Highlights from the CHANGE: HOW? event on 31 May

🔴The ‘Millionaire Exodus’ the UK Media Told You About Never Actually Happened The equivalent of 30 stories a day were published about an exodus of wealthy people that a new study finds was “non existent” bylinetimes.com/2025/06/10/t...

As today's conference comes to a close, we want to know: What was a moment, idea, policy, that you came across today that you'll definitely be thinking about tomorrow? #RadicalRenewal

Six big warnings about the rise of Farage: Claire Jones writes for Left Foot Forward

📊 “First Past the Post simply isn't designed to cope with a multi-party system - at least not if you believe in fairness”, says @mariecgoldman.bsky.social 🗳️ We “need to look at how elections are conducted”, agrees @lucympowell.bsky.social, Leader of the @houseofcommons.parliament.uk

Some useful reflections on the local elections this month from @ollyglover.bsky.social Some voting reform would help too #MakeVotesMatter @compassox.bsky.social @libdems4er.bsky.social @libdemsoxon.bsky.social

"To fight a Trumpesque future we should abandon the useless straight jacket of ‘Left vs Right’ and replace it with the more powerful, crystal-clear moral axis of right vs wrong." By Claire Jones for West England Bylines

"What we are calling for is a modest, first step towards addressing what everyone can see is an indefensibly broken voting system. We believe the government needs to set up a National Commission for Electoral Reform" ✍️ @alexsobel.co.uk & @lizzicollinge.bsky.social

Does First Past the Post still work with multi-party politics? “I don't think it does”, says @timbale.bsky.social “It's very, very difficult to predict what's going to happen... I'm not sure that's very good for the stability of the country and particularly for stability of the economy.”

“If it's a national judgment, why should geography matter?” - asks Professor John Curtice Fascinating discussion about the challenges defenders of Britain's electoral system now face on today's @ukandeu.bsky.social webinar

Regardless of party it is hard to think it is optimal to see mayors who are supposed to be champions for their area elected on a quarter of the vote. Govt would be wise for purposes of legitimacy to switch the system back from FPTP to a supplementary vote.

We're seeing it again: FPTP makes a mockery of democracy. 🚨Turning elections into a lottery 🚨Giving 100% of the power to parties with 25% of the vote 🚨Making us vote for the "lesser evil" 🚨Silencing millions of voices Sign the petition to scrap it:

The effects of fragmentation and Farage on the #LocalElections2025 is hard to overstate. 1 fifth won with a majority, down from 65%. Almost a 6 fold increase in councils won on 30-40% of the vote - and a whole new bracket of winning vote share emerging below 30%. 👇From @luketryl.bsky.social

An enormous transformation from 2021 on Devon County Council! 🤯 Progressives on the council, formerly under Conservative control, now have the opportunity to model bold, alliance-based leadership for the good of local communities.

🤝 On Gloucestershire Council, another authority under NOC, progressive politicians can now join forces for a Good Society. Against the backdrop of big wins for the populist right across England, there are huge opportunities for a new kind of politics.

Neil Lawson's statement on the results today: www.compassonline.org.uk/compass-frag...

🧭 Progressives must step up and offer hope for the future of our democracy. That was the message at @compassox.bsky.social's conference on Saturday, where participants heard from Neal Lawson, Dr Isobelle Clarke, Calum Miller MP, Tom Brake and Mark Thomas, and planned local action together.

Compass Oxon had their 'Democracy and Disinformation' meeting at The Sanctuary in central Oxford last Saturday. We had a terrific panel of speakers talking on a wide range of democracy-related topics including UK grassroots far right activity (Neal Lawson), social media disinformation...

What's behind the Rise of the UK's Far Right? youtu.be/4mgDiRIP2_U?...

In the #SpringStatement today, the Chancellor could have set out the pro-equality, tax-reforming strategy required to make good on the government’s promise of change. An enormous opportunity has just been squandered - and the right are the ones who will benefit.

👍 Labour MPs are leading the push for fair votes 🥀 Labour must not be defenders of the broken status quo. We need a National Commission for Electoral Reform 🌹 The Government must put country first, party second - everyone deserves a fair vote

“The injustice of our electoral system is that parties have a huge majority of seats on a minority of the vote.” APPG Vice Chair @elliechowns.bsky.social on the need for Proportional Representation

All UK parties (except Conservatives, marginally) have voter bases that prefer proportional representation over first-past-the-post.

More and more MPs are speaking out against our broken voting system. The Prime Minister can't ignore this any longer. We're urging him to kickstart the process of replacing our broken voting system. Sign the petition. secure.unlockdemocracy.org.uk/page/165296/...
