"Imagine the auto industry without 3D printing. NSF funded that. Artificial intelligence? NSF. MRI machines that help doctors diagnose you? NSF. Doppler radar technology that makes aviation safer by conquering wind shear? NSF. Duolingo‘s underlying programming? NSF. The internet itself? NSF."

This seems like an existential threat to Hungary's independent sector. Besides practically forbidding any criticism of Hungary's "democracy" if an organization or media outlet receives foreign funding (including EU money), it would make receiving domestic funding difficult as well.

Who wouldn't want an early 20-something crypto bro with no scientific training in direct control of the entire National Science Foundation and billions of dollars in grants?

Racist and sexist roots in the cancellation of NSF grants under Trump: Grants with female PIs canceled 2x more than men Grants with Black PIs canceled 4x over White PIs Grants with Hispanic PIs canceled 2x over White PIs Grants with PIs with disabilities canceled 2x more than without

At Geisinger we have created a new team to conduct and publish rigorous evaluations of important health system initiatives, programs, and interventions. I'm one of the faculty co-directors of this group and I'm happy to say we have two new positions open! (1/2)

This is a big, big deal.

The worst happened. We were DOGE’d. Our NSF funding is gone. So now there’s nothing stopping me from sharing Expert Voices Together, a crisis response system for US-based researchers and journalists facing harassment. It's a true passion project. 🧵 1/ expertvoicestogether.org

Read the whole thing. You won’t be surprised, but you should be outraged.

"For me, the answer now lies in refusal, the withdrawal of participation from systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging." Today I am resigning from the National Science Board and the Library of Congress Scholars Council. I wrote about my decision in TIME. time.com/7285045/resi...

"Governance should not be understood as an impediment to AI innovation but as an essential component of it." A new article in the National Academy of Engineering's The Bridge from @alondra.bsky.social discusses the value of policy and governance for AI systems. Read now: buff.ly/sFRy6qW

House GOP just unveiled $4 Trillion in tax cuts - overwhelmingly for the wealthy - in a country that already leads the developed world in inequality. Look at where the US stands right now: Top 1%: 20% of income CEO pay: 354x workers Child poverty: 21% And they want to make it worse. On purpose.🧵⬇️

Previously, "rotators" are be active scientists who serve 2-4 years at NSF, injecting the agency's direction with fresh insights from the field. But now, those rotator positions are being slashed. Will further restrict direct exchanges between agency officials and the active scientific community.

This is so fucked up. Sorry that’s the academic description for it. They are really dismantling everything

🧪Heavy heart for my colleagues at NSF who were RIFed today - especially the entire cadre of EES. Your efforts to increase pathways into #STEM Education for all people have made an impact that cannot be ignored or erased. @science.org @scinews.bsky.social @standupforscience.bsky.social #SciSky #EDU

My new paper doi.org/10.1093/esr/... explains that personal networks expose us to different degrees to economic distress, which shapes public opinion (here, institutional trust). Yet institutional trust research has largely overlooked networks. #sociology #netsky

New from me: Everything feels overwhelming. But here is a tangible thing you can do: write a comment to oppose Trump's plan to convert 50,000 career civil servants into political appointees. Deadline is May 23. Please share! donmoynihan.substack.com/p/here-is-a-...

Destroying the agency that brought us the internet, the SuperCollider and modern telescopes. Heading into the dark ages here

Trump just fired Dr. Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress. A complete tragedy and a scandal.

Exclusive: National Science Foundation staff were told today that the agency’s 37 divisions—across all eight directorates—are being abolished and the number of programs within those divisions will be drastically reduced.

The great Joe Nye: “It’s not just a question of whose army wins,” he argued, “it’s also about whose story wins” www.washingtonpost.com/obituaries/2...

Levitsky, Way, and Ziblatt: "No One Has Ever Defeated Autocracy From the Sidelines" www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/o... (gift link) Key points: 1. We are now living under competitive authoritarianism. 2. We need ALL of civil society to resist the temptation of appeasement and defend democracy.

I talked with Danielle Allen about her piece in @theatlantic.com on a new social contract for higher education and America. Lot of interesting ideas explored in my new column. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Joe Nye hired me in my first academic job. He was a model of the gifted scholar and the committed public servant. And less publicly visible was his unfailing graciousness to junior scholars across the generations, including me. His leadership was a shining example for others. Rest in peace Joe.

While everyone gets mad about college students using AI...I am extremely curious about this very vague survey cite in the NY Mag story

"Someone can hold false beliefs without consuming misinformation, and the prevalence of misinformation does not necessarily indicate the prevalence of its effects"

Appeasement, as Churchill warned, is like feeding a crocodile and hoping to be the last one eaten. A must read on resisting authoritarianism from my colleagues Levitsky and Ziblatt (and Lucian Way). www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/o...

Delighted that this great conversation with @scottepage.bsky.social where we discuss his profound work on the efficiency benefits of diversity, the use of complexity to understand systemic inequalities, among many topics.

100% this. And moreover expanding and diversifying the scientific workforce is literally NSF’s Congressionally mandated mission. #NSF has been, overall, an extraordinarily powerful engine of advancement for science and society for 75 years
