Reasonable, minimal collective action for a better scholarly publishing ecosystem

You can freeze omelettes?!?

this is a letter to the editor from a high school track runner who came in second to a trans girl in a race. her state house rep in maine started talking about it. so she wrote this: www.pressherald.com/2025/05/14/r...

A literal miracle - saving this beautiful baby's life with a miraculous procedure built on decades of federal investments in scientific research. Think of how many more we could save. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/15/h...

14yo is astute

For anyone working on insect neurobiology who is looking for a tenure-track position

Merlin has made it possible for people who can’t afford field guides to learn their local birds. In many disadvantaged areas, those people can then find work as birding guides for international tourists. Merlin has worldwide benefits. @cornellbirds.bsky.social

30 April 1945 | As Soviet forces neared his command bunker in Berlin Adolf Hitler shot himself. Hitler's Thousand Year Reich lasted twelve years, four months & eight days. We need to commemorate all the victims & remember where ideologies of hatred may lead humanity to.

Same goes for "No offense, but..." Instead, just shut up.

“From April 14-18, select UBC graduate programs at UBC Vancouver will re-open their applications for US citizens to be considered for Sept 2025 or Jan 2026 entry - they are ready to provide quick admissions decisions for these applicants“ #gradstudent #gradschool www.grad.ubc.ca/us-applicant...

We heard anecdotally that Canadians weren’t visiting the states, now we have the data. A massive, shocking drop.

Wild to see this gibberish being pointed at Canada

Tate is like Trump in this sense: the most grotesque thing is not that he exists, but that he’s hugely popular, and what that says about us as a species.

Very embarrassing for Canada

Scoop --> Trump-Musk cuts just resulted in the firing of numerous top researchers at NIH's center for combating Alzheimer's, sources tell me. They predict big setbacks to fighting dementias. This cause was once championed by *Republicans.* Details here: newrepublic.com/article/1917...

Ms. Ghasemzadeh described a sweltering encampment, overrun with cats and dogs. Then, she sent a text message saying that the authorities were confiscating all phones. Her last words: “Please try to help us.” Don't look away. This is happening. Read ⬇️. And, this is why a free press is essential.

Trump and RFK Jr starting to go after some of the world's most successful and impactful outcomes of neuroscience research

I had to check this wasn't some sort of deepfake. This monster can get stuffed. Getting far worse than even I thought it would be. Solidarity with our Canadian friends and allies.

Whenever you hear someone sneer about scientific research that seems useless to them — “they’re studying the spit of lizards?!” — remind them that’s exactly how we got Ozempic. globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Not everyone can fight Trumpism and Trumpists directly. But remember this: kindness, decency, and fidelity to American values are defiance in the face of Trumpism. So be kind, decent, and faithful, particularly to the many kinds of people despised and attacked by Trumpists. That’s revolutionary./1

I vote that birds, and short-eared owls in particular, can be nemesis birds even if you've seen them before. They are a nemesis bird for me despite having seen one, briefly, 15 years ago. I just can't seem to intersect with them again, despite being a pretty common bird over a huge range.

This seems like it’d be a good thing ecologically but a bad thing economically

I did it again! Jurassic Park with accurate raptors, a short part 2 #jurassicpark #blender3d

As always I'm late to the party, but 'Hundreds of Beavers' is nothing short of a masterpiece. I'm serious. This is one of the funniest movies I've seen in years. An absurdist slapstick fever dream that I can't wait to re-watch. www.youtube.com/watch?v=m39i...

People sometimes make fun of science that sounds stupid and random. Meanwhile, a study of lizard saliva turned into a peptide medication, which was turned into a diabetes medication, which was turned into a GLP1 weight loss drug, that just became the first therapy every approved for … sleep apnea

Well this seems bad

Paul Bernardo I remember listening from the stairs as my parents whispered about it after bed time.
