"For me, the answer now lies in refusal, the withdrawal of participation from systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging." Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council. I wrote about my decision in TIME. time.com/7285045/resi...

Thinking of all of the amazing federal scientist moms who have left recently.

if you teach, you are engaged in an inherently political--but not necessarily partisan--act the political vs partisan distinction stays kicking people's ass this old @asociologist.bsky.social is very helpful on this scatter.wordpress.com/2020/11/10/p...

NOAA just announced a long list of datasets that are going away🧪⚒️🌊: www.nesdis.noaa.gov/about/docume... Download what you need asap and send comments to: [email protected]

This should be the template for every university’s website: let the public know what they gain from research and what they stand to lose. www.harvard.edu

I have been an international student, or around international students, for all my adult life. Every single one of these visa revocations is a human tragedy, a dream quashed and a life derailed.

UPDATED: At least 83 students -- at campuses for University of California, California State University and Stanford -- have had their visas revoked as of Monday evening.

it's a hard and sad time in science / higher ed in the US right now. on the other hand, lots of PhDs are looking for work, so I wanted to share— I'm hiring a postdoc! it's a two-year position at UCSC to do (preferably Bayesian) modeling of marine ecosystems: recruit.ucsc.edu/JPF01892

Spectacular view of 100,000 people attending the #HandsOff march in NYC

We just learned that Washington State Library’s $3.9M annual award from the Feds has been cancelled. That’s rural libraries, rural librarians and internet access, databases for research and ebooks through Libby. DOGE needs to end.

Collecting my thoughts at the end of one of the worst days of my life... At NIH, > 1300 people were RIFed. These range all across the board from institute directors to low level administrative staff. Communication staff and procurement appear to be hardest hit as anticipated from the HHS plan 1/n

About a hundred protestors outside of the Tesla dealership in Seattle today. The store and surrounding street closed.

Tonight an unbelievable **34,000 people** gathered for our Denver rally to take on billionaires and win our country back. This was the largest political gathering in Denver since Obama in 2008. Also bigger than the 2024 DNC. And the largest ever rally in Bernie’s career (and obviously, mine too).

Congestion pricing is an unqualified triumph. One of the most immediately, strikingly successful public policies of my lifetime.

NWS just announced a major reduction in upper-air (weather balloon) observations due to staffing shortages. Omaha and Rapid City losing balloon launches altogether, with launches cut in half at 6 other sites. Losing this many launches could affect severe weather forecasting and computer models.

This is terrible news & just one part of a bigger picture. Prepare yourself for ongoing updates about the “reduction in force” this month and more again in April. Talk to your community about it. They may not believe it at first - it sounds unbelievable! But we must bear witness & explain.

Tuberculosis, the deadliest infectious disease on the planet, kills more than 1.25M people a year. New infections are expected to surge by 30% as a result of closing USAID, a memo says. The increase will inevitably lead to cases in the U.S.

Crowds are massive in Silver Spring, Maryland…the home of NOAA. People chanting, “Save NOAA Now!” and “We will not weather the storm.” Make your voices heard and keep it up. #NOAA #NWS Severe Weather is on its Way. And so is hurricane season. 🌀 🧪

First, they said postponed; now the meeting is canceled. That means no flu shots next year. “'It’s a six-month production cycle,' Dr. Offit said. 'So one can only assume that we’re not picking flu strains this year.'" Fundamentally, that's a form of mass murder. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/u...

18F, a digital services unit inside the General Services Administration, has been completely laid off, according to an email I’ve seen. The email says that 18F was deemed “non-critical” and the decision was made with the “explicit” direction of the administration and GSA leadership.

"In 2023, Miller was awarded NOAA Fisheries employee of the year...and in March 2024, she was promoted. On Thursday afternoon, while on vacation in Hawaii, the federal biologist opened her work email on her personal phone to find she no longer had a job." www.kuow.org/stories/noaa...

Please enjoy my last ever post at Climate.gov/ENSO Blog. This afternoon I was fired by the Trump Administration 15 days before my 2yr probationary period ended on March 13. I have worked at NOAA since 2010, and I'm so incredibly proud of the work I did. If anyone wants a quote, let me know.

BREAKING: The mass firing of upwards of 1,800 workers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, including top climate scientists and weather forecasters, has begun. The firings reportedly include workers at the National Weather Service.

Gregg is a former Marine and Forest Service ranger. He's saved the lives of hikers dangling off a cliff or going through cardiac arrest, and he's bravely fought forest fires to save small rural towns. 100% of his salary is paid by WA state. Elon fired him. Share his story.

New: DOGE's spending has been secret. No longer. My colleagues have uncovered it. www.propublica.org/article/doge...

I’m going to continue to work until my computer access is revoked,” Lennox said. “Then I’m going to volunteer. I’m going to keep working as best I can to support the veterans. That’s what I’m here for.” taskandpurpose.com/news/veteran...

not trying to pick on this guy. this just reminded me that the federal government does not provide coffee to workers. to drink coffee at a federal office you generally have to pay into a "coffee club" that is managed by a staffer who volunteers to collect money and purchase a monthly coffee supply.

Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania has indirect rate of 70%, but they probably didn’t want to list that atop Harvard because defunding a children’s hospital might be perceived as problematic. This is devastating

The new cover of TIME.

Sometimes self-government just means elections. And sometimes it means recognizing the deeper dignity and meaning of what it means to be a people. That means speaking up, standing out, and protesting. We can only be free together. snyder.substack.com/p/the-logic-...

It's actually theft of taxpayers money when websites go dark. We paid for that data

the number of calls needed to make the point that a given vote will cost them is lower than we think, a powerful argument in favor of focusing our energies. you take issue A. I take B. someone else takes C. we make our weekly rounds. no one has to deal with the whole firehose at once

Trump has signed an executive order eliminating all funding for diversity and inclusion in the federal government, sending home DEI staff who will then be laid off. The historical echo for this is when Woodrow Wilson resegregated the federal government in 1913. We have reached the second nadir.

The single greatest attack on the Constitution in my lifetime. Utterly and completely lawless. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

“I see a difference, definitely,” said Tony, who has spent 18 years as a bus operator for the MTA. “There have been no delays the entire week, and when I look to my left and right down the avenues I can see all the way down – I’ve never seen it like that.” nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/01/10/m...

Inspired by @mcsiple.bsky.social to use Goodreads and to post my 2024 reading list! I am not usually a memoir girl but this year "Horror Stories" by Liz Phair and "I'm Glad My Mom Died" by Jeannette McCurdy were faves. Also, Kelly Link's novel (I have loved her short stories for a long while!)
