June 15, 1920: Sam Sniderman was born in Toronto. He was the founder of the record shop chain Sam the Record Man. He was also a major promoter of Canadian music and helped develop the CANCON broadcast regulations. He also co-created the Juno Awards. He died in 2012.

Sam the Record Man was THE record store, anchoring an incredible stretch of stores just north of Yonge and Dundas. I have a t-shirt with a vintage photo of Sam's. Spent one of my first paychecks there on a handful of Kraftwerk LPs.

Who says minority governments can't get stuff done?

In 2005, Canada became the fourth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage. The process to get the landmark Act passed included calls for boycotts of Famous Players, lots of debates and speeches. This is the story. 🧵 1/14

On June 14, 1894, a choral performance of Handel's 'Messiah' was held at Massey Hall. This was the debut concert for the iconic hall. Massey Hall became one of the most important concert venues in Canada, and a National Historic Site. This is its story. 🧵 1/14

"no innovation until everything works" That hits home with #WGSL design and implementation. I like to say WGSL is deliberately conservative (complimentary) noisydecentgraphics.typepad.com/design/2025/...

I was at the same car dealership as Lawrence Gowan. I was getting my Saturn serviced, he was getting his Saab serviced. It was the late 90s. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrenc...

The funniest Usenet drama I witnessed was the repeated fights on ut.general: UTexas and UToronto students confusing each other about their respective local events then telling the other folks to get out of the group. Combatants failing to realize the spillage of packets going both ways.

I'd forgotten the multi-artist version of God Only Knows that was used to launch BBC Music 10 years ago. Brian Wilson was, fittingly, the only one to appears twice. (There's no other cultural organisation that could do anything as gloriously celebratory as this.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqLT...

The Salem Witch Trials may have been caused by rye bread. In 1692, after two young girls in Salem, Massachusetts exhibited severe convulsions and other strange symptoms, village doctor William Griggs diagnosed them as having been bewitched. 🧵⬇️

I love reading serious stories about guys who believe AGI is real, it feels like a bunch of millionaires plotting to find and capture Santa Claus

Did you know that you can just borrow an entire cello from the Toronto Public Library for free?? They have a musical instrument lending program. You can just walk into the library and walk out with an accordion. You can borrow a THEREMIN. www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/services/bor...

I have a new hero. This owl stole a child's hobby horse and flies around with it!

Toad played the piano, and he did not miss a note.

Strangely, I have absolutely no mental image of the Portland, Oregon downtown or skyline.

Zeno: okay team, we're half way through the sprint

The book proposal I'm currently working on is about a general theory of crises. So far my research is pointing toward the conclusion that the most important thing to do is to **understand that you are in a crisis** and that the normal rules which serve well in normal conditions may not apply.

Canadians were drinking 93pc less US wine yoy in April. Which is to say, good start

Y'know, it occurs to me that displaying the profile bio on the side of the screen when you're replying to someone would not be a terrible innovation, at least for the desktop version of bsky.

The Ontario case was by two guys named Mike. I saw them at a Cabbagetown festival once. Way to go Ontario!

June 10, 2003: Ontario legalized same-sex marriage after the Halpern v Canada ruling that declared defining marriage in heterosexual-only terms violated the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Ontario was the first jurisdiction in Canada and the third in the world to legalize same-sex marriage.

Remembering that time we catalogued a Collins Nature Guide to the seashore and found all the new insults we could ever need.
