Trump administration abruptly shifts focus of its mass deportation campaign, telling ICE officials to largely pause raids and arrests in the agricultural industry, hotels and restaurants. @haleaziz.bsky.social Zolan Kanno-Youngs www.nytimes.com/2025/06/13/u...

Protest works. But there was no way for Trump to keep his “mass deportation” promise without terrorizing non-criminals, traumatizing communities, and implementing cruelty. Anyone who thought otherwise was being foolish.

U.S. Marines have detained a civilian for the first time on the streets of Los Angeles, where President Trump ordered them to guard a federal building. The civilian, an Army veteran, said he was on his way to a VA office inside the building. www.reuters.com/world/us/us-...

it’s quite strange that wednesday ICE employees got an email saying it’s open season on warrantless arrests, as i reported (ostensibly to meet daily quotas) and then another email thursday saying heyyyy pump the breaks on arresting certain types of workers. somebody’s lying or incompetent or both.

Trump demonizes ordinary immigrants as MS-13 gang members - in reality he is funding the guy who is protecting MS-13 leaders

The big problem they have is they'll never find 12 million people to deport unless they deport people like this ... working in farms, hotels, eatries..LT care... service industry. And unless they deport LEGAL migrants. They misled voters into believing that 12 million criminals would be deported.

Highly clarifying piece from @nicholasgrossman.bsky.social charting the different ways Biden and Trump handled Israel and the Mideast, leading to where we are now. "We wouldn’t be here if not for Donald Trump." www.arcdigital.media/p/netanyahus...

Good insight in this thread about new reporting Marines have detained individuals in LA, which raises the question of Posse Comitatus Act violation.

Hey @smerconish.bsky.social you say the last time we had a serious debate on immigration was in 2015. How come you ignore the BIPARTISAN proposal led by REPUBLICAN SENATOR Lankford, and supported by President Biden. But blown up candidate Trump. www.cnn.com/2024/01/25/p...

Now that Trump has suspended deportation raids in the agriculture and hospitality industries, it's even worse that Dems failed to put their stamp on the right side of this debate. This dereliction could now let Trump get away with recasting his climbdown as sensible recalibration on his part. Awful.

This is a shocking development. Two leading Democratic lawmakers and their spouses in Minnesota were shot in their homes early this morning by a man possibly impersonating a police officer. This is the kind of violence we have been warning about. www.fox9.com/news/brookly...

A federal appeals court has declined to rehear Trump's challenge to the $5 million E. Jean Carroll civil judgment.

Wow. NYT is reporting that Trump is largely pausing deportation raids in agriculture and hospitality industries, suggesting he fears deportations are "hurting industries and constituencies that he does not want to lose." As I try to argue in this piece/thread, he's vulnerable here. Reset, Dems:

Trump has pledged to restore Confederate names to military bases, even though it would violate a statute passed by Congress. These names belong to traitors who led a rebellion against America. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/10/u...

BREAKING: Reuters has published video images of Marines carrying out the first known detention of civilian in Los Angeles

The White House has already previewed their legal argument in the military deployment at the border context; they argue it's not a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act because the troops are not arresting the person, merely temporarily detaining them for local law enforcement to arrive.

I spoke with the LA-area pastor who confronted masked men conducting an apparent immigration action on church property — men, she says, who said "the whole country is our property." DHS claims ICE wan't there — but I have video, and it may've still been a DHS team. religionnews.com/2025/06/13/i...

As is often the case, Texas has been a preview of this, being a little laboratory of autocracy for the past 10 years under Abbott/Patrick/Paxton, as @amykristinsanders.bsky.social and I wrote about here. www.statesman.com/story/opinio...

Fox hosts, parroting DHS, claimed Sen. Padilla "ran at,” "lunged at," and tried to “bum-rush” Kristi Noem. Video disproves their claims, showing Padilla standing calmly across the room asking his question as security grabs him.

Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus marched from the House floor to Senate Leader Thune and House Speaker Johnson’s offices after Sen. Alex Padilla was forcefully removed from a DHS news conference in Los Angeles.

If Trump’s mock-up is anything to go by, his $5 million “gold card” looks more like a credit card than a piece of government identification. Gold cardholders would almost singularly consist of rich foreigners. https://trib.al/HjeyBEt

“Les Misérables” was Victor Hugo’s response to a menacing, authoritarian regime—an irony that seems lost on Donald Trump, who apparently counts the musical among his favorites.

Guess who was right in the thick of the assault on @padilla.senate.gov? Corey Lewandowski. (He may have been the guy instructing that there's no recording at a press conference and seems to have realized how badly they fucked up.)

This is a clear imposition of religious doctrine on Arkansas' students. We will fight to uphold this nation’s foundational constitutional principles.

When a Christian Nationalist pastor calls genocide “an act of mercy,” believe him. This is why we fight for a secular government, not one guided by ancient holy war fan fiction.
