Correct. A generation of young scientists can be lost in 4 years, and on top of that, scientists (mainly) in China will have done the research you originally planned, and you won't have gained the insights from doing it yourself that would have helped you write grants to move on to the next level.

Many jobs in the military I find highly impressive, but the ability of people to do them make sense. Eg train a lot, at some point you will be able to carry a backpack really far. Landing a helicopter on a rolling deck is one of the things I just don’t understand how you learn without first dying 😅

I would have a bit more sympathy with this view point if employers weren’t doing pretty much sweet FA to train staff themselves. Another way of looking at this would be that they get a massive state subsidy in the form of skilled graduates and technical staff and still they complain….
