There was an old tweet that stuck with me: "If you can easily walk to the coffee shop but your barista has a one hour commute, you don't live in a walkable 15 minute city; you live in a theme park"

Remember when a 30% tariff rate on all Chinese goods would have caused a panic and not a relief? Could someone please close the Overton window on the space ship before all the air gets out?

Funny aside: At this point the US and China are still yet to agree on who called who to suggest they talk in Geneva.

We’re going to transport the president in a standard 747 instead of a VC-25 now? Either the changes in the VC-25 are there for a reason and are necessary, or the VC-25B program is a real waste of money. I’m open to either outcome being true, but both can’t be false.

Remember when 10% global tariff was the absolutely worst-case scenario? During the campaign markets assumed it was too crazy even for Trump thehill.com/business/529...

Consumer retail has that coyote after it’s gone over the cliff, but before it drops kind of feel to it.

My girlfriend talking about someone who loads their shotgun: “The first shot is salt shot. There’s another word for that, what is that called?” Me: “… assault?”

Voters literally just approved the addition of gender identity protections (which opposition framed entirely as about trans athletes) to the NY Consitution 62-37, a higher margin than the state gave to Kamala Harris

Trans people could have told you these idiots thought the world should have fewer dolls well before the trade war.

Quick decoder ring for the current administration: government departments and divisions are named for what their leadership is against.

It's always a little surprising realizing that no one knows what I'm doing better than I do, but here's hoping we don't keep it that way.

When the hardware designer capitalizes ILLEGAL in a specification it's important to translate this to its proper meaning, which is: "try me"

What the political pundits handwringing about how believing people have rights might be going too far if those people are trans won’t tell you… is that the actions in this area are even less popular than the thoughtless tariff policies driving the economy off the cliff. From voters of both parties.

The Papal conclave is expected to start between the 6th and 12th of May. Eurovision is between the 13th and 17th of May. Social media is about to get very confusing.

Seeing another story of the dollar being down, popping open my bank account with a mix of currencies to check and seeing the last three numbers of the total in USD basically being the same as they were this weekend. And then the slow horror when I realize the two to the left of them aren’t.

I don’t think we needed the rise of a fascist government to realize that people who work at Palantir and similar firms are craven sellouts of our profession and should quit, but I’m glad more people can see this for what it is now.

How much more perfect can a victim be than someone who is innocent? In our country under the rule of law, even legitimately guilty people deserve due process—and must be given it. And part of due process is: anyone who has not been found guilty, is innocent until proven otherwise.

A small bit of local quirky tariff impacts: many industrial art groups gearing up for “the summer season” have signed contracts to build and bring art pieces already—with budgets mostly made prior to the tariffs.

You gotta hand it to the fascists, this is a bold move to deregulate the 54-72mhz and 72-108mhz spectrums.

To be honest, I’m not sure I love this object on my desk.

I suppose it is worth noting that one of the ways I protect myself when there’s a fascist regime in power in the US is I typically have an active account denominated in foreign currency that can be directly withdrawn via IBAN or other non-US banking infrastructure.

This is driving me crazy too. Not long ago 10% universal tariffs were considered the worst-case scenario, something even Trump wasn’t crazy enough to impose. Now have those PLUS 125% tariffs on China. Together, these raise raise inflation by about as much as original “Liberation Day” tariffs did!

Biggest mistakes I'm seeing in early reporting (thread): 1. Tariffmageddon isn't over: Lotsa tariffs to account for, but the average tariff rate is only down around one quarter. So most of the pain of Liberation Day is still with us.

These folks know how to shift an Overton window. A global 10% tariff plus sector specific boosted rates and a 125% tariff on China would have sounded like a completely wild trade policy merely a week ago. Today the markets are knee jerk shooting up in pure relief it’s not even worse. For 90 days.
