NYT: 5 Places to Turn for Accurate Health Information (gift link) Changes to federal health websites have raised concerns about their reliability. These independent sources offer an alternative www.nytimes.com/2025/04/28/w...

23 & me went bankrupt. Their (your) data could end up… I dunno where. Gift link: wapo.st/4kUsBEF

Um, wow. "This year, the AMA hasn’t sent a single letter or issued any news releases opposing Medicaid cuts. By contrast, the group has issued seven news releases since January on the lack of congressional action on physician fees." kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

A 22 year-old in Wisconsin was told his asthma meds would cost $500. He left the pharmacy without them — and died within two weeks, per a lawsuit filed by his parents. Here's some things @bailypark.bsky.social and I wish he'd known, from Wisconsin Public Radio. www.wpr.org/news/cant-af...

Some takeaways from the FDA confirmation hearing for Dr. Marty Makary: 1. He was very polite 2. He gave a crack of light to foes of the abortion pill 3. He may do performative vaccine reviews; he complained about required Covid vaccines for kids. Who requires that? www.nytimes.com/2025/03/06/h...

The No Surprises Act protects patients from some out-of-network bills. Been wondering: How’s the federal office that helps enforce that law doing right now? Answer: Um, not great. kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

We’ve been tracking one piece of the Trump administration’s slash/burn campaign: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau— and its role helping people with medical debts. A federal court has barred further cuts, for now. But… firstaidkit.substack.com/p/a-medical-...

Is anyone archiving the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's website? Lots of important info there. Also, this list of state consumer-protection offices —the best that I'm finding right now — seems to be on a federal website. Maybe it needs a home too? www.usa.gov/state-consumer

Today's hearing on the Trump admin's attempt to shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Bloomberg Law reporter live-skeeting from Amy Berman Jackson's courtroom...

I wrote up the now five different cases where CFPB dismissed the lawsuits, essentially clearing the decks of litigation and enforcement, all while its nominee to run the agency was in his Senate confirmation hearing. (The dek has been changed, it's five cases now) prospect.org/economy/2025...

“I felt my stomach sink to the floor” — a credit counselor, when news broke that Trump officials were closing the Comsumer Financial Protection Bureau. We also hear from @nclc4consumers.bsky.social on the fight to re-open it. armandalegshow.com/episode/cfpb/

My colleague @clairedavenport.bsky.social is helping her roommate push back against $14.5K in medical bills -- and sharing what she learns in our First Aid Kit newsletter. It's a saga. Chapter 1 came out today... firstaidkit.substack.com/p/how-my-roo...

House Republicans propose significant Medicaid cuts in their new budget resolution, sparking concerns even among GOP members.

🚨Texas measles outbreak nears 100 cases, w/16 hospitalizations. Officials suspect it's spilled just across the border to New Mexico. Low vax rates+undetected infections mean it will grow. “This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better” My latest kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

Starting today, I'll be writing "First Aid Kit" for "An Arm and a Leg" -- a newsletter started by @danweissmann.bsky.social on how to survive the evolving health care landscape in America. We're going weekly, so now is the perfect time to subscribe! Check us out here: firstaidkit.substack.com

Have the @DOGE folks made it to the part of the system yet that shows private Medicare Advantage plans get paid by the government 22% more than costs would be in traditional Medicare?

I haven't seen this reported elsewhere, but if so it's a bit of good news. www.mprnews.org/story/2025/0...

🚨 Urgent CDC analyses on seasonal flu, bird flu in cats & in wastewater have been stalled. And CDC has stopped contributing flu data to global platforms, says WHO. “Delays in data create dangerous situations on the front line.” My latest @kffhealthnews.org kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

With RFK Jr saying he wants to stop NIH doing infectious disease research “for 8 years” and Trump now slashing the NIH and CDC workforce, what exactly is the plan for tackling the H5N1 bird flu outbreak?

Hey! Just learned that An Arm and a Leg is nominated for an Ambie Award (like the Oscars, but for podcasts). Congrats to our pals at @kuow.org and @kffhealthnews.org on nominations for "Lost Patients" and "Silence in Sikeston" — and to all the nominees! www.ambies.com/2025-nominee...

NEW: Medicare Advantage beneficiaries who are suing UnitedHealth Group over allegedly wrongful denials of care that were based on artificial intelligence scored a victory Thursday, as a judge ruled their case could move forward. Could open up discovery. www.statnews.com/2025/02/13/l...

It's also the largest health coverage program in America. You definitely know people who rely on it for their coverage. ANY funding cuts to Medicaid, however they're described (per-capita caps, work requirements, block grants, etc.) will result in vulnerable people losing coverage.

Rep. Dr. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) did not appreciate NYU Langone running a Super Bowl ad when it spends relatively little on charity. So he's asking the institution to explain. "NYU Langone’s charity care expenses, 1.2 percent in 2020, are reportedly less than half the national average of 2.6 percent"

Oh hey. “The agreement, which is subject to the approval of the US District Court for the District of New Jersey, states that Novo Nordisk has agreed to cap the price of its insulin products at $35 per month for all Minnesotans, with or without insurance, for at least five years.”

The CFPB “is the sole regulator for nonbank lenders. Those companies hold a large share of the $13 trillion mortgage market.” … and just issued a rule banning medical debts from credit reports. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/09/b...

Anecdote from my barber pal: ER doc, in for a trim, said a colleague’s kid, sick, needed steroid meds. Hospital had a dose— packaged as injectable but ok to take orally. The bill: $1K for an injectable. The morals - Docs don’t know what the bill will be - Bill is for the label, not the contents 😡

Do you want to complain about high drug costs?? Intrepid Health Care Reporter @danweissmann.bsky.social wants you to complain to him: armandalegshow.com/episode/tell...

Something I'm trying to do right now: 1) Send a note to a colleague (or stranger or competitor) each day calling out their awesome work or some/another success. 2) Send a note each day to someone who is suffering or who may be and could probably use a boost. It's giving *me* a boost to do it, too.

We're collecting stories for An Arm and a Leg about your bespoke strategies for getting the medicine you need in a society that makes it really hard. Gimme your worst here and check out Dan's post for a list of some tried and (often) true existing options: armandalegshow.com/drugs/

We’ve summarized the (main, inaqdequate) ways to get prescription drugs for cheaper — with help from @benro.me. One of ‘em might work for you. And: you might know something we don’t. We’d love you to chime in. As always, paywall-free. firstaidkit.substack.com/p/how-to-may...

Oh wow

If you're a journalist downloading CDC data today, please consider filling out this form so we have a centralized guide to who has what. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Wow. Is this an outlier? Or…? “The price of a 42.5-gram tube of vaginal estrogen cream was $22.48 on Cost Plus Drugs, compared to $293.66 through Medicare Part D.” journals.lww.com/fpmrs/fullte...

🧪The CDCs weekly science report is indefinitely on hold, stalling important bird flu studies. This unprecedented freeze sparks concerns of political meddling in science. "If it’s not short-lived, it’s censorship.” My latest @kffhealthnews.bsky.social kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

On today's @21st.show, we spoke with @danweissmann.bsky.social and @evarything.bsky.social of @unduemeddebt.bsky.social about navigating medical debt and the impact a pilot program in Illinois has done so far. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBfo...

We need to hear from scientists and staffers about what is happening at federal agencies. 👇

“We have productivity metrics,” an insurance-company doc tells @mirandayaver..bsky.social “We probably have 10 or 15 minutes or so to do reviews and depending on the case, that may not be adequate. And we’re told denying things is OK because people can appeal.” www.statnews.com/2025/01/23/h...

NEW: Planned Parenthood of Illinois is shuttering four clinics that provided abortion pills amid a “financial shortfall” stemming from rising costs of care and an influx of patients who need assistance. The affiliate's president and CEO stepped down on January 8. www.jezebel.com/planned-pare...

Bloomberg analyzed more than 2,000 videos from 9 YouTubers popular with young men.
