bigly strategic, obvs

Not surprising, but pretty important as definitely under appreciated, especially by our students who use LLMs!

and in other news, the cover of my new book is here! The book's not out until November (open access with @mitpress.bsky.social), but am liking the green colour!

Missed #caturday but painted this, this morning, with some of the oak gall ink I made last month.

Private Eye exposing again the utter idiocy of our politics. This sums up *exactly* how Farage and Reform get rocket-boosted by a media, drunk on sensationalist nonsense. Unserious and irresponsible but it’ll be up to us to prove them wrong.

just some required viewing for Kemi and her cohorts

Went to see this really excellent performance at The Place about section 28. theplace.org.uk/events/summe...

This is really sad - I think 'A Boy’s Own Story' was one of the first gay novels I'd ever read @davidadger.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/books/2025/j...

Dougie didn’t come home until 6am this morning and is now zonked. What an after party that must have been. #caturday

Happy to have my translation of this poem published in the new issue of GrandJournal. The original by Sorley MacLean turns on the fact you can use the Gaelic ciall, 'sense, reason, meaning' as a term of endearment (mo chiall=my love), so doubleness pervades the poem even though it denies it! #poetry

Delighted to announce the publication of a collaborative effort, co-led by @limorraviv.bsky.social @mpi-nl.bsky.social, showcasing the ways in which researchers have made language evolution an empirical issue: A handbook of experimental approaches to the fascinating problem of language evolution 🧪

New ALILI episode! Episode 35 of ALILI is a step into a new language family: Niger-Congo. Our way into this corner of the linguistic world is Dza, an endangered language spoken in northeastern Nigeria, as introduced by Peace Benson. Listen on Acast or elsewhere: shows.acast.com/a-language-i...

Very Excited to have the wonderful @wmartina.bsky.social visiting us at Queen Mary Linguistics this week as this year's Quirk Fellow. Come along to her talks if you are in London www.qmul.ac.uk/sllf/linguis... @qmullinguistics.bsky.social

The prime minister warns that immigration could turn Britain into an ‘island of strangers’. Author and poet @michaelrosenyes.bsky.social responds #MigrantsWelcomeHere www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Excellent deconstruction of the Universities Minister’s total lack of knowledge (never mind understanding) of her portfolio. Depressing how unserious the government is about one of the UK’s most important export markets and source of soft power.

This letter from Tony Vaughan KC, the MP for Folkestone, is the clearest articulation I’ve seen on the flaws of the interim update from the EHRC. The section titled ‘Legal Incoherence’ hits the nail on the head.

I do hope our wonderful media keep in mind that Reform still has fewer council seats than any other whole-UK party.

strategically illiterate indeed - it'll also push lifelong labour voters (👋) to the Greens; with Labour's current take on trans issues, disability, poverty & immigration, it's hard to think of voting again for my own MP @calvinbailey.bsky.social (who hasn't bothered to respond to me on these issues)

Now emancipated from its paywall. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-v...

Cool video about the work my colleague Kathleen McCarthy is doing in the multilingual communities of Tower Hamlets on language acquisition and education, for which she was just awarded a Civic Award! @qmullinguistics.bsky.social @qmul.ac.uk @towerhamletsnow.bsky.social youtu.be/pWntOaQBIiI?... 🐦🐦

I could not agree more with this. We did not give them a mandate to cos-play Reform-lite. And yes, use income tax to create a fairer society

We found that focus in TID is not only realized as duration increase in focused signs, but also as duration decrease in the extended domain. Sign languages use different domains (manual and nonmanual) to mark focus yielding crosslinguistic patterns. www.glossa-journal.org/article/id/1...

Have always loved this sonnet - I used to see the skylarks flying up from the protected area on Wanstead Flats during covid times early morning walks, and it would just leap into my head. Thanks @poemsonthetube.bsky.social

This statement from the NSF is insane. Science is, in essence, designed to separate the true from the false. Understanding how falsehoods spread is key to the scientific endeavor. It is not a violation of free speech to be proven wrong.

Section 28 didn’t come out of nowhere. It came from a society where 75% thought homosexuality was wrong. From a society that feared the sight of a man in drag would corrupt. From a society that believed ignorance was better for children than any knowledge of gay lives. 🧵 1/16

Given the state of the US, there's an opportunity for UK HE to stick its nostrils above the waves for a bit and keep paddling, but the govt's terror about Reform in the red wall will, it seems, block that and leave one of the UK's international export successes to drown. Totally irrational.
