Happy Easter everyone!

Mardini 2025 is over! 31 days of Houdini. My 1st & I'm sure not my last. It was tough but a great learning experience. Thanks @greyscalegorilla.bsky.social for the awesome 3d assets & @sidefx.bsky.social for hosting! Until next time!

Week 4: VFX - DOPS Day 28: MUD Our favorite capybara enjoying a relaxing mud bath. I was in a rush to make the deadline for the Iron Heart award so kept the mud settings at the default 'chunky' mud preset. #Mardini2025 #Houdini #3DCG

Week 4: VFX - DOPS Day 26: MELT I had fun building this out especially the waffle cone. This one's all Houdini. Rendered in Karma. One more to go for that Iron Heart award! #Mardini2025 #Houdini #3DCG

Week 4: VFX - DOPS Day 23: COLLAPSE Taking my day 3 Architecture entry to have it partially collapse. Getting some weird floating RBD pieces as well as what looks like walking sticks πŸ˜‚ No time to troubleshoot. Textures and stone block are GSG. Rendered in Karma.

Week 5: RENDER - LOPS Day 29: SUNSET Ah the dreaded tiling ocean. I'll need to figure out a way to break that up. For now this will have to do. Background HDRI, bench model, and textures are GSG. Rendered in Karma. #Mardini2025 #Houdini #3DCG

Week 3: MOTION - KineFX Day 19: CRAWL The Capybara is taken from the SideFX content library and posed using KineFX. Lighter model and textures are GSG. Rendered in Karma. #Mardini2025 #Houdini #3DCG

Week 2: TEXTURE - COPS Day 10: METAL Revolver and cyc model are GSG. Background texture and base metal materials are also GSG. These were blended with various masks created using a mixture of COPS and the Labs texture baker. #Mardini2025 #Houdini #3DCG

Week 2: TEXTURE - COPS Day 9: WOOD I'm using the built in shader ball to check my wood material. I wish I knew it was there sooner! COPS is fun so long as it doesn't cause Houdini to crash. Cyc model, grid texture, and HDRI are GSG. #Mardini2025 #Houdini #3DCG

Week 2: TEXTURE - COPS Day 8: STONE Tiled stone material. I'm using three different GSG materials and combining them using COPS to create the various tiles. #Mardini2025 #Houdini #3DCG

Week 5: RENDER - LOPS Day 31: UNDERWATER Using pyro for some underwater bubbles. GSG hdri used for lighting & background. Added black blocker & visible area light to affect the reflections/refractions of the material to punch it up a bit. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

Week 5: RENDER - LOPS Day 30: MOONLIGHT I had fun with this one. Wish I could work more on it. Not sure why my DOF is not affecting ocean. Bug? HDRI, textures, lamp posts, boat, and bench are GSG. Everything else Houdini. Rendered in Karma XPU. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

Week 4: VFX - DOPS Day 27: SNOW The idea was to add animated snow fall but never got there. On a positive note I had the chance to experiment with instanced lights in Karma. Other than the background trees and HDRI, all Houdini. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

Week 4: VFX - DOPS Day 25: FLOOD Wanted something quick this time so I'm using my environment from SOPS week. Rushed but better than nothing. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

Week 4: VFX - DOPS Day 24: CRASH Revisiting my SOPS Day 4 FOLIAGE entry to use as the basis for my CRASH scene. There are a few strange floating pieces from the RBD sim. No time to troubleshoot. Also, no time for pyro on this one. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

Week 3: VFX - DOPS Day 22: EXPLODE Experimenting for the first time with RBDs and pyro inside Houdini. Fun but this took a while to cache and render so kept it short. All Houdini. Rendered in Karma. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

Week 3: MOTION - KineFX Day 21: Fly I'm still trying to wrap my head around the KineFX system. Clouds in background and textures are taken from GSG. Everything else is Houdini. Rendered in Solaris. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

Week 2: TEXTURE - COPS Day 14: Graffiti Final day of COPS. More crashes but still lots of fun. Made it just in time with a simple screen grab πŸ˜… I'd love to push this further. COPS has so much potential. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

Final day in COPS for Houdini. Theme is GRAFFITI. I have no idea where to go with that πŸ˜… There' still time to join. If you're new to Houdini or want to learn those areas that you have yet to explore, now's a good time.

Week 2: TEXTURE - COPS Day 13: Scales Coiled snake. The joy of learning COPS. I just wish it was a lot less crash prone. All Houdini other than the ground textures which are GSG. Rendered using Karma XPU. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

Week 2: TEXTURE - COPS Day 12: Grunge More fun with COPS. Grungy water tower. Model is GSG as well as the textures used for the layered base materials. Lots of masking and blending using COPS. Rendered using Karma XPU. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

Week 2: TEXTURE - COPS Day 11: Fabric Kept it simple. Fabric on ottoman created in COPS (so powerful! Similar to Substance Designer but inside Houdini). Furniture model, wall, and floor textures are GSG. As usual, rendered in Karma. #Mardini2025 #Houdini

The Mardini SideFX challenge has a requirement to use nothing but Houdini for entries. GSG is allowed however. Very clever in that it forces one to push through and learn parts of the software that they probably wouldn’t have touched otherwise. It’s tough but having fun!

Week 1: Model - SOPS Day 6: Character It's Feathers McGraw! All box modeled in Houdini. I was hoping to giving him a proper texture pass but couldn't figure out how to export masks to disk from Houdini. I miss Substance Painter. #Mardini2025 #Houdini
