I can't blame users here because general users are consistently bad about both privacy and UI. I do blame Meta for building a feature into its AI product that sends conversations to users' timelines. That is an incredibly stupid feature and this outcome was inevitable. Meta fucked up monumentally.

This is an incredible crew of folks fighting to enshrine crucial protections in their union contract. That contract will be looked to by many other unions and companies as they navigate this world that is so deeply hostile to the journalism and the truth. Give them your support!

this year for my birthday I got the best gift: explaining the dark romantasy trend to a friend who is NOT online.

Media literacy so bad now days Jerry Lewis’s The Day the Clown Cried”, which was once likened to a painting of Auschwitz on black velvet, would be hailed as a masterpiece.

turns out when you elect a bunch of businessman with an intense love of isolationism and zero understanding of liberal internationalism this is what happens

i’ve been flipping between these three books this week and it’s a pretty perfect way to explore American culture

historically you might have said “the US is in an AI arms race and if we lose we’re fucked as a nation”. but you’ve repeatedly prioritized your own profit over that arms race. why should people support an industry that seems to funnel wealth upward and ignores social harms?

If you are not watching Mobland you are missing Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan play the most toxic couple on TV right now. They’re beautiful in their awfulness.

If a steak is so thick it has to be finished in the oven than babe you’re not eating a steak you’re eating a roast.

just to be super super super clear as a tech editor who regularly reports on and rebuilds gadgets: if Apple engineers are obsessing over “Chinese women with little fingers” it is because they have significant racial biases that haven’t been questioned.

it’s almost like when you fill the government with entertainers and influencers who have zero knowledge of governance you get shitty TV instead of a government.

this happens because reviews journalism is access journalism. of course a company will restrict access if they don’t like you! You think a Tim Cook interview happens out of kindness? why should Nvidia give you access when there’s a friendlier journalist waiting in the wings?

A fond farewell to Polygon, from the people who worked there aftermath.site/polygon-vox-...

the creatures were care for have so much to teach us if we’re willing to pay attention. for example my dog taught me today that despite my confidence I cannot hit the high notes in Wicked.

recounting a kdrama about the restaurant industry to my brother in the actual industry really highlights the beautifully enormous stakes k-dramas conjure.

My absurd theory that is in no way supported by fact is a big part of this branding is to make himself seem cool so you will think his smart glasses are cool and will want to buy them when he starts selling them.

As a kid I didn’t get how purposely over the top True Lies was and just thought it was a good movie and that’s about the level of media literacy I see from a lot of people lately.

my dad was once a cop and my mom worked as an attorney and later judge for the state of texas and the crucial thing they taught me young was “say nothing and give them nothing.” just an ID, not your whole wallet. just “yes ma’am, no ma’am” not a defense. be polite but be QUIET.

This is a really good idea but I wonder how affected it is by gaming journalism’s continued struggle with gamergate assholes. feels like the minute you do these demos, etc, there’s a small cadre of jack weeds directing weaponized hatred at many involved?

I don’t think it’s a mistake that the first American Pope comes not long after the first Millennial Saint and in a time, particularly in the US, where powerful stewards of society, like tech companies and the government, are gleefully, recklessly and callously taking advantage of people.

This is not a shocking insight given his portrayal in Sarah Wynn Williams’s Careless People. He just a profoundly profoundly sheltered individual who is incapable of seeing a big picture unless someone repeatedly explains how it personally benefits him in a way he approves of.
