Which FDA-approved vaccines had randomized, placebo-controlled trials? ALL OF THEM. Polio? Measles, mumps, rubella? Haemophilus influenzae B? Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis? Meningococcus? Varicella? Pneumococcus? Rotavirus? RSV? Hepatitis B? Influenza? HPV? COVID-19? Shingles? YEP. A thread🧵 1/

I was searching for chemicals today and got some prices. Realised that “deliver to” was set to US. Changed to UK and the prices all massively dropped. Tariffs in action…

1804. Oceans are now Battlefields. In the South China Sea a British convoy worth almost £1bn today is spotted by the French. It should be a massacre. Instead, Commodore Nathanial Dance is about to defeat a French battle squadron using some paint and the most overplayed hand in #navalHistory. /1 🧵

Excited to see this out in @science.org today!! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

The tragedy of public policy. You can change things to save millions of lives and nobody will notice, still less thank you for it (see also, seatbelts, food regulations, vaccines etc)

Staple this to RFK Jr’s forehead.

Great thread on the topic of dimethyl sulfide/smelly aliens. I also prefer to be solid #chemsky

Bannon the latest in the “Britain doesn’t manufacture anything” brigade. It’s a lazy trope you hear repeated in the media a lot. In fact the UK remains the 8th or 9th biggest manufacturer in the world. 10% of our GDP with some of the most advanced manufacturing anywhere.

A must read for any medicinal chemist or anyone working with molecules in vivo

U.K. academia plus U.K. biotech plus U.K./Sweden pharma = new medicine. A great advert for our drug discovery ecosystem!

NEWS: NICE has recommended capivasertib for advanced #BreastCancer. The decision makes the targeted drug available, in combination with fulvestrant, for some NHS patients with the most common type of breast cancer. Read more about the history of the drug⬇️ www.icr.ac.uk/about-us/icr...

Someone must be making money out of all these sudden market moves

Impt paper from @npca-natcan.bsky.social-geographic variation in prostate cancer diagnosis bmjoncology.bmj.com/content/4/1/... Areas with the HIGHEST risk of metastatic disease have the LOWEST incidence of all prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is curable if caught early @prostatecanceruk.bsky.social

Groundbreaking study in Cell from @leventallab.bsky.social: phospholipid asymmetry is a defining feature of the plasma membrane and cholesterol fills the holes — major implications for how this membrane works. A #lipidtime must-read! www.cell.com/cell/abstrac...

I was going to get the train today. But I am increasingly concerned at the deficit I’m running with Great Northern Rail. I buy a lot from them and they purchase nothing from me. Tempted to apply a 20% tariff. Sure my tickets will cost 20% more but it might mean I buy fewer and reduce the deficit.

What a great visualisation

Diversity initiatives in science have led to stronger teams and better outputs. We need more, not less diversity in our workplaces.

My friend from graduate school found out that funding for her NF1 project got pulled. From $25 mil to 0 with a stroke of a pen. NF1=Neurofibromatosis Type 1, an inherited genetic disorder. Both of us are early career scientists. 🧪🔬🧬 #Science #AcademicSky www.wired.com/story/the-ch...

Nice to be back at @ucl.ac.uk again yesterday to give a medchem teaching / revision seminar, and some good audience participation (well, relatively good for a Monday morning at 9am, that is!)
