe. A ‘peace’ settlement imposed on Ukraine would be as shameful as it will be unsurprising.

Two autocrats, looking to carve up a sovereign country as only an autocrat knows how. Truly horrible stuff. #SlavaUkraini 🇺🇦

Word of the Day is ‘bayard’ (16th century): one who has the supreme self-confidence of ignorance.

Lukashenko has clung to power for 30 years. Tomorrow, he’ll reappoint himself in yet another sham election. This is a blatant affront to democracy. Lukashenko doesn’t have any legitimacy.

You might expect that one of the world's biggest media organisations admitting to illegal practices in accessing private information about a member of the royal family and a government minister would be front page news across the board, but apparently not.

What we are witnessing is the normalisation of extremism. If we allow the right to pretend that the German AFD is just another conservative party... or that Donald Trump is just another president... or that Elon Musk was just getting carried away with that salute are on a distinctly dangerous path.

Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"

Wish I could say that the people normalising Trump this morning will regret it, but they won't. It's like being in Groundhog Day. They already normalised him, then acted shocked when he tried to overthrow US democracy, and now, with the memory of a fucking goldfish, they're doing it all over again.

This is a good description of the GOP: The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest, best financed, most applauded and, on the whole, least successful exercises in moral philosophy. That is the search for a truly superior moral justification for selfishness. ~ John Kenneth Galbraith

A nice quirky story but also one that illustrates just how much the extremely wealthy could do for the public sphere if they had any real interest in it.

Kemi Badenoch defends the right to speak freely and air a different point of view, by insisting those who disagree must stop.

It turns out that Farage was right; foreigners were coming for his job.

"I'd tell him [Putin] to go f*ck himself. I lived through that war, I know how hungry I was then. And now I'm hungry too! Russians are afraid of everything. Russians are afraid to speak." - a Russian grandma says. Unfortunately, not a lot of Russians think like her.

An explanation, for tonight

Don’t recall there being much outrage when Conservative Downing Sts in every administration of last 14 yrs doled out honours to scores of backbench MPs basically for just being MPs. We should have far fewer political honours but the thrice elected Mayor of London is a weird place to start.

I continue to be deeply moved by this statement to the heavens by President Carter.

"The bond of our common humanity is stronger than the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices. God gives us the capacity for choice. We can choose to alleviate suffering. We can choose to work together for peace. We can make these changes and we must." -- Jimmy Carter, 2002, Nobel speech R.I.P

There has to be life on one of these dots.

To be added to the list of things Liz Truss is wrong about:
