You can't understand the behaviour of US elites - Democrats being too timid, Republicans debasing themselves, bureaucrats who behave like pushovers - without reference to the constant threat of political violence that has come with MAGA. Every day is January 6. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/06...

Obviously the news is still breaking but I'm slightly surprised two American politicians being shot for seemingly political reasons isn't a full stop-everything, dominate-the-timeline affair. Especially given, er, what we're probably all assuming the politics of the shooter are.

Yes surely he will take a moment to step away from the fascist military parade he organized in his owm honor to condemn the political assassinations he deliberately provoked.

This thread is a good explainer for what Melissa Hortman did for MN. She was an unusually fine leader.

Walz announces that Rep. Melissa Hortman is dead as a result of a "politically motivated assassination"

The most annoying response to this is "okay, she is joking and most of her fans get that she's joking, but I/other thoughtless people did not." If people have to sculpt all artistic choices to accommodate the dim, thoughtless, or humorless, art would become impossible. At least interesting art.

The taek away from this piece is not just that Pete Hegseth is very stupid and very paranoid. That we knew. It's that his stupidity and paranoia make it easy to turn him against the people most loyal to him, in favor of those clearly out for themselves. What a mess. nymag.com/intelligence...

As it was obvious they would. A huge waste of parents' money by lawyers who saw an easy payday.

Just heard this record in a restaurant. Still sounds futuristic 23 years later. Incredible piece of work, well done everybody youtu.be/P5rqNyulfsQ?...

🚨OUT NOW🚨 Rachel Reeves’ spending review is out – what’s in it and what do the panel think should have got more attention? Plus, Reform UK wants to bring the DOGE mentality to Britain. We explain why that’s a terrible idea. @samfr.bsky.social joins the panel! 👉 linktr.ee/ohgodwhatnow...

Proud to have Ian as a friend and colleague. Great stuff

Pear and cucumber make you angry, ripped AI lion man, grrr

A US Senator was thrown to the ground and handcuffed by federal agents, and then the DHS Secretary went on to say that they are taking control from the "socialist" local government. That is fascist, there is no other proper word for it than that. No euphemisms are necessary or warranted.

My most controversial opinion in 2025 is that some Little Britain sketches were actually fine

She's right. But the problem is she is not serious, and she is not on the centre-right. Indeed, she is so unserious that 'where on the political spectrum is Kemi Badenoch?' is actually a very difficult question to answer, it's like having to adjudicate 'how bacon is a table?'

The latest astroturf group to be treated by the press as a genuine campaign is "Don't Divide Us", which like the "LGB Alliance" has links to Tufton St, is pally with the so-called "free speech" right wing lobby and keeps its funding secret. Don't let yourself be taken in.

Something broke the journalists and now they can’t write anything that isn’t ‘What does this mean for Reform at the next election?’

There's something so weirdly amusing about libertarians serving no fucking useful social function in a time of dominant right-wing fascism other than arguing with teenagers in Che Guevara tee-shirts about the dangers of communism. Thanks, guys. We'll call when we need you.

A lot of people in AI sound fully demented. How will an LLM help us go to Mars in the next decade? I hope this is just a sales pitch and he doesn’t actually believe it

When I think of Brian Wilson I think how wonderful it was that he had the chance to come back from limbo with the 2002 Pet Sounds shows and then finally finish Smile. After a pretty hellish three decades, he got to see how loved he was. Those shows were celestial. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXZ_...

With all of the chatter today about the 50th anniversary of NASHVILLE's release, I may as well share the article I wrote about the movie for The Dissolve -- one of the pieces of writing I'm proudest of. thedissolve.com/features/exp...

And that's a wrap for season 7. We finish off with MLK's difficult final years, the reactions to his assassination and the uses and abuses of his legacy. Thanks for listening to this season. We're really proud of it. And don't forget the MLK playlist. open.spotify.com/playlist/549...

I genuinely think this particular aesthetic trend (Good Art Is Didactic And Also Assumes You Are Very Stupid) is a non-trivial source of anti-woke backlash, like unironically. It is really really annoying, and I think it has provided wedges by which anti-wokes can radicalise nerds.

Ah, I see someone Channel 4 made famous is fancying himself as a British Duterte.

A really good question, why *are* trans people so rarely given a voice in Irish media? Oh I see, that's not what you meant.
