Thanks to everyone for a fantastic virtual meeting! Shout out to the speakers, attendees, moderators and volunteers for helping make this a successful event. #Evol2025 @sse-evolution.bsky.social @systbiol.bsky.social @asn-amnat.bsky.social

As we head into Pride month, I think we can get some real headway by combining it with other options. While for many the obvious choice would be Lust, those of us more up to date on politics may easily pick Wrath as the companion. Though I am tempted by Sloth.

The fear and depression about this proposed budget are valid. BUT The President does not actually get to set a budget. The President gets to propose one. Congress actually sets it. This is a time to call your reps and make it very clear that these numbers are not acceptable.

So proud of all these outstanding early-career scientists! I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate with and/or teach six of them. #GeauxSystematicBiology #evol2025

After my post on vaccinating my children when they were babies, I got asked to have ‘nuanced’ convos with antivaxxers. No. I’m not platforming lies that led to the drop in vaccines, sick children with lifelong impacts and dead children. Vaccines save lives and protect health. Period.

And that's a wrap to Virtual Evolution 2025. 1 society symposium, 5 sessions of student award finalists, and 20 sessions of regular contributed talks, with speakers from 24 countries (analysis of attendees will take a little longer) Looking forward to seeing many of you in Athens, GA in June.

I've expressed this before, but: frogmouths really are the most muppet-looking birds. Even moreso than shoebills.

In the first session at today's Virtual Evolution, we have a few late withdrawls in both Phylogenomics and Molecular Evolution. As it so happens, they're pretty close to complementary in the genetics sense, so you can switch between the sessions in order to not have a hole in your morning talks.

Mood. Also part of why I sought out someone to talk about some issues I may have with anxiety.

So, first of all, this is an absolutely vile idea. Let's be clear on that. Second, where the hell do you draw the line? I'm from the US. Trace my ancestors out of the US, and you end up mostly* in either England or Ireland, mostly* in the 1800s but some further back. (*Not all, but most)

First day of contributed talks for Virtual Evolution 2025 is in the books. I do not envy the Hamilton Award judges having to pick among that set of talks. We reconvene at 9am Eastern for the next day of talks, featuring another 10 sessions of regular contributed talks and the Mayr award finalists.

I now have time for a lunch break, before I'll be spending the rest of the day in the Hamilton Award Talks symposia (14 speakers, so multiple sessions) in today's Virtual Evolution.

Do you have your beverage and snack of choice? Talks for the virtual Evolution begin in just over 40 minutes, with choices between Evolutionary Ecology or Phylogenetic Methods in the first round of parallel sessions.
