The Right to Be Hostile - Boston Review

Israel has grown politically bright red while American Jews remain proudly deep blue. Two-thirds of Israelis questioned told pollsters they preferred Donald Trump over Kamala Harris; the exact opposite held true among American Jews.

We played the long game. Easier than I thought.

Gates's recent ire stems from Musk's role in DOGE and the department's abrupt shuttering of the US Agency for International Development, the main conduit for US aid.

Read my latest:

Acting Columbia president Claire Shipman authorized NYPD to enter Butler Library and arrest around 75 pro-Palestinian protestors who had occupied the main reading room, according to the Columbia Spectator. Two protestors were taken out on stretchers. Two officers were also injured, per Shipman.

At a 24-hour vigil to protect Medicaid on the National Mall in Washington, DC, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) was to the point: to protect democracy, Medicaid has to be protected, too.

What's happening with these grants is much more complicated and mostly unknown. None of the NIH have been officially cancelled. The NIH was just ordered to stop paying. They got the Unis to enforce silence on their own campuses because they thought they were "negotiating" and cld get the funds back.

I was going to write a book on this topic (airborne spread of COVID-19 and why it was overlooked) but never found the space. @carlzimmer.com did a far better job than I’d have done. Great interview, @erictopol.bsky.social, and great book!

i am currently reading jacob heilbrunn’s great book on the American right’s love affair with foreign dictators, and one thing that is very apparent is that these people have always celebrated racism. no backlash required.

“I had hoped that travel would make my world seem larger, but I felt like it had clipped my wings.” The Palestinian writer @mosababutoha.bsky.social reflects on his experiences with the T.S.A. since October 7th—and a strange visit from the F.B.I.

More firings at the National Cancer Institute, including the Cancer Information Service, “which provides answers to doctors and patients about cancer, and updates to databases summarizing cancer information for healthcare providers”. I mean who needs it, right? www.cbsnews.com/news/nih-lay...

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Because no one spends as much on science as the US does, destroying NIH, NSF, NOAA, NASA, EPA, USDA, USGS, etc. is leading to a brain drain, but it's not to other countries but rather from science. This senseless destruction of US science will hurt the US and the world for a very long time.

for the people in the driver's seat of the right wing cultural movement, an end to "DEI" always meant doing things like sending free money to a white lady who called a child the n word. sorry if you thought it was about a slightly annoying HR webinar you once had to watch or whatever.

The Hidden Struggle of John Fetterman

@nytimes is blogging the 2026 budget proposal. Warnock: I hear people attack poor people and act like it’s a crime to be poor, rather than to recognize it’s criminal for so many people to be poor. They do all of this in the name of Jesus… Jesus is the biggest victim of identity theft in the United States

👇💙 absolutely brilliant and beautiful.

When he was just a sleazy real estate grifter, Trump's compulsive lying was merely annoying. Now, as POTUS, he has an army of propagandists behind him insisting that he is American history’s great truth-teller. It’s sick and it’s dangerous.

shoutout to every credulous pundit who said that this piece was hysterical

A colleague at Stanford’s business school used The Stanford Daily to argue—poorly—against DEI. The piece was riddled with historical errors and left one searching for fact, so I broke my public writing hiatus to respond. I hope you’ll read and share the piece. stanforddaily.com/2025/04/22/w...

Turns out you can shape the agenda with dramatic action and maybe even shift public opinion. Crazy.

Friendly reminder. In the United States, criminals are entitled to due process. Even if you pay hush money rig an election, steal top secret documents, or incite a mob to overthrow the government; no matter how egregious your crimes, you’re entitled to due process.

"By slashing teams that gather critical data, the administration has left the federal government with no way of understanding if policies are working — and created a black hole of information whose consequences could ripple out for decades." #Democracy www.propublica.org/article/trum...

On Teaching Adam Smith in Ohio – Corey Robin

News Analysis | Trump realized that other countries, unlike the US, still had civil servants who could actually administer tariffs.

I’ve been reporting on health insurance denials for more than a year. Last fall, I stumbled across a lawsuit that, with interviews, revealed one insurers’ playbook of secret lists, special deals and lowball payments. 👇
