Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security.    Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.   Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people. —Harry Truman, 1952

Spanish PM defended Spain’s decision to spend 2.1% of its GDP on NATO – saying it was “a sufficient and realistic volume of investment” that would allow the country to protect its welfare state. Starmer no-where to be seen

I’m losing count of the number of football teams now who have a Pep Guardiola look-alike manager. Is there a lab somewhere cloning them.

Sky News reporting Zohran Mamdani's victory in New York. We're told it shows the further polarisation of politics in the states. Maybe what it actually shows is that New Yorkers want free childcare, a rent freeze, proper affordable housing and free buses.

It turns out that when the Labour leadership demonstrated their hatred of democracy by smothering all internal dissent in the Labour party, it was a clue to what they might be like in government. Who knew!?

I wonder why this Labour government is so staunch in its refusal to criticise Israel’s actions in Gaza, and so authoritarian in its suppression of criticism by others? #Captured #BoughtAndPaidFor

Thames Water's greedy creditors have *no leverage* Investors have written down their stakes to ZERO The company's debt can be WIPED OUT using existing legislation The creditors can't offer a better deal than permanent public ownership What is the government waiting for?

That would be an ecumenical matter

The Hitchhiker's Guide to Brexit: a coping strategy 🧵 The plans for Brexit are on display in the darkened basement of the Department for Exiting the European Union at the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Unicorn" #HGTB

"Labour is committed to championing the rights of disabled people and to the principle of working with them, so that their views and voices will be at the heart of all we do." Labour Manifesto 2024

Israel has killed more Palestinians in Gaza in the last 24 hours than the combined death toll of the Israel-Iran conflict This impunity, enabled by global moral failure, will echo through history www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/6/...

BREAKING: The country that bombed every building in Gaza and gunned civilians down while they were queuing for food says that Iran does not respect civilian lives 😭😭😭

".. where justice is done for the Grenfell community" How many people have gone to prison over what happened? How many are being prosecuted?

💯%!

“A Labour government is in power and we are still debating whether the state should help children who are cold and hungry.” In tomorrow’s @theguardian.com, my col. on Starmer’s u-turns (and why pensioners are easier to defend than disabled people or poor kids). www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Rayner: scrapping the two child benefit cap isn't a silver bullet. Scrapping the cap is the single measure that would have the biggest impact on reducing child poverty. It'd lift over 300,000 children out of poverty immediately & improve the circumstances of another 800,000 kids

🇮🇱 burned alive 9 children of a doctor The fact that we are watching their singed bodies be removed from their home and the word “REPORTEDLY” is still added to this headline speaks volumes and the WHITE LIBERAL MEDIA For 19 months Palestinians have held their dead children before the world’s eyes

Kendall states going ahead with cuts is “crucial to fighting the rise in populist politics”. I say stopping them is essential partly for the same reason. Mostly because there is no justifiable reason for plunging hundreds of thousands of disabled citizens into poverty. #Stopthecuts #LabourAusterity

Don't let anyone tell you it's "complicated". It's clear as day. It's been clear as day since 1947. #FreePalestine #GazaHolocaust

Wise words👇

Thames Water £3bn emergency loan is going straight into bosses' bonuses Executives will pocket millions in bonuses - because its boss thinks that him and the rest of senior management are the company's "most precious resource". Yes, he really said that. www.thecanary.co/uk/analysis/...

"The fact that - on top of everything else - Palantir's NHS offer is just not very good does make one wonder about the source of Wes Streeting's enthusiasm for it. And why the hapless Keir Starmer was dragged along to endorse them by Peter Mandelson." open.substack.com/pub/democrac...

Labour has a whopping great majority and four years left to turn this country around. They should be setting the agenda, not chasing about trying to placate voters of a party with five MPs who will never vote for them anyway. It's not only disappointing... it's embarrassing

In his press conference on immigration this morning Starmer stressed the need for the UK to comply with international law. Just not the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, or enforcing ICC arrest warrants, or taking action on ICJ rulings, right?

Labour are teaching us that if you have over 400 MPs and are in the first year of government, so no need for elections until 2029, you should definitely focus your policies on what a party with five MPs is calling for, rather than doing what's best for the country,

Incredibly depressing day. I've spent my entire life being told by British governments how dreadful immigration is. New Labour did it. The Coalition. The Brexiters. Now Starmer. All of them accusing the ones who came before them of failing to clamp down. The same old vacant mean-spirited bollocks.

Feeling at lot of ‘Grown ups’ need to hear this today

Yet again the Guardian overlooks the elephant in the room: £64 billion of public money is being spent on 74 SEZs and 12 Freeports over the next 25 years. Deregulated Free zones are stealth killers of the commons, they are a costly and inefficient policy. 1/4 www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Rachel Reeves & Labour have repeatedly said they didn't want to cut the universal winter fuel allowance for pensioners but it was a tough decision forced on them because of the financial black hole left by the last govt. Here's Rachel Reeves in 2014:

They reckon the law had been clarified, but I just asked the guy in Cafe Nero if I could use the toilet, and he said I could, but he didn't even check my penis! Why bother putting in all that effort to look your best if no one is checking penises?

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

Privilege is when things aren’t a problem until they affect you personally

Streeting "I'm going hard at the levels of bureaucracy in the NHS" If this was true you'd be scrapping the internal market. But you're not so it isnt. What you have done is given an NHS contact worth over £1bn to a profiteering private healthcare company owned by private equity

My MP @miketapp.bsky.social doesn’t seem to post very often on here.

Compare and Contrast. Mike Tapp - Labour (sic) MP for Dover and Deal.

By focusing on immigration and the Reform UK agenda, Labour effectively vindicate the belief that migrants are the reason they aren't better off, with better public services. They are creating more Reform UK voters. It's morally wrong and politically suicidal.

This man knew! Today’s politicians are political and intellectual pygmies compared to him. #FDR

Mainstream radio presenters like Vanessa Feltz are perfectly happy to contribute, in their own small way, to the rise of the extreme far right. Her interview with me on LBC just now was chock full of lies. Calls herself a journalist. Really I wonder how they sleep at night.

THIS IS SOME FUNNY SHIT

The BBC are genuinely thrilled by what’s happening with Reform. The BBC know they’ve made Reform by giving them repeated prominent coverage, by giving Farage their backing and by refusing to give coverage to other parties. Their reporters seem thrilled this morning, barely containing their glee.
