Happy anniversary of the Villa Diodati summer, where the Shelleys, Lord Byron, Claire Clairmont and Polidori gathered in a house on the shores of Lake Geneva and told ghost stories. Celebrate by taking laudanum and hallucinating horrors, or by watching one of the films inspired by the events:

Glorious looking manuscript! The fishes!

#calligraphy and #fountainpen stuff. One time looking for Pilot Parallels on Ebay I found these "Chinese Parallel Fountain Pens" that use roughly the same nib architecture but have different sizes. (I made a chart somewhere.) Pilot stops at 7mm so I got a 9mm and 11mm. 1/

In the 1970s there was a Christian Nationalist org in Oregon called the Posse Comitatus whose members impersonated police officers. They menaced judges and other public officials who they thought had committed "treason" against the Constitution. A close associate became chair of the OR GOP in 1978.

My sign for No Kings in Brattleboro today. I parked about 2 miles north of the staging area and walked in. Told we had a turnout of 2500-3000. They also called out a local bad-faith citizen journalist and told folks to treat him like a ghost, which he *deserves.*

Another bit of Noem news that slid under some radars is her asking Hegseth last week to deploy surveillance drones over LA and have federal troops conduct arrests. Even if the news did get around, there was little emphasis in the press on just how unlawful it was.

I live in Vermont. Just called their offices as well.

Thousands of people marching through Lower Manhattan now demanding ICE get out of New York City.

Really enjoyed working on this great project! The Kew Record Book is now freely available online. It's a unique document in the history of botany and horticulture, recording incoming and out going plants at Kew Gardens 1793-1809. blog.biodiversitylibrary.org/2023/05/trav...

Sean just took a fucking headshot and is en route to the emergency room. Thousands of you have shared his work today. Pay the man:

Conversation with Paul Krugman about “Inventing the Renaissance” paulkrugman.substack.com/p/inventing-...

Was privileged to know Linda a little bit. She called me out of the blue one Saturday night a few months ago and I cannot overstate how matter-of-fact and brave she was about what she was going through.

this is a day for those of us who have spent the last six months terminally online. this is for us and honestly, we deserve it.

Anyone thinking about Chapter 7 of Machiavelli's The Prince, where Cesare Borgia installed that guy Ramiro da Lorqua in the Romagna to take charge and bring order, then had him cut in half in the public square because da Lorqua had been too harsh? Just me?

Today has been full of chaos energy and flashbacks. I have been cleaning. Then keeping young cranky people apart. Then I checked out my feed here. I'm just gonna savor the schadenfruede.

My kid was looking at Dragons Love Tacos 2 on his tablet and I blurted out "Battle Pope 2!" from @adapalmer.bsky.social 's Inventing The Renaissance. And now I want a series of Battle Pope books in that style, like Battle Popes Love Wars with Pope Sixtus IV listening intently to his cursed ring.

Me: "Ah, good. Watch says I have been walking 30 minutes. I can swing on back home." Niamos (S2 Club Mix): "Nope! NI-A-MOS!!" Me: (Keeps walking)
