Front page of today's Guardian "reveals" the extent to which Peter Kyle's ministerial diary includes meetings with big tech. If you want a good eg of why UK trade press is important & underrated,it's this @annamckie.bsky.social article...from April. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-p...

Hey look! It's @resprofnews.bsky.social's first @theguardian.com front page A little unfortunate their exclusive analysis of Peter Kyle's meetings came a month after our story

Dsit has now confirmed setting “stretching and measurable new organisational objectives” for UKRI which will “set clear expectations around organisational effectiveness and building a pro-innovation culture” It said the objectives will be part of a summer refresh of UKRI’s 2018 framework document

There's been a lot of talk about tariffs this year. Is the UK government the only one that is looking to effectively impose one on one of its own biggest exports?

Govt's international student levy plan, modelled at 6%, a "tax" that could "siphon off hundreds of millions" from universities and hit research, UUK's Vivienne Stern tells @resprofnews.bsky.social. "Taking money out of the system is not the answer." www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-u...

More things for HE in immigration white paper: Gov to strengthen requirements that universities must meet to recruit international students. Will be ranked 🟢🟠or🔴for compliance on things like completion & must sign Agent Quality Framework. Read: www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-p...

Two stories on the immigration white paper, hot off the press. More to follow too. First, the government is planning a levy on universities’ overseas fee income & will slash the amount of time graduates can remain in the UK on the grad route visa. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-p...

Breaking: Government plans levy on universities’ overseas fee income. Immigration white paper also proposes cut in duration of graduate visas to 18 months. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-p...

There's been a relatively hopeful trend for uni finances in number of student visa applications - steady 5-month improvement after last year's crash Big qu today is what the immigration white paper will do to this trend www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-u...

Confirmation in the immigration white paper of tougher graduate route visa rules for those wishing to stay in the UK after study, and a new levy on international student fees mooted. Suspect vice-chancellors & other will be livid. Coupled with Jacqui Smith attack in Telegraph, a tough day or two.

Universities repeatedly over-estimate their forthcoming financial performance. It is totally understandable. Imagine if Dundee had told everyone it was set to run out of money by June this year before it felt it had to come clean? I do wonder how any other institutions are hiding similar skeletons.

A grim stat - 79% of unis may cut research over next 3 years That's more than twice the figure recorded last year. The number having actually made cuts in last year is up by a third No wonder Research England is worried unis may not use all their QR funds @chrisjparr.bsky.social reports

From yesterday's 8am Playbook. A very close one, but @mgmcquillan.bsky.social just about called it.

WooHoo! Great news. Well done all.🥳

Strong words from @viviennestern.bsky.social “For God’s sake, index link [tuition fees], because if you just let them drive into the sand, then…it’s all going to end in disaster” Plus quite a slap down of the idea that a graduate levy could fix university finances Via @chrisjparr.bsky.social

University cooperation stymied by push for competition, says efficiency taskforce chair Nigel Carrington. System has “roadblocks” to cost savings, & “significant” but achievable changes to the regulatory/legislative environment required, he says. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-u...

Patrick Vallance (Dsit, science) and Jacqui Smith (DfE, universities/skills) have met formally just *four* times since taking up their respective ministerial roles last year. Very interesting story from @francesjones.bsky.social. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-p...

Student complaints hit another record high. As in previous years, international students continued to be over-represented in complaints processes. More than one in three of the complaints received by the OIA came from non-EU students (34 per cent). www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-u...

"We do not hold information about the internal cost of the investigation" - incredible admission from the Office for Students after @chrisjparr.bsky.social FOIed the cost of its free speech case at @sussex.ac.uk It also refused to release the external costs, out of step with other public bodies
