Newly qualified GPs are retraining as bus drivers due to a shocking lack of jobs. Meanwhile, patients are waiting weeks for GP appointments. @wesstreeting how is this happening during an NHS crisis? What a disgraceful waste of talent. The system is failing doctors and patients!

We need more doctors to #SaveOurNHS and reduce waiting lists. So why is the government restricting training spots?

Make it make sense. This is obscene

This Good Friday, doctors are the lowest paid in the hospital. £17/hour to assess, treat, & manage 100s of patients alone. 6 years of study. £100k+ in student loans. Endless responsibility. Fully qualified. Saving lives. Exhausted. This isn’t sustainable. Things must change.

A national scandal is quietly unfolding in the NHS. 1000s of doctors are being blocked from becoming Consultants & GPs because the Government is restricting training spots. The public aren’t being told. Unemployed doctors while NHS waiting lists soar is nothing short of madness.

We have a bizarre situation in Britain where the public have to wait years for their operations, yet NHS doctors are out of jobs. 20000 drs will potentially have no training job in August. These jobs are being restricted by government. Unemployed drs and rising waiting lists. 21st century Britain.

There is a massive scandal within the NHS that the public aren’t being told about. 20,000 doctors are facing the prospect of being unable to find a speciality training job this August due to the government restricting the spaces. This means drs can’t train to become specialist consultants or GPs.

Did you know that 1000s of UK trained doctors are out of jobs? Despite that, the NHS continues to employ doctors from WHO red list countries. This further worsens the doctor unemployment catastrophe in the UK. We already have UK doctors willing to work. Employ them @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social

The "Strivers v shirkers" narrative. Umm, where have we heard that before?

I challenge Wes Streeting to spend one day answering the phones in a GP practice he thinks is "coasting". I guarantee it will be the hardest he's ever worked in his life and he'll learn more about healthcare than from a thousand meetings with private healthcare lobbyists.

This attack on GPs from Wes Streeting is insulting. There are 2,294 patients per GP as of April 2024, an increase of 7.2% since 2019. Many GPs suffer from burnout. They also have only 10 min slots to deal with an increasingly complex & sicker population. Doctors are not the ones ‘coasting’.

Ever wondered why it takes months to get your scan report back? In 2024, the government reduced NHS consultant radiologist funded posts, from 518 to 152 due to ‘financial pressures’. This means that we have consultant radiologists out of jobs. This leads to delays in scan reports and treatment.

This is an utter disgrace.

Wages within the NHS are so low that the government are having to give emergency salary top-ups to NHS staff to stop them from falling below the living wage. Staff can barely afford to pay their bills, with some having to turn to food banks and credit card loans. Is it any wonder why staff leave?

Doctors in England are unable to get jobs. This year, 2680 doctors applied for paediatric training in comparison to 1583 last year. That’s an increase of 69% in just one year, for the same number of training spots (roughly 479). Wes Streeting must increase training numbers urgently.

Instead of increasing the number of ambulances, there are plans to send even fewer out in England. 999 phone advice that is often given out via a set script is not as safe as being assessed in person for some cases. What we need is investment in more staff and resources. Not more cuts.

This payslip shows the appalling low hourly rate for a doctor. Even after a 6 year medical degree, in October 2022 a second year doctor was paid £16/hr to save lives. Years later, the hourly rate of pay for an F2 doctor has risen to just above £20/hr. F1 doctors are paid £17/hr. This isn’t right.

For reference, the UK minimum wage for over 21s will be £12.21 an hour from April this year.

Proud to say that I am standing as an independent ARM division candidate for Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham. I have been on the BMA resident doctors committee for 2 years now, and have been tirelessly fighting to improve pay and conditions. Vote now at: elections.bma.org.uk
