Say what you will about the tenets of the Cold War Liberal order, dude, at least it was an educated ethos.

If you’re a listener to the bonus episodes of “If Books Could Kill,” listen to this podcast next. If not, just listen to this podcast. They debunk a recent (last year) article about the lab leak hypothesis. It is fascinating. Lab leak is SO MUCH WEAKER than proponents would have you believe!

As I've said before, what we're dealing with fundamentally here, and have been dealing with for some time, is evil. Our political norms and political media prohibit talking about a mainstream political faction this way. But it is the truth. It needs to be known and it needs to be said.

Once again, it's not "doxxing" to report the name of a government employee.

Did you just think you were on a mutual's feed and then slowly realized you were on the Discover page and they are not in fact "that esoteric?" Hi, I'm Clayton and I'd like to notify you you've been scrolling for too long.

somehow just now learning that these are the names of the last two mission impossible movies

The dumbest I've ever felt is when a child asked why buses seem bigger on the inside than the outside, because the outside is about the same width as a car (they use the same streets, after all) but inside they have space for four seats and an aisle and I actually wasn't sure how it works

The Kenyan author championed local African languages and was imprisoned for his work. His name was often mentioned in discussions about the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Like a moth to a flame. Only the moth is my career passion and the flame is everything with no discernible future and a razor-thin chance of success.

More immigration courthouse arrests today by feds some in masks, as people are leaving court hearings, at least seven detentions that I've seen in last few hours. Congressman Dan Goldman stops in briefly asking "why are you wearing masks?"

"It’s hard to overstate how central the management of the U.S. dollar is to the management of global decarbonization," warns @advaitarun.bsky.social in his latest for Heatmap. More on why global climate policy still needs America to act:

Medicaid is the primary payer for maternity care in the U.S. It finances about 4 in 10 (41%) births nationally — nearly half in rural communities (47%). Our new brief covers more facts you may find surprising.

As I’ve said before, in order to build a mass deportation operation to root out 4% of the population you must first build a police state.

There is so much... but this snapshot especially sobering as that (fired) advisory committee was such a terrific group of experts--as are the state dept. historians.

begging, positively on my knees, sniveling, pleading for a return to the idea that the purpose of a company is to employ people to make goods and/or offer services.

Apparently the Trump administration is demanding the coal power plant by my childhood home remain open despite its closure being eminent (May 31). Per a family member who attended a county meeting: the administration fired off this demand without consulting the company or the state/local officials

I was 36 when I realized that's Wayne Newton singing Danke Shoen and not some starlet of the era. I am currently 36...this happened 15 minutes ago via Spotify...and I've heard that song easily 35 times in my life.

I know it's been 26 years but did Le Tigre ever figure out who took the bomp?

Update: Bass signed the Olympic and Paralympic Wage into law, now officially AN ACT OF GOD

🔁 this post given that u received 3 spam emails for companies that wanted me to be a historian....to shore up AI responses. For $16/hr....Masters required, PhD preferred.

Lightning crashes, an old toilet dies.

That's not fair - they also want to keep a market open for Trump's Saudi paymasters to sell oil to after the rest of the planet electrifies.

This channeling of power through the unitary executive seems to function like bureaucratic authoritarianism with a frontman. No one will pay mind to the functionaries destroying institutions because the clown takes up the limelight.

Reminder that odometer fraud is a federal felony and a state felony in all 50 states.

After 20 years, the infinite monkeys finally wrote Hamlet but set it in a Florida Walmart and Ophelia was a crack addict.

Pinker in an NYT oped was allowed to imply that historians deny the reality of African involvement in the slave trade. I love how he gets to lie about my profession and so many brilliant scholars.

Anyone collating a book of his gaffs? Will be a bestseller!

Shifting the tax burden from the wealthiest 1% to the middle class has been a long-term GOP objective.

we have so many problems that are really one problem whose only answer is “impeach, remove, imprison everyone involved in this administration.” i’ll be angry for the rest of my life that they had 4 years to rid us of this and fucked it up

Detective: Can you describe the man who shot you? Me: He seemed mad

All right-wing discussions of IQ, genius, & even autism are designed to make you believe “intelligence” is not just access to education, asymmetric information, & leisure time.

To some extent there's little one can do for a given generation. But I think fostering these qualities in young men means instilling it at a young age e.g. more male grade school teachers. This means attracting them to the profession which is the most difficult part imo.

I'm genuinely sorry that Fetterman had a stroke and suffers from depression. But arguing that he has a free pass not to do his job in the name of destigmatizing brain injury and mental health struggles is offensive. If he can't do it, he should resign. If he doesn't want to, he should resign faster.
