A Gen Xer on a project to listen to all 500 albums on Rolling Stones 2023 list, rate them, and then re-rank them with others that I think should have been included. The things we do to get through a second Trump administration with sanity partially intact.

--FIONA APPLE:EXTRAORDINARY MACHINE (2005) This is okay, at times with some, I don't know, Berlin in the Weimar Republic vibes. I think this is essentially an average album. 5 out of 10

--YES: CLOSE TO THE EDGE ( 1972) If Incels were a thing in 1972, this is the album they would have put out. One cannot describe the abomination that is their cover of Simon and Garfunkel's America-- you really must here it. 1 out of 10 youtu.be/eGWzMSLXFj4?...

--ALICE COLTRANE:JOURNEY IN SATCHIDINADA (1970) Maybe two interested songs, but most of this sounds like a weird collection of instruments warming up. 3 out of 10

--BAD BUNNY: X 100PRE (2018) "Universal acclaim," "crossing across genres". Yeah, I've got to go with the whole world is crazy except me. This sounds like the same, simplistic, boring, shit, over and over and over and over. I was going to say too long, but looked at the run

--OTIS REDDING:DICTIONARY OF SOUL (1976) It doesn't get much better than Otis Redding--except if it's live. But a great document of studio soul. 9 out of 10

--WHITE STRIPES: ELEPHANT (2003) The problem is that Seven Nation Army is a much better song than the next 10 songs, then a couple good songs close this out. 5 out of 10

--PAUL AND LINDA MCCARTNEY: RAM (1971) Too many notes, but some good songs and some misses, and good God Admiral Halsey is fruity. 5 out of 10

--ROBERTA FLACK: FIRST TAKE (1969) Two great jazzy tracks, but sandwiched in between these tracks and also finishing the album is some boring, slow schlock. 4 out of 10

--DIANA ROSS: THE ANTHOLOGY I question the inclusion of Greatest Hits, but multi volume anthologies are cheating (even if I dug the Muddy Waters collection). But, it's the Supremes. I'd replace this with the Ultimate Collection, and give it a 10 out of 10, but this anthology? 7 out of 10

--NINE INCH NAILS: THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL (1994) "A little ridiculous, but some legitimately good songs, with significant stylistic variations, considering its ""industrial" label. 7 out of 10

BREAKING: Sly Stone, leader of funk revolutionaries Sly and the Family Stone, dies at 82.

--CAN: EGE BAMYASI (1972) My introduction to Kraut Rock. Weird, very weird, but not awful. I may go back, but not immediately. 6 out of 10

--BO DIDDLEY: BO DIDDLEY/GO BO DIDDLEY Rolling Stone put on a package of his first two albums. I find Greatest Hits a little problematic, but just combining two is doubly problematic, especially when the first one is much better. 6 out of 10

These Brown shirts have the Fascist playbook and they are following it step by step

--AL GREEN: GREATEST HITS Great soul. Do Greatest hits count as an album? Especially an artist like Green who has great actual albums? I'm not quite comfortable with it counting, on the other hand if I am judging albums on how listenable they are in one sitting, which I am,

--SINEAD O'CONNOR: I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN'T GOT(1990). What a great run of songs in the middle of this album, Three Babies, The Emperor's New Clothes, Black Boys on Mopeds, Nothing Compares 2 U. Starts and ends a little slow. 7 out of 10

--JASON ISBELL: SOUTHEASTERN (2013) People whose opinion I know and respect love this guy. It just seemed an inoffensive if depressing country album. 4 out of 10

--KID CUDI:MAN ON THE MOON, THE END OF THE DAY (2009) This shows that a hip hop album can have songs that sound distinct and be original, and catchy all at once. But, he could have cut 3 or 4 songs. 6 out of 10

--LORDE:MELODRAMA (2017) Woo boy, I don't like this, I see why this is a big deal for Gen Zers I guess, and at least some of these songs at least sound distinct from each other but otherwise, not for me. 3 out of 10

--BON IVER: FOR EMMA FOREVER AGO (2007) An indescribably boring album. Like listening to the demo tapes of a shitty indy band. I'll give it a two because at least it was a decent length (37 minutes) but man that felt long. 2 out of 10

--FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS: THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN (1969) Great country-fried rock. An almost perfect side A. Sin City, Dark End of the Street are just incredible. It bogs down a bit on the B side, but still a masterpiece. 8 of 10

--LAURA NYRO: ELI AND THE THIRTEENTH CONFESSION (1968) Not getting this at all. Can't put my finger on what it reminds me of, but found it a bit of a snooze. 3 out of 6
