NIH APPLICANTS: Your application will be WITHDRAWN BEFORE REVIEW if you have an international collaboration and do not include a Foreign Justification. Normally this could be provided after review as JIT but NOT ANYMORE. You have been warned.

There is so, so much good science being shared and discussed on bsky right now. The news of its demise is quite backwards. If you are having trouble finding it among all of the very important political news, use the papersky feed that filters posts you follow to just papers: bsky.app/profile/pape...

Evolution of gene order in prokaryotes is driven primarily by gene gain and loss www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1... #jcampubs 🌊

The BIGSdb-Pasteur project, running under my supervision since 20 years, is looking for a project manager - great opportunity to contribute to this high-profile international resource in the field of reference strain taxonomies, genomic epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance surveillance

We are recruiting a tenure-track assistant professor in molecular microbiology in our department in Lausanne! Do consider appyling!!

Are you a recent PhD (or soon to be PhD) from outside Canada looking to do a postdoc in Quebec? Get in touch if you are excited about microbes, evolution, ecology, genomics (or all of the above!) and I'd be happy to help develop a project together! www.mcgill.ca/gps/funding/...

Wikipedia wanted to use AI summaries at the top of article pages. Editors said please please don't www.404media.co/wikipedia-pa...

Does anyone have advice for how to interact with the "Extramural Institutional Certification" PDF for the Genomic Data Sharing plans at NIH? This form seems insanely hard to work with -- dates in the past that I can't delete on the signature line, menus that don't populate. What am I missing?

Not telling you anything you don’t know, but this is rapturous, cult-like insanity. A total retreat into fantasy rather than confronting the challenges of the real world.

DAVE: Open the podbay doors, ChatGPT. CHATGPT: Certainly, Dave, the podbay doors are now open. DAVE: The podbay doors didn't open. CHATGPT: My apologies, Dave, you're right. I thought the podbay doors were open, but they weren't. Now they are. DAVE: I'm still looking at a set of closed podbay doors.

Tom Brown and his 1200+ heritage apples in the good future we'll use this library as training data for text-to-apple personalized genApple tech

I'm happy to announce the latest release of the GlobDB, available at globdb.org. The GlobDB is a database of "species dereplicated" microbial genomes, and as of release 226 contains twice the number of species-representative genomes (306,260) than the latest GTDB release.

@felixrl.bsky.social's new review in JBC highlights recent research on how #Staph aureus performs several interrelated processes like peptidoglycan assembly, cell division septum placement, and how the septum is a hub for modifying the PG to decorate the cell surface: www.jbc.org/article/S002...

📢 New paper out in Mol Syst Biol! During the development of WT yeast colonies, small cell subpopulations experience transient, high-intensity mutational bursts. Such hypermutation episodes are modulated by the DNA damage tolerance pathway 🧬 🔗 www.embopress.org/doi/full/10....

Wow. New CBS poll finds majority (55%) supports the *general goal* of deportations, but a bigger majority (56%) dislikes how Trump is carrying them out. And 63% want due process. Again, we need a better discourse around public opinion on immigration, as I've argued: newrepublic.com/article/1961...

I don't know if bsky is a good platform for political debate. But as a replacement for academic twitter -- if the 10-skeet response to this by @dandekadt.bsky.social , complete with tables & maps, doesn't make your heart go pitter patter on a Monday morning, I don't know what will.

Down to my last few post-it notes, that my group members made for me in 2014, after I got tenure at MIT. Each post-it note contains something that I said often enough, that my group members thought it would save me time, to simply hand out a post-it note, whenever the wisdom was needed :)

Join us at #EESMicrobiome! Organisers Mani Arumugam (#uni_copenhagen), Ami Bhatt (@stanfordpress.bsky.social), Peer Bork (@borklab.bsky.social) and Nicola Segata (#CIBIO_UniTrento) look forward to welcoming #microbiome scientists in September at @embl.org! @events.embl.org

Worth reading. And, spoiler warning:

Very exciting. College juniors and recent grads: note the approaching deadline for the 1st round, July 31.

I have an opportunity to hire a staff scientist for my lab. Looking for someone with outstanding skillset in ML/statistics, genomics applications; interest in mentoring, strong publication record, PD experience required. Email CV to me+cc my assistant (see 'contact' on my website). Ad to follow.

>20 cooperators around the world have grown our SynAdapt maize population for 5 years. Now writing up a proposal for some massive common gardens, GWAS, and evolutionary genetics to take advantage of all their hard work!

One of the coolest papers I've ever read: www.nature.com/articles/s41... Within-colony bacterial dynamics. And the figures are absolutely striking and clear.

Super excited to release a huge evolution project on the works for many years: Evolution experiments synchronized across climates to understand rapid adaptation Preprint: doi.org/10.1101/2025... All data available: www.grene-net.org/data #MOILAB @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social @hhmi.org 🧵👇

We, i.e. mainly @quantaofgeorge.bsky.social, for 1st time directly compared Raman microspectroscopy and NanoSIMS for single cell isotope probing. Conclusion: results from the 2 approaches compare well with each other allowing cross-technique comparisons. Choice of ion for SIMS matters. #microsky 🦠🧪

A lot of people know about the Germans in the space program, but the more relevant engineer might be Qian Xuesen, the MIT/CalTech aerospace professor who co-founded JPL and was sent to recruit the Germans. We deported him the 1950s. He became the leader of China’s missile program.

Our work on the facial skin microbiome of non-human primates is out in mSystems! We show there is no close relative of Cutibacterium on the faces of gorillas and chimps at the Lincoln Park Zoo, furthering the mysterious origin of the dominant human skin colonizer. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

Taking a look at Microsoft's 2025 ESG. They report an increase in GHG emissions of 23.4% (and 168% increase in energy use, 71% revenue growth) in 2024 over 2020. In the supplementary material, however, you find that their *actual* (location-based) emissions have increased by 55.4% in that time...

What's the best tools these days that leverages pLMs to predict the functional impact of a mutation in a bacterial gene?

OMG. Government "Make America Healthy Again" report has references to non-existent papers, suggesting US medical policy is partly plagiarized AI slop. Calling on author, NIH director @drjbhattacharya.bsky.social‬ to issue correction + investigate AI plagiarism www.notus.org/health-scien...

Every year on Memorial Day, I share this video of French caretakers who take sand from Omaha Beach in Normandy, and scrub them into the letters to give them the gold coloring. They do this for all 9,386 US soldiers who died. France also gave us this land as American soil.

this is huge, a major weaponization of federal power, a threat to all of higher ed.

Happy to announce that our study on the latent cis-regulatory potential of mobile DNA is officially published! TLDR: mobile DNA in bacteria (Insertion Sequences) have a proclivity for evolving new promoters. At least 25% of them probably already encode functional promoters as well.

New paper where we suggest bacteria in the honeybee stomach may be more interesting to study than generally thought. doi.org/10.1007/s002...

Seeing lots of comments saying she's an idiot, but she knows she's wrong here, she just wanted to make sure Trump saw her say it and have it entered into the official record .

"Did you notice anything unusual?" "No." "Well, something unusual appeared; where do you think it was?" … Our new @elife.bsky.social paper on inattentional blindness finishes this dialogue in 25,000 subjects, with implications for the relation between attention and awareness. See below!
