wait why are Mexican flags bad but Israeli flags good? they're both flags of sovereign nations!

The definition of intelligence and cognition is a matter of taste. —Sheldrake, Entangled Life

LAPD when they think nobody is watching

This should be a huge deal, and also it's time to ring in a recession to bring down the government.

My local coffee shop is not playing around.

Anybody who thinks that Bluesky is a bubble where people just reinforce each others’ opinions should try sharing an opinion on Bluesky.

Six infants in Ontario have been born with congenital measles since last fall. They were infected in the womb through mothers who were not vaccinated. This is heartbreaking, preventable and a result of the spread of anti-vax disinformation.

Yup. I have a hard time seeing the fact that Bluesky does not compensate people for being combative assholes to generate "engagement" as a downside.

looks like an objective assessment to me

Should never have called it the National Guard. Should’ve called it state guards

ICE crossed a line in LA

Two babies have died from whooping cough in Kentucky. Neither they nor their parents had been vaccinated. The current whooping cough outbreak in the U.S. hasn’t grabbed the media spotlight as much as measles has, but it’s important to update your vaccination if you’re going to be around babies.

I've literally had AI boosters tell me "AI is not biased, you're just bad at prompting" because they don't actually understand how bias works or how an LLM is productized outside of a chatbot. The scariest thing about this tech isn't when you talk to it. It's when you don't see it at all.

Time to reread Ira Levin’s This Perfect Day…

Welcome to the Soviet Union

NEW: Unbelievable. A seemingly endless line of tanks & other military vehicles arrive in DC ahead of next week's parade. They departed Texas 5 days ago. What a colossal waste of time, money & military resources. All for a President who has shown zero respect for service personnel. (🎥 DW)

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

There's a pretty explicit test case of a center left party abandoning trans people and immigrants. Labour in the UK have done just that and their political support has imploded while legitimizing the fascist Reform party. Dem consultants seem content to follow this strategy.

You know which young people still know how to read maps? The ones who read fantasy books. Those have maps galore in them.

Who wrote this utterly perfect piece? Calling from the sycamore At my back door The owl counts four. Mother, father, me, And one more.

With the New York Times continuing its attack on trans people, I wrote about its failures and how Azeen Ghorayshi has led the charge to weaponize their coverage against the trans community and launder anti-trans talking points into the mainstream. www.thedissident.news/the-new-york...

it’s almost like courage in the face of fascism is rewarded by voters or something

My little house hides the spring. Its windows fasten the light of day. —Li Wuingzhao (1084-1151)

I see this fallacy almost every day, in tech and politics: 1. There is a problem 2. We believe that our solution will fix the problem 3. We built the solution 4. Therefore the problem is now fixed Bitch, no. You have to check. Let's talk about leading and trailing indicators.

"We were trying to find her to get her to a hospital" claims Texas cop who used a nationwide license plate database to track down a person who had allegedly self-managed an abortion. I don't even know where to start

1. All eagle deaths, esp in a small population, are a loss but some are harder to take than most. Sadly, our 1st breeding male, released in 2008, was recently picked up dead. This bird deserves a proper obituary to put his life (and death) in context www.thejournal.ie/investigatio...

Finished Wills’ “Nixon Agonistes.” As everyone says, a masterwork, about so much more than Nixon himself. Probably the most penetrating book I’ve ever read on the deep structures and implicit intellectual foundations of US politics/culture, and shockingly relevant for something published in 1970.

We were so close to eradicating HIV in our lifetimes. I will never get over the cruelty & hate.

Seems late, but whatever stops it now

Nature ran a piece finding that 25 million people could die as a result of ending USAID. This puts Trump and Musk in the category of the most brutal leaders of the 20th century in terms of unnecessary lives lost. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

"all i wanted to do was pose with a chainsaw, fire thousands of people, redirect government money to my companies, starve kids overseas, make government services harder to access, and then brag about it. why are people being so mean about that"

It is hard to stop pining for the dark handsome man who left at what he called “the end.” Why is it hard?

This is crass cost-cutting wrapped in junk science as justification. Removing these recommendations means Medicaid will no longer automatically cover Covid vaccines for kids and pregnant people, who make up about half of all Medicaid recipients. It's "saving" money by forcing the vulnerable to pay.
