In the town square at Saarland‘s best gelateria after a long day at work - summer is almost here! 😎🍹

This CfP for a special issue of Corpus Pragmatics (ed. by P. Madella) looks really great. It promises to make a significant contribution to a more linguistically-informed approach to deception (detection) - something much needed!

ABC Bergen closes after three days and over 90 presentations in Speilsalen (Mirror Hall). Great to have met so many colleagues & friends! I heard wonderful talks and was inspired by new ideas (here symbolized by the Arctic Starflower found on NHH‘s campus)📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

Can AI be used to optimize company responses in webcare? 🤖💌 Spoiler: Well, kind of… Find out more in my presentation during the afternoon AI session at ABC Bergen! 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

„What you did well…“ Anna Krispin (Zuyd UAS Maastricht) discusses AI-generated presentation feedback 🤖🎥 AI focuses more on praise, feedback on text is more specific than on video & AI may make up content. Takeaway: Feedback quality depends on effective prompting 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

“You can use a hammer with screws, but you won’t like the result” Katrin Büttgen (Zuyd UAS Maastricht) talks about how to assess AI feedback in writing classes 🤖📝 Students have concerns about trust, overload & control & see AI as a tool with limitations - but will keep using it! 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

The last conference day of ABC Bergen starts with a session on teaching business communication, with Sylvie De Cock (UCLouvain) discussing how to use data-driven learning (e.g. through lexical bundles in press releases) to train genre awareness and writing 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

Language is actually more than „just language“! Rebecca Piekkari @aalto.fi looks at language-sensitive research from an international business perspective - from geographical focus to hybridity, company terminology, communities of practice & cultures. Next: discourse & narrative? 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

Ursula Lutzky (WU Vienna), Andrew Kehoe & Matt Gee (Birmingham City U) analyze how emojis are used in webcare: Relationship management😍😔🙃 customer engagement 🚨🔥👀 brand identity 👑🌶️🌮 marketing 🦉🤡🍻 on-brand hearts 💚💛🩵 Customers are inventive, too, e.g. with criticism 🐴💩 Great stuff! 😊🎓📚 #ABCBergen2025

Being nice wins! ⭐️ Putting up a friendly face when answering online reviews helps your business win customers, Jens Seiffert-Brockmann (WU Vienna) finds, even with very negative reviews. Being impolite may be a niche strategy at best 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

Melina De Dijn & Dorien Van De Mieroop (KU Leuven) present their research on ageism in job interviews from a discourse analysis perspective. Age can function as an argumentative resource, but is risky. Takeaway: Training recruiters, empowering candidates, raising awareness 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

Day 2 of ABC Bergen - spoilt for choice with four parallel sessions! For me, it’s workplace communication, with Melina De Dijn (KU Leuven on ageism in job interviews, Heidi Willers (Arizona U) on inclusivity & Daniel Keays (Saint Mary‘s) on disclosure 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

Day 1 of the conference ends with a welcome reception by the City of Bergen in the beautiful Permanenten building of the Kode Museum of Arts and Crafts 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

Last keynote of the day 📚🎓 Sunniva Whittaker (U of Agder) discusses the gap between communication and management studies via Gibbon’s (1994) mode 1 (academic, homogenous) and 2 (applied, transient) knowledge production. Takeaway: More communication-focused business studies programs? #ABCBergen2025

‚A rolled up their sleeves & dived deep‘ 🤿 ‚B was the driving force behind the project’ 🏎️ ‚C is a tree shaker’ 🌳 Sylvia Jaworska (Reading) examines how the language of performance reviews influences promotion. Yes, metaphors matter! (but a gender gap persists) #ABCBergen2025

Noon break at ABC Bergen - Taking time to admire (and enjoy) NHH‘s beautiful campus during a sunny spell 🌲⛰️ #ABCBergen2025

Sofie Decock (Ghent U) finds that gender-neutral pronouns in Dutch don’t hinder text comprehensibility but, potentially, appreciation. Cueing doesn’t help (rather hinder). Companies may consider strategic introduction of die-hen-hun to facilitate habituation 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

Afternoon sessions at ABC! Sofie Decock (U Gent) talks about the effect of Dutch gender-neutral pronouns on perceived text quality, Benjamin Ale-Ebrahim (Indiana U) about multilingual corporate settings, and Sylvia Jaworska (Aston U) about performance reviews 📚🎓 #ABCBergen2025

Walter Giordano presents his analysis on sustainability in CEO letters using „TALL - Text Analysis for All“ a new analysis tool created at University of Naples & freely available for research. Looking forward to trying it out! 📚🎓 Link: k-synth.com/tall/ #ABCBergen2025

In her talk on sustainable brand identities at ABC Bergen, Marie-Louise Brunner examines food companies’ Instagram accounts. These best practices can create awareness of the sustainability topics in general, but also serve as templates for companies in other sectors ♻️📚 #ABCBergen2025

Walk through Bergen‘s former Hansa quarter Bryggen on the eve of the the Association for Business Communication conference while Europe’s rainiest city lives up to its name 🌧️🇳🇴 #ABCBergen2025

Tomorrow it‘s off to Norway for the Association for Business Communication conference to present my research on AI in company webcare 🤖📚 It will be great to meet the ABC crowd again at NHH Bergen! Even if the weather may not be as sunny as last time… #ABCBergen2025 🌂

As every year, May ends with the city festival in our old town. The morning sun finds Schloss square still calm and ready for the crowds 😎🍻

The rains have sprung the late May flowers in the garden: buttercups, speedwell, hawksbeard, wild chives. In German: Hahnenfuß (‘rooster’s foot’), Ehrenpreis (‘bringer of victory’), Vogeldistel ‘(bird thistle’), Schnittlauch (‘cutting leek’), all hinting at use or association 🌼

#ADDA5 ended with a very tempting invitation to #ADDA6 in Brno 🤩

Next up: the #ADDA5 hot dog eating contest #CarnivalesqueConsumption #LanguageAndFood

Last day of #ADDA5: #dcmjournal co-EiC Jan Chovanec on replatforming of TV cooking shows; social media editor @laurafilardollamas.bsky.social on Goncharov CoP on Tumblr; and EB member @jaimackenzie.bsky.social on #dadlife on instagram

Took a bit of a break from posting on Bluesky today but have now ofc joined Jan Chovanec's talk on food & the reclamation of authenticity in regional Czech cooking shows. Close entanglements of cooking & nostalgia, focus on honesty & the "nonna phenomenon". Fortunately right before lunch ;) #ADDA5

Amazing work by @nounfraze.bsky.social, Dawn Archer & Paul Archer on how children think about digital influencers and who influences them on- and offline #ADDA5

how do 'medical gurus' construct persuasive discourse in digital spaces: Cecilia Lazzaretti on the 'medical medium', with reference to anti-vegan activists and mortality experts. Discovering a completely new world at #ADDA5

We've all seen (work on) restaurant reviews, but Melike Akay's research focuses on reviews of quite a different service: hospitals 🏥 I do certainly check the reviews before going to a new doctor's office but then often you don't have a choice in the German system... #ADDA5

Eva Triebl continues with a study on venting on Reddit where she takes a closer look at moments of metapragmatic crisis - instances where we find discursive struggle over who can participate in online interactions, how and under what conditions #ADDA5

Morana Lukač & Stacey Copeland kick off the panel on mental health discourses online with an analysis of podcasts on narcissistic abuse and how therapeutic intimacy functions as a product #ADDA5

Schneider identified "helper tropes" in interviews with & publications by LLM designers: helping people as the goal, "no language left behind" . A similar framing to what was also used in contexts of colonization (full circle with the idea that language functions as a companion for empire). #ADDA5

May highlight in the old town: Roses and Crafts Market, where, now that the last frost days are (hopefully) over, you can stock your garden with the first roses 🪴🌹 And some bric-à-brac, if you fancy it… I opted for ice cream (lemon and woodruff) instead 😋🍦

Pizza with ham 🥓 and pineapple🍍 This variant of the Italian signature dish is popular in Northern Europe, also in Germany; here in the delicious version by my favourite Italian restaurant. Not so much in Italy, where it may be classified as „not a pizza at all“ 🍕 Thoughts? 😋
