In the spring of 2008, I feared America was on the verge of war with Iran — and, believing that it’s good style to get to know people before you bomb them, I made “Rick Steves’ Iran,” a one-hour special that could (and would) only debut on PBS. Sadly, this special has become pertinent again today.

ICE just arrested Brad Lander, the NYC Comptroller and one of the leading candidates for Mayor, without grounds. He was conducting routine immigration court work, escorting individuals from hearings. He asked ICE for their warrant - well within his legal rights. This is political intimidation.

It’s time for Republican Senators to speak up and support an independent investigation into what happened to Senator Padilla—and it’s time for Kristi Noem to resign.

Padilla: If this is how DHS responds to a senator with a question you can only imagine what they're doing to farm workers, to cooks, to day laborers out in the Los Angeles community and throughout California.

I'm on my way to the Senate floor to talk about the assault on my colleague, Senator Alex Padilla. This is a horrifying moment in our nation’s history.

Glad to see the QA on Cyberpunk 2077 is as strong as ever

real bummer finding out that literally everything was on the honor system this whole time

It's amazing to watch a major tech company rebuild the Windows Vista design language and try to sell it as a major innovation #wwdc

Politics is more clear when you remember that the "waste" in "government waste" is the profit that some rich asshole isn't making off labor in the public sector whose only purpose is the common good.

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

I see it. I have lived it. 83 years ago, the U.S. government turned upon a group of its own citizens and residents and sent them to internment camps without due process. I was there among them. American fascism is back. It is here. It is now.

I just landed in San Salvador a little while ago, and I look forward to meeting with the team at the U.S. embassy to discuss the release of Mr. Abrego Garcia. I also hope to meet with Salvadoran officials and with Kilmar himself. He was illegally abducted and needs to come home.

In any functioning democracy the elimination of an extant department that protects children from lead poisoning would be a game ender for the entire administration under which it occurred. I’ll expect a strong statement from Chuck Schumer and some fundraising texts.

An innocent man, picked up by “mistake,” must not be allowed to rot in an El Salvadorian jail. Mr. President. Obey the courts. Obey our Constitution. Bring him home immediately.

i'm feeling sad, what should i buy?

Spoiler: It is absolutely market manipulation

No lawmaker in Congress should be able to own, buy, and sell individual stocks. We need to ban congressional stock trading—and I've got a bill for that.

This is really unfair to everyone who just voted for him for the racism.

The administration is a perfect storm of dumb people who enjoy inflicting pain and are addicted to psychotic cruelty and quadrupling down. It ends in total ruin if you don't impeach him.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die. Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Boycotting the grocery store until they start buying an equivalent volume of groceries from me

Hope it was worth it to stop a few of us from peeing.

Trump was specifically elected to make coastal knowledge workers feel the pain that rural manufacturing towns have been dealing with for the last few decades. I wouldn't be surprised if his supporters are perfectly happy with how he's handled the economy so far.

It’s weird* that the president can just decide to put a huge tax on American businesses without congress even being a little bit involved. * very unconstitutional

While the economy melts down, I'm still over here remembering how Sergey Brin asked employees to work a minimum 60 hours per week. I have some thoughts: www.dchristopher.me/notes/minimu...
