I don't think this is true. I think they both deeply believe in a god- or historic- duty to 'save' their country by exterminating others. There's no need to assume they are crass.

Astonishing. I recall as a child the switch around 76 to unleaded, in Canada, and was amazed to see it again when I came to the UK in 98. But whale oil as transmission fluid!

Yes the Iranian regime is "brittle" in that, when I was there in 2008, its popular support is so low, only party members favour it, so any other party coming to power would be accepted. Inflation since then will not have improved people's tempers. They'd like to be a normal country.
