this reminds me of a similarly incredible Terry Pratchett story - he switched publishers in Germany because his original publisher inserted soup ads directly into the text of his books and wouldn’t promise to stop doing it

For fuckssake, YouTube. Can you *please* stop trying to make Shorts a thing. Now they’re appearing at the top of subscription pages, meaning I can’t just scroll through my subs to each channel’s latest *proper* videos. Plus your shitty algorithm keeps destroying great channels. Ugh.

I built what might be the world’s greatest desk fan. ESP32 running WLED. Soldered-together PWM controller for the DC-only fan. Usermod to link the rotary encoder to fan speed. 12V USB-C with a buck converter to give 5V to the ESP and LEDs. WiFi to a web interface to control the LED patterns.

This Orpington boy’s wondering how in the ever loving fuck Bromley made this list. I mean… *Bromley* for crying out loud. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

@confuseddude.bsky.social catching up with this week’s VODs and I’m *cackling* that “Welcome to the thickness” became a thing.

HURRY UP PLEASE ITS TIME

The more time passes the more the Cass Report looks like me showing up at the Francis Crick Institute with a ball of plasticine on a lolly stick pushed in to some oasis foam that I've sprayed gold and saying "BEHOLD! THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE!"

Wow… look at this! 35% of the UK’s electricity is being supplied by solar right now. And yes, it’s a sunny day, but we *already* have the solar capacity for this to happen. And that’s in addition to all the solar that individual homes have, reducing grid demand. ☀️☀️☀️

On a whim, I bought the Odyssey expansion for Elite: Dangerous and played through the on-foot training mission. Holy crap, I really need to get back into this game.

Great to see @lindymorrison.bsky.social back where she belongs, doing what she loves, creating music and living life. And the SnarskiCircusLindyBand are always a good time for the audience too. Good on you, Lindy. www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09...

Kudos to the girl sat in front of me who dashed into the loo as soon as she got on the train, then emerged having clearly just done a line of coke. Whatever gets you through a Thursday I guess.

Goes back in time to 1990s Chris and tells him, “You know Huey from the Fun Lovin’ Criminals? In the future, he’s a Saturday-morning DJ on BBC 6 Music, has read children’s bedtime stories on CBeebies and hosted a bunch of BBC TV stuff. He’s something of a national treasure.” Past me: “Um, ok?”

I seem to have bought the world’s chonkiest power strip.

Look at this adorable bastard.

“There’s a lid for every pot.” *looks through cookware* “No. No there isn’t.”

Some of the immensly talented people that worked at Acorn Computers and ARM. Without them there wouldn't have been a BBC Micro, Archimedes or the ARM processor. The world would have been a very different place for many of us, myself included. Thank you!

It’s Monday. Have a little The Go! Team as a treat. youtu.be/evwkrcL8P6g?...

Can we have some Bruce Boxleitner? No, we’ve got Bruce Boxleitner at home. Bruce Boxleitner at home:

Watching Handmaid’s Tale. Saw that US flag with just the two stars — Alaska and Hawaii. Thought to myself… so even then, after all that… Puerto Rico STILL hasn’t been made a state! What the hell.

This is a great idea. Glad they’re not planning to convert all 115,000 postboxes since I’d hate to not have the wonderful guerilla art that is knitted postbox toppers.

Got an Apple IIc imported from the US for reasonable money (they’re rare as hens’ teeth over here). One of my modest dream computers! Serviced and cleaned it up, then after finding a working TEAC drive, I greaseweazle’d Fat City to a 5.25” floppy and went full @adriansdigitalbasement.com on it!

An Acorn Archimedes graphics demo running on an 8MHz ARM 2 system - 1987. Written in BBC BASIC using various OS draw primitive routines. No GPU or hardware blitter to help do any of the rendering. This was often used at computer shows or at Acorn retailers to demonstrate the machines capablities.

if i am going to survive the post economy world i am going to have to finally knit a second sock. i have no other skills. imagine deriving maxwell's equations as a possible trade for shampoo.

Do I feel awful because of the apocalypse, the pollen, sudden onset of a rare fatal disease or is it just that I am 46 and didn't sleep great last night

Not being allowed to hand water to people in line to vote no matter who they are voting for, while being allowed to hand people million dollar checks to get their vote, is the most American thing ever.
