I will be recruiting new postdocs with start dates end 2025 - early 2026. If you'd like to work at the Pasteur Institute in the heart of Paris surrounded by amazing scientists, reach out to discuss possible projects on SynBio / Bacterial Immunity!

One of the most useful tables for a chemist to remember, and it illustrates why computational chemistry and drug design are hard: even a 1.3 kcal/mol error in calculating an equilibrium conformational or binding free energy difference will essential translate into a 90:10 estimation error

Please repost and amplify the reach.

The future is a web of branching paths, and each choice opens up new possibilities as it closes others. This is as true for a civilization as it is for an individual. The more our collective intelligence can inform each choice, the better our chances of finding paths through to a beautiful future.

🚀 #ShareYourCloning rebrands to #OpenCloning 🧫 An Open Source web application to plan and document molecular cloning 🧬 and genome engineering 🦠. Latest version adds support for WekWikGene 🔍 as a plasmid source, and UI improvements. 👉 Check it out here: opencloning.org 🌍

The lack of high-quality annotated #datasets is hampering applications of #AI in Optical #Microscopy. Let's change this together! I'm honored to be serving as the collection's Guest Editor. More in: go.nature.com/4hyDnNK 🧪 @natureportfolio.nature.com @casusscience.bsky.social @hzdr.bsky.social

23andMe is going under. Californians have the right to delete their genetic data before it's turned over to next party buying the assets. If you have a 23andMe account, go log in to download whatever reports you want to save, then follow these instructions to delete your data.

I've been noticing that despite having a larger follower count here (probably due to starter packs) and being followed by many of the same people here as Twitter/X, I still have more engagement over there. What do we need to do to boost the algo here?

Institutions “encouraging their PIs to seek alternate funding” do not seem to understand we’ve been doing that for two bloody decades. It’s not like we’ve been leaving stones unturned and can now find a ton of undisturbed grubs just waiting to feed us!

Honestly yeah

I remember that time in the 50s, growing up in Germany, very well. The idea of eliminating the mandate for the successful polio vaccination is mindboggling. In this day and age it would amount to homicide.

Sadly, it’s a good time to once again share this amazing infographic that we ran at @science.org more than 7 years ago 🧪 #IDsky www.science.org/content/arti...

In addition to applied statistics, I have another repository on #DataVisualization: "quick data vis" (github.com/cxli233/Quic...). It used to be under "Online_R_learning" but now it has its own repository on GitHub. I have used this content to teach 1st year grad students for 3 years.

I would love to set something like that up, but it's very challenging in my environment 😕 Instead I have awesome collaborators/friends I work with very closely

How much of computational biology is doing detective work trying to figure out why some program won't run?

Here is a thread showcasing my GitHub repositories: 1) Friends Don't Let Friends Make Bad Graphs. An opinionated essay on good and bad graphs. My popular one by a long shot with 6.4k stars and 248 forks. github.com/cxli233/Frie...

Wow. This is cool.

Interested in viruses? We've just advertised two fully-funded PhD projects - if you'd like to know more please e-mail me (link in advert) for a chat. Project 1: 'Virology in the dark' - use advanced microscopy to see viruses getting up to things they've never done before t.co/e3ZL0XyiF9 (1/3)

Management principles but translatable to academia. Could be useful for PIs. My favourite part: "Even the best performers need structure and guidance - a coach. Without coaching, high performers can meet all sorts of suboptimal fates." substack.com/@staysaasy/p...

I found some good quality advice. "All code is a liability. Undeployed code is the grim reaper of liabilities." zarar.dev/good-softwar...

The #1 piece of advice I give to people considering applying for NSF funding... *** Talk to a Program Director *** We are not scary. I promise. Our job is to help figure out the best place for your research to be reviewed at NSF. If you email & don't hear back within a week, please email again!

When applying to NSF for funding, each senior personnel has to provide a “Collaborators and Other Affiliations” (COA) form, which can be quite onerous. A couple of years ago I created a tool bit.ly/NSF_COA for automating this, and recently hardened it. I hope it is of use, and feedback is welcome! 🧪
