Oh what a waste. A small but perfectly formed contra flow cycle lane. Aiming to get people in Sheffield safely and legally to their destination.

When you can let your five-year-old child play on the street that becomes genuinely safe street You cannot safely share any space with heavy machinery So safe cycle route is a cycle route that does not have motor vehicles on it We need a car free network

Bike parking is bike infrastructure. Bike parking can also be green infrastructure. Bastiaansplein, Delft.

Sometimes #CarryShitOlympics just happens to you... Was at a friend's place for a clothing swap (brought 2 Ikea bags of clothes!!) & her neighbour was selling a countertop dishwasher! So of course I biked home with a dishwasher. 🤣

Today’s packed post for #TheOutdoorCity #Sheffield - open.substack.com/pub/abitblac...

When a train crashes, there's a process to learn lessons so it doesn't happen again. Cars crash every day and the official response is 🤷 www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

If your cycle infrastructure isn't safe enough for everyone, of any age, to feel they can use it, then your cycle infrastructure isn't safe enough.

“When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle & go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking.” -Arthur Conan Doyle #BicycleBirthday May 22 (1859-1930)

"It's been a fantastic victory to see wild camping rights on Dartmoor confirmed... but we want to see those rights extended" ICYMI here's my interview with Channel 4 News yesterday evening from outside Alexander Darwall's estate at Cornwood, Dartmoor: www.channel4.com/news/supreme...

Some #walking / #cycling / #wheeling updates for #Sheffield #TheOutdoorCity in this week’s Sunday at Bill’s Mother’s - open.substack.com/pub/abitblac...

Cycling keeps me young in mind & body & “young at heart” especially when a lot of it is done with inspirational older riders like Eric here today who’s 87 in August & still rides 100 road miles every week Such a pleasure & an honour to share my hobby with people like Eric 🚴😁

Protected cycle tracks are needed alongside rural main roads, with the cycle tracks continuing at roundabouts with cycle priority, so teenagers can safely cycle home with their fishing rod in their hand after a day out fishing with friends

Road safety requires changes to street design. Not the equivalent of a wet floor sign saying "please don't run over my child".

Flags and bubbles featured heavily on yesterday's #KidicalMass, spreading the message and spreading smiles.

Today I got the train up to Sheffield to marshal Kidical Mass Sheffield! What a turnout! Hundreds of families enjoying cycling. Hoping to get high numbers at our Kidical Mass Nottingham ride on 1st June! It leaves at 11am from Victoria Embankment Children's Cycle Park. #kidicalmass

The Cycle Sheffield & @sheffkidmass.bsky.social mass ride in #Sheffield today. Woop Woop 🚴

Cycle infrastructure designed for 8-80 year olds (although these two are 7 and three quarters - very important that 3/4 is!) Lovely ride to Cannon Hill Park and back this morning, made possible by @a38cycleway.bsky.social Not in view: the 12yo who rode there and back solo, also enabled by the infra.

The idea that one can be safe cycling amongst heavy machinery operated by fallible humans is farcical What we need is a network of car free roads so that we can travel in safety It’s an ecological imperative

Train and bike – the perfect match! We cycled the Danube Bike Trail from our hillside village down to the plains. Now we’re returning aboard the Mühlkreisbahn, one of Austria’s most scenic railway routes.

Manchester Critical Mass takes to the new Deansgate cycle lanes

I've been on about this for a while; I even did a book about it. It's about the power of a network. And funding, of course - it always needs funding: open.substack.com/pub/lauralak...

Underlining the need for a nationwide car free network

This question is essentially pointless unless people are also polled on *how* they would like it to work. Would it apply to under 18s? If so would teenagers have to carry ID to show exemption? Would cyclists have to carry proof of license? The whole idea is bonkers, which is why no one does it.

The answer is #Motonormativity

Well that’s something you don’t see in #Liverpool everyday (unfortunately); a #cargotrike. I genuinely hope I see the day when it and other #cargobikes are just something you just see on the streets and not a rarity.

When the Dutch invest in cycling infrastructure, they invest in something that is both functional and beautiful. This contributes to cycling not so much being a functional activity, to get from a to b, but also a recreational and social activity.

Why don’t cyclists use the bike lane that the council spent £3m on? Is it because council operated vehicles are parked in the “bike lane”, on the pavement and on the zigzag endangering pedestrians trying to use the crossing. #30daysofbiking

Today I used this cargo bike to carry 0.3 tonnes of water for local trees, do a full family supermarket shop, haul 3 kids around mini-golf, morris dancing and football, AND transport a whole load of party leaflets. Plus I saw loads of people I knew and got a suntan. 💕🚴‍♀️

I know this is well-meaning but it sums up everything wrong with road safety. Someone risk-assessed this and decided a warning sign pushing responsibility to the vulnerable road user was the answer. What about ‘CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC BEWARE OF CYCLISTS’? (Or better still, safety by design)

A roundabout in Nijmegen, with priority for people cycling and walking at all arms of it

The COVID-19 pandemic offered new insights around the impact of the built environment on mental health, with the prevalence of the car in our cities and lives severely limiting our ability to create restorative spaces. Here are three takeaways for planners wanting to promote better mental health...🧵

I call my friends in the Green Party to take Jenny Jones to task for this. What she is calling for *will* get cyclists killed, and set back active travel by decades.

More random things between Utrecht and Gouda. A floating petrol station (one for the SEJ lads), floating traffic calming to avoid a hump, a rural signalised crossroads and crossing a turbo roundabout which is very much discouraged as a design.

Does anyone actually use these bike racks or are they just for looking pretty? I can’t imagine lifting my ebike up there!
