one more thought that I think deserves its own thread: if I were a lib I'd spend 1000% less time on the weird unforced error of apologetics for the Jeffersons and Hamiltons of the liberal political tradition and 1000% more time venerating its Lafayettes and Lincolns

I think about this a lot, and it is always a conversation with students. Slightly earlier comparison that we do: I have them read the “shining city on a hill” speech against the “true levelers standard.” Conflicting—Dissenting—views of Genesis and the world it sets up for us. If only.

I highly recommend listening to this episode of Kreative Kontrol by @vishkhanna.bsky.social interviewing @fkabundy.bsky.social, @steamroom.bsky.social and #GlennKotche on the two new Tim Barnes albums coming this Friday on #DragCity, and lots more including Tim's work with Wilco, Jim O'Rourke...

They’re going to try to make you feel insane for opposing this war. They’ll ignore protests and downplay any opposition. They’ll try to strongarm you into submission. They did it with Iraq and they’ll do it again. And then a few years later they’ll pretend they were with you all along.

took my dog for a walk. people gathered outside a bar were talking abt how no one wants this war. several blocks away, people gathered near an open fire hydrant (it's 91 F tonight) were talking abt how no one wants this war. a guy playing accordion to the cars at augusta & western, you guessed it

@helendecruz.net (1978-2025), RIP open.substack.com/pub/digressi...

Missing Helen & trying to think of the best way to honor them. Perhaps it is to let myself be useless. Count grass. Maybe sand. Helen wrote,” joy doesn't always come spontaneously. Much like wonder, you have to make space for it in your life” & so I will try. helendecruz.substack.com/p/finding-joy

An utterly profound loss. What a brilliant and fantastic person. A genuine, real philosopher who will be missed. May Helen’s work live on.

I just found out that Helen de Cruz's has died and i am literally without words. Oh this is so fucking cruel

COLUMN: The preponderance of wealthaganda on TV is at odds with our lived experiences & what we see unfolding on the news, not just in the last 6 months but the past several yrs. These stories of status exist to do ~what~ in our current moment? I talk with @bakerdphd.bsky.social about it! Gift 🔗✨

Helen is, I think, one of the most exciting and moving thinkers and writers whose work I’ve gotten to know over the past few years, primarily over social media. This will be really wonderful.

When my publisher asked for a sample cover for The Celluloid Specimen, I sent them this.

@bradlander.bsky.social: "I was in a DHS detention for about 3.5 hours... I'm going to sleep at home in my bed tonight, safe with my family. But at Edgardo, who I was trying to accompany, he is in ICE detention. God knows where he's going to sleep tonight. And who knows what state."

So @whitneycwimbish.bsky.social did a writeup of Brad Lander's arrest today at 26 Federal Plaza in NYC, focusing not just on Lander's treatment, but the treatment of immigrants inside, both in the courtroom and once they are detained. prospect.org/justice/2025...

This is why so many of Trump’s public interpreters are young white women. They bring this to his toolkit. Did anyone else read Jeff’s piece on this re: Noem? It is in the pocket. religiondispatches.org/dont-take-th...

Guys please get off Substack!

Something that I think weighs on many is that everyone knows that if ever the Democrats were fully in power at the Federal level again, they will not immediately move to reverse what has been destroyed and build something new. This reality just sits out there like an anchor.

As marines descend on LA, as Trump moves closer and closer to martial law, it will be tempting to victim-blame. To equivocate. To find some reason the protesters deserve what’s coming. They don’t.

Boycott Uber. Take public transit, bike or walk. If you must use rideshare hail a cab or call a Lyft. Do not give Uber your money.

I get tired of people who take themselves too seriously. We are all little dumb dumbs doing the best we can, just get a grip

Mass protests are an implicit threat of potential violence even when they are entirely peaceful. They serve to keep state power in check by demonstrating “there are more of us than you so fix your shit.” The state knows this, which is why its agents often respond to them with unprovoked violence.
