_Ice Cream Lover_ (2019): a fairly straightforward romance with some genuine LOLs along the way. We know where this ride ends, and the leads are good company. If you want an escape that's not overly dramatic, this could be a good choice. Passes the Bechdel Test. @jackielaubooks.bsky.social

Caradhras not looking so bad right now.

People who ban books have never been the good guys, but what's more they show their insecurity: they know their beliefs cannot prevail in a free marketplace of ideas. (If you're threatened by _Calvin and Hobbes_, you need a whole lot of help.) pen.org/magic-tree-h...

We have incompetent and unqualified people in important positions, such as terrorism prevention and secretary of defense, and the President is destroying our alliances, but as long as we stay out of needless wars. Oh, we've gutted out antiterrorism forces AND we're bombing Iran? That's not good.

I have not yet seen #Elio, but I approve of it anyway because in the future I will know the answer to crossword puzzle clues such as '2025 Pixar movie'.

#Juneteenth, and remembering the evil of slavery, matter. Not to attack people from the past for what they did wrong, but to learn from those who made things better. The best way to honor the heritage of our ancestors is to follow their example and work to set right the problems of our time.

Trump shows his weakness in thinking Kim Jong-Un is strong, and how he wants the USA to be as weak as North Korea is. I'd rather live in a democratic superpower than third-world dictatorship. It bothers me that Trump wants the opposite.

When we tolerate violent and hateful speech about members of political parties, and vote for people who speak that way, we encourage violent lunatics to do things like this. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

_Brain on Fire_ (2016): Dramatised true story of a woman who suffered, along with her family and friends, when her brain stopped working. End credits have pictures of the people in the movie and describe her efforts to help others with the same disease. Passes the Bechdel Test. I liked this movie.

When I worked at the NIH in the 1980s I was once in the same room as C. Everett Koop.
