(Reuters) - FEMA staff left baffled after the disaster agency's head said during a briefing that he hadn't been aware the US has a hurricane season. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/fema-staff-confused-after-head-said-he-was-unaware-us-hurricane-season-sources-2025-06-02/

I dug into the NSF cuts & other ways that the Trump administration is shutting down climate science. “Basically it’s a shit show,” Princeton’s Michael Oppenheimer says, “and how bad a shit show it is will depend a lot on what happens in the courts and Congress over the next few months.”

This is extraordinary. A database tracking legal decisions in cases where generative #AI produced hallucinated content; both fabricated citations and ficticious court rulings. 112 cases so far; 19 this month: www.damiencharlotin.com/hallucinatio... Source: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Hard to believe they’re talking about the same event.

Senators coming for my job now.

Starve science and you harm the nation snd its future. What happens when you have national leaders who don’t believe in the future? www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Excited to be part of the Woodwell team at the Mountain Film Festival in Telluride this week. Reach out and say hi if you happen to be at the event. Also, be sure to grab a coffee at Telco coffee shop and take a peek at some beautiful maps/art while you're here. www.telluridenews.com/news/article...

Woodwell Climate's President and CEO Dr. Max Holmes spoke with Sachi Kitajima Mulkey @grist.org about what's at stake with unprecedented cuts to federal climate science funding and staffing. grist.org/science/amer...

Thank you @permafrostpathways.bsky.social ! I am very excited that this special issue is out there with articles from RedFire, Community Wildfire Protection Plans from AVF, articles on the Wildland Fire Initiative, the upcoming Expert Group, just a ton of great contributors here.

Congratulations to Edward Alexander @gwandaii.bsky.social for developing this special Arctic issue of #Wildfire magazine in partnership with the #ArcticCouncil and the International Association of Wildland Fire. Sue Natali and Brendan Rogers also authored an article on wildfire and #permafrost thaw.

“Let’s be ambitious enough to work together on wildland fire outside of the initiative in a real way.” Congratulations, Edward Alexander, whose term as Head of Delegation for Gwich'in Council International to the Arctic Council concludes this week. Excited to be the Mountainfilm 2025 mural artist in Telluride! My mural, "Cartographies of Arctic Change" (a massive 26.5' x 36'!), visualizes our Arctic research. It's going up now on Telco Coffee, a wall previously graced by JR, Gregg Deal, Banksy, and more. Come see it in Telluride!

Finally, a pope who probably knows who the Smashing Pumpkins are

Where does Pope Leo stand on climate change? He believes it's time to move "from words to action" (he's right on that!) and has previously highlighted the actions the Vatican is taking to reduce its own emissions through solar panels and electric vehicles. Read more:

A team from @woodwellclimate.bsky.social joined the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission today to talk abt climate hazards & the risk assessment that we completed for Chicopee, MA. Proud to have provided pro-bono climate risk assessments to more than 60 communities around the world, with more to come.

"The risks Arctic fires pose on local ecosystems and the communities that depend on them, as well as the destabilizing effect they can have on the global climate, require a rethinking of how fires will be managed in the future." Powerful StoryMap from @gwandaii.bsky.social @gridarendal.bsky.social

New Pope is a climate guy. Fired up

not saying anyone should, but I bet you could convince Trump to re-open Alcatraz in under 20 minutes

Insurance is the issue that will force many politicians to deal with climate change. Tune in now to watch my @whitehouse.senate.gov and my colleague Dominick Dusseau speak about "Insurance in the Era of Climate Change," at a congressional briefing hosted by @eesionline.org: www.eesi.org/livecast

It's hard to imagine a dumber time in human history than what we're living through right now

After the Trump admin dismissed the scientists working on the key National Climate Assessment, two major science societies are picking up where they left off: www.cnn.com/2025/05/02/c...

Trump just now: "We are going to be taking away Harvard's tax exempt status." 26 U.S. Code § 7217: "It shall be unlawful for any applicable person to request an ...investigation of any particular taxpayer with respect to the tax liability of such taxpayer." The president is an applicable person.

National Science Foundation staff were told on April 30 to “stop awarding all funding actions until further notice.” This follows closely on a new NSF policy to screen grant proposals for “topics or activities that may not be in alignment with agency priorities.” www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Forest stability is a measurement of a forest's resistance to disturbances, both manmade and natural. This map by @cmshintani.bsky.social shows that forest stability is a marker of our oldest, strongest forests.

The Trump Administration today dismissed researchers working on the *congressionally mandated* National Climate Assessment and said the scope of the report “is currently being re-evaluated.” www.nytimes.com/2025/04/28/c...

“The American public needs to understand that you can’t just turn a science switch off and then turn it back on again,” said Rick Spinrad. Great reporting by @sachimulkey.bsky.social on the current dismantling of US scientific research capacity: what it means for now--and for future generations.

My last story as a Grist fellow was published today. Thank you to the entire team; I am so honored to have spent the last year learning from such an excellent group of journalists and editors, I owe each of them more than I can put into words. Peep the article & timeline here: tinyurl.com/yx5wsvas

“One of the things that has made America great and will keep America great is our scientific excellence and world leadership in climate science,” said Woodwell Center President Max Holmes “Gutting those things will send our country in a different direction.” grist.org/science/amer...

Wildland fire in the Arctic is changing rapidly. With half the state of Alaska lacking snow cover and experiencing deep drying, fuels are prepped, if the early spring produces some lightning, for fire. We could be off to the races to add another red stripe, maybe a much longer one than we've seen.

A map of past and projected maximum thaw depth in Alaska for today’s #MapMonday from @gfiske.bsky.social.

Good news for Earth Day! Nine U.S. states have set goals to conserve 30% of their land by 2030-and MD got there first. This story is part of a NYT series, "50 States, 50 Fixes." Tune into NPR at 10AM eastern this morning to hear from authors @carabuckley.bsky.social, @catrineinhorn.bsky.social & I.

A guy at Dunks the other day asked me to get them to stop spraying the skies. And at first I thought no one can possibly be that ridiculous...he's messing with me But nope. That's where we're at

"The climate is a common good, belonging to all and meant for all... A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system." - Laudato Si (2015), from Pope Francis. www.vatican.va/content/fran...

Pope Francis last year on those who deny climate science: "There are people who are foolish, and even foolish if they show you them research. They don't believe it…They don't understand the situation or because of their interest, but climate change exists." www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article...

Your friendly reminder that it is literally a federal felony punishable by up to five years in prison for the President, Vice President, or any employee of the White House to directly or indirectly ask the IRS to open an investigation into any specific taxpayer.
