My column: During construction half of the lanes at Portage and Main were closed. After a few weeks, congestion dissipated and traffic ran normally. A lesson that might allow us to reduce the width of the intersection and add new public space in the future. www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/anal...

Play and repost this all weekend long Canada! 🍁💪

Pedestrians step out onto Portage and Main for first time in decades. "Finally." As @emmaewood.bsky.social indicates, "This intersection being closed has been such a chasm or an abyss in the middle of the city. Really, it just takes away from people being able to move." t.ly/117FQ

Congrats, Winnipeg, for doing the thing because it turned out to be cheaper.

Yahoo! The day has arrived! I looked back at advocacy I and others @greenactioncentre.bsky.social did in 2018 around Vote Open. Take a look back with us, followed by a step forward across Portage and Main! OPENING DAY! - Green Action Centre share.google/52VBtB6TUA48... #voteOpen #portageandmain

City report....on Wellington Crescent. "They're going to get all the feedback about how much people might not like the idea & then install the pilot." This will not be about "percolating" ideas, it will be all the voices opposed to changes. t.ly/RqNFu

When you turn on a light only to discover a rattlesnake, turning off the light doesn't make the snake disappear. It just means you can no longer see the snake. Feels like that's what's happening with all the weather and climate monitoring tools that we're losing, with SSMIS as the latest casualty.

I wish we could be more like elephants 🐘 ❤️👇🏼

But by all means, let's build MORE oil & gas pipelines so we can burn the planet even faster and make this even worse. #EndFossilFuels #MbPoli www.theglobeandmail.com/business/eco...

NEW STUDY: A new study “confirms what many riders already know—cycling to work makes you healthier, more productive, and even reduces sick days.” “The most active cyclists chalked up 531 fewer sick days per 100 person-years compared to non-cyclists.” Via @momentummag.bsky.social

"The Tories’ attack on this policy is very much in keeping with the hilariously dishonest and fallacious tack the party took before and during the election. They have not met a fact that could not be perverted to their own cause. Their talk-track on EVs is a perfect example."

"Drivers do not seem to understand what (1.5 meter) that is." Clearly with the Manitoba Government looking at only a 1 meter passing distance does not "understand" real safety. At a minimum we need 1.5 meters when speeds exceed 50 kph.

It’s why people ‘rat race’ through housing estates or school zones because they’re late for work. It’s why people park in bicycle lanes because they can just go around, or because they ‘don’t need all that space’. It’s why many of us experience anxiety when we walk...or when we cycle...."

"When you don’t spend money on bigger, longer, wider roads, you have a lot of additional money to spend on other things, including walkability, active & public transportation & promoting densification of residential development. These are the building blocks of sustainable, livable downtowns."

The irony that a series of bike rides highlighting the urgency of the climate crisis being disrupted by erratic weather is not lost on me. #winnipeg
