I shift between current events anxiety, theme parks, theater, ramblings, education, etc. often and without warning. More politics than intended (sorry!).

Seen this going around but I’m Reposting it with the full alt text bc everyone deserves to read this glorious reply from Boy George

Fucking hell: “Minnesota state senator John Hoffman in Champlin and Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park were reportedly shot in their homes by a gunman impersonating a police officer.”

Absolutely horrifying news out of Minnesota. Political violence and assassination attempts against elected officials has no place in our society. kstp.com/kstp-news/to...

I’m very out of touch this week out of necessity but I hope everyone protesting today knows to write a lawyer’s and a friend’s number on their body in sharpie and to wear sunglasses and to leave your phones at home/turn off all location services and not share photos of other protesters

These are unspeakably dark and horrific times. Going out today and standing with people who are demanding that this country become better than it is feels so small. But also, and crucially, it feels better than doing nothing.

Especially if you're on the fence about it, protest today. Fascism is isolating and lonely. Its very goal is to make you feel like you're the only person unwilling to accept a cult of personality. On days like today you fully realize there are more of us than there are them. You will feel better.

The point is to create a world in which the authoritarians can simultaneously inhabit a position of victim and abuser, creating an imagined threat of persecution and violence in order to persecute and carry out violence. This is how this always works. We cannot allow this to continue.

What happened in Minnesota is a direct consequence of the violent way that Trump talks about his political opponents.

George Washington hated military parades.

Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated last night, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House in the 2023-2024 session, when Democrats ran the state government. That means she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that period—an important legacy. Brief 🧵.

The Minnesota assassinations, the attempted arson at Governor Shapiro's home, and the violent arrest of Senator Padilla are all straight out of the Jim Crow terrorism playbook. Same goes with cops aiming for journalists covering the ICE protests. None of these are new tactics, just a new iteration.

Obama and Biden are not responsible for the actions of the GOP or outbursts of right-wing violence. They are, however, fully implicated in the failure to understand what the American right was becoming and accepting the consequences for addressing it honestly and forcefully.

"defund the police" was so obviously correct. I really don't care if it doesn't poll well. it's like telling me that I should stop saying I like vaccines if they stopped polling well.

I think that the MSM is terrified of being targeted by the Right. It shows in their coverage. They aren't scared of the Lefts and that too shows in their coverage.

Framing like this should be considered a form of misinformation. Antisemitism in America in 2025 overwhelmingly emanates from the political right. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/14/o...

it’s quite strange that wednesday ICE employees got an email saying it’s open season on warrantless arrests, as i reported (ostensibly to meet daily quotas) and then another email thursday saying heyyyy pump the breaks on arresting certain types of workers. somebody’s lying or incompetent or both.

If we get back to talking about the "Big Beautiful Bill" after the war and fascism stuff, the Congressional Budget Office OVERESTIMATED growth after Trump's last tax cut cepr.net/publications...

My latest scoop: ICE has rescinded its accountability policy for warrantless arrests, giving agents “free license to make any arrest,” per one lawyer representing victims. It follows @theguardian.com exclusive that the agency was told to “push the envelope” to meet Trump’s 3k arrest quota.

FYI: I’m flying domestic and *do not* have a Real ID and they asked me for another form of identification. Make sure to bring a backup ID (I had my passport.)

Called it: they’re going to try cracking down on audits and debt collection for the poorest

Damn if only we had some kind of independent institution whose role was to assess the claims of political actors on the merits. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Trump’s dream of a U.S. factory boom via tariffs ignores a key issue: labor. His plan assumes China’s “nimble-fingered” workers can be replaced by U.S. robots and engineers—but by 2023, China already had over 50% more robots per manufacturing worker than the U.S. Read more in today’s Chartbook!

hopelessness is their weapon, not ours

1. Trans troops are now being separated from their jobs, and we have learned what discharge code they are being given: "JDK," a code that was used to remove communists and gay people, and can be seen as a "black mark" on their service. The latest from S. Baum. Subscribe to support our journalism.

With federal changes to vaccine policy & recommendations underway, here's our overview of insurance coverage requirements for vaccines by payer, as linked to ACIP/CDC. As we show, federal changes mean consumers could lose access to free vaccines. www.kff.org/other/issue-...

It's called hungover

ICE abducted Moises Sotelo today. He is a trusted vineyard management business owner from Newburg, Oregon, who has been in the US since 1994. He has a wife, three children, and five grandchildren who need him to be returned safely to them.

Wait since when are we doing this

The countries largest gender clinic with 3000 patients is complying in advance and shutting down. They treat up to age 25 so trans adults will lose access as well. www.latimes.com/california/s...

Accounts are circulating protest advice that’s going to get people maimed or killed I made a primer going over what to expect, how to navigate the environment safely, your rights, what to bring / not bring, and how to be prepared should things get ugly jaredyatessexton.substack.com/p/protest-pr...

there’s got to be some kind of statute of limitations on this crap. I get moral hazard, I get all of that, it’s just completely insane to say that this guy who built an American life for 30 years isn’t American.

It would be great if America’s pundits would pause this entire genre. “Burning down my house means I don’t need to take out the trash!” Your cleverness is not winning the day right now.

NEW: 12 masked armed men try to enter a homeless shelter without saying who they are. ICE agents park outside an elementary school, sparking fear and a car accident. Local police respond to a call about a possible assault, only to find ICE. Inside one day on LI: theintercept.com/2025/06/13/i...

I would simply stop cooperating with Republicans on anything in the Senate until they hold the Trump regime accountable for these and many other actions.

Sourcing the dispute to Padilla even when the video proves Padilla is right is an explicit endorsement of the White House's credibility by a news organization

Should be noted how many sheriffs around the country have spent their careers absolutely champing at the bit to engage in systematic violence against the populace. We’ve seen and heard this for years, so don’t be surprised if it comes to pass. www.cnn.com/2025/06/13/u...

The group organizing Trump's big parade and America's 250th anniversary celebration is making the events into campaign campaign-like rallies and hiring lot of Trump cronies, including people who profited by staging the January 6 Ellipse rally. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Liberals once again being blamed for the actions of a Republican administration, even when the liberals’ behavior came second in the order of events.

Amazing to me that this country has managed to corner the market on the absolute dumbest mother fuckers on earth. Good job, America, good effort.

Jacqueline Sweet is a damn good reporter and you should hire her.
