We are still fighting the Civil War, it seems, just not with armies. In her June 18, 2025, “Letter from an American,” Dr. Heather Cox Richardson explains the history of Juneteenth, how the celebration of Juneteenth has shifted over the years, and -> 1/6 @hcrichardson.bsky.social

I think SF managed a flash mob type of response, like this, at an unmarked ICE facility, on the day after the No Kings marches. www.cbsnews.com/amp/sanfranc...

Lander and Padilla have set the standard that absolutely every Democratic politician should meet or exceed if they don't want to get primaried.

If your country’s police starts looking like this you are extraordinarily fucked. The only appropriate response is a civil uprising. #AbolishICE

There are no distractions. It's all bad. Systematically stripping trans people of their rights, guys in balaclavas shoving any brown person with a tattoo into a ummarked vans, ending healthcare for millions. It's all in service of fascism and technofeudalism. It's all one thing. That's the point.

If you were to sum up the entirety of my late life (re) education about SCOTUS in one post, this would be it.

This is a somewhat minor if especially funny example, but @404media.co is one of the US' most essential news outlets because they consistently do stuff like this the bigger news sources either don't think of doing or don't bother to do.

People like when you unapologetically stand for something, specifically the working class. This shouldn't be seen as some super lefty position, and we shouldn't need a poll to tell us it either.

Getting a good sense of what to expect at this weekend's 50th annual Letterheads conference, in Cincinnati!

🤔

Is the LA mayor using the sort of alternate facts techniques we've come to expect of the Mump Regime as a reality diffusion field, ironically or otherwise, or were people out for a midday march and rally *not really* stranded by mass transit service that unexpectedly evaporated?

Philly’s No Kings rally was exactly what I expected. I’m glad lots of people showed up to protest fascism, but reckon it would’ve been nice for the organizers to have had an actual demand/action for all those newly activated people to take, instead of just taking a big slow walk and going home.

this statement was made just yesterday

With the tragic assassination of a Minnesota Democratic leader, I’m going to underline this point again.

In light of (a) all the week's talk of the Posse Comitatus Act w/r/t the Clown-King summoning troops to LA, and (b) this morning's reports of a Minnesota guy dressed as a cop, going on a shooting spree for Dem congresspeople in their homes, here's an interesting tale from Oregon's fascist history.

I think Republicans really need to understand that if people are denied relief through the legal system, they will find other ways to seek justice, and historically those ways end up being quite violent

ZOMG, that's what I *thought* I heard!

New figures from CBO about how Americans at different income levels are affected by the GOP's Big Beautiful Bill. Topline finding: Richest decile gets about 2% richer. Poorest decile gets about 4% poorer. www.cbo.gov/publication/...

Corporate Media 1773: Colonialists messed-up today by tossing East India Company’s tea into Boston Harbor, this will provoke the King to send more troops & increase taxes on colonies, and most colonists will welcome & love the troops while blaming their radical neighbors for provoking the new tax.

Big day for Bluesky's key age demographic!!

This is a major far-right figure saying we should just get rid of Mexican-Americans. The White House and DHS listens to these kinds of people.

This was the thrust of HCR's Letter, last night, too: open.substack.com/pub/heatherc...

Might Oregon's hard-fought success vs corporate degradation of health care be a bellwether for similar nationwide efforts? If only there were a cabinet sec'y who could help... I'm sad to hear WTF is ending. I feel "seen" in this article, as one of those people who started skipping past the monologues after a while, because his interviews ARE the best. But, yeah, gems are found throughout... There Will Never Be Another ‘WTF With Marc Maron’ - defector.com/there-will-n...

an immaculate metaphor for the futile and disastrous events of the last 30 years

Just want to express once again my contempt for all the mainstream and libertarian platforms that promoted this loathsome discount Goebbels. Shame on you.

They were always going to come for obergfell and everyone else except white men with property.

I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving. There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later. They. Are. Breaking. The. Law.

Why are we celebrating traitors that fired upon US soldiers in a bid to keep people enslaved?

King Trump has now sent to a few street corners in Los Angeles more than half the number of Guardsmen he sent to _the entire Southern border_. He has gone insane and is desperate to invoke martial law. And Noem has made clear the Marines in LA are indeed there to execute illegal police functions.

The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.

This is actually smart. ICE can't do anything about protesters in cyberteucks or else they'll finally be labeled as terrorists.

A lot of clever sensible ideas are implicitly appended with "... and then no one gets mad and everyone shuts up about it."

Democratic politicians and liberal pundits bemoaning the LA protests need to understand that as *their* failure. None of this would be happening if they had offered effective resistance to mass deportation (extraordinary rendition, in truth) instead of considering undocumented people expendable.

A nontrivial number of Americans truly think that Portland and Minneapolis are mere piles of ash post-George Floyd uprisings. The eagerness to self-delude in this movement is so bizarre.

No country has ever been destroyed by migrants just wanting a better life for their family. Many though have been destroyed by authoritarianism and fascism.

This is important meta analysis. We’re experiencing a national news story with Constitutional crisis implications, but most of LA wouldn’t know it without press. The population of Los Angeles County is larger than 42 states. This place is ginormous.

These young Californians have something to say. I hope you’ll listen. “The kids in the Cages” by The Neighborhood Kids @theneighborhoodkidsmusic

It’s almost like someone in a position of great power and influence has encouraged Americans to think of the press as “the enemy of the people.”

Detainees inside the LA Federal detention center are flashing their lights for protesters.
