Elizabeth Harbottle was known as the ‘grey lady’ of Wyke Hall. The family lands covered some 215 acres just outside Sandal near Wakefield, and when Elizabeth was born in 1818, it was into a world of genteel aristocracy that was soon to be swept away by a new wealth of industry and commerce.

Yesterday completely by chance I found myself at a delightful exhibition — “The Wonderful World of the Ladybird Book Artists”. A number of the natural history titles I own, but I now realise there’s not one of these books I would not read; the cover illustrations are just so charming & inviting.
