Our workshop series starts next week! Monday: Discovering Statistics; Tuesday: State-of-the-art meta-analysis; Wednesday: Machine learning without tears Thursday & Friday: Bayesian hypothesis testing Attend one or all of them, in person or online jasp-stats.org/2025/06/27/l...

Our digital repositories team spends a great deal of their time now simply protecting our commoned public digital resources from bots. This insatiable, aimless, destructive desire to excrete novel slop is impeding our access to — and even damaging — our cultural heritage + vetted public knowledge.

'“I don't think that people appreciate how few people are working to keep these collections online, even at huge institutions,” Weinberg told me. “It's usually an incredibly small team, one person, half a person, half a person, plus, like their web person who is sympathetic to what's going on.'

"I gotta' tell you, Jerry, I'm in way over my head."

It's not just #NIH. It's not just #NSF. It's not just #NASA. The whole scientific community has to make clear that all science across fed agencies is being destroyed in the US. We can't just ask for our particular piece of the pie. The whole pie is being thrown out - saving your bit won't work.

@danmcquillan.bsky.social has shared the text of his talk in which he applies Illich's ideas to the question of the role of the university in a world with now ubiquitous 'AI'. Here's a juicy bit.

I've posted my seminar on 'The role of the university is to resist AI', which takes as its text Ivan Illich's 'Tools for Conviviality'. danmcquillan.org/cpct_seminar...

In the "Using AI for good" session at #sips2025 this morning, we were challenged to guess which of the two text were #AiGenerated (see attached picture). 100% if those answering got it right!

Happy to share the publication of the Attentional Control Data Collection (ACDC⚡) at Behavior Research Methods. We have collected 64 data sets on congruency effects in an SQLite database. The database will hopefully grow soon, but working with open data is actually pretty complicated. rdcu.be/ethPM

World War 3 kinda sucks, but you know, it was either this or pronouns

Moral authority and the power of shame are legitimate weapons, and using them - in addition to courts, legislatures, and mass protests - is absolutely essential to winning this fight.

Just some creepy armed Mad Max guys trying to gain entry to Dodgers Stadium. ICE says it wasn’t them. DHS says they were Border Patrol. But honestly who the hell knows? They’ve given permission for any psycho to put on a ski mask, point a gun, grab people & throw them into an unmarked vehicle.

If you're a Democrat in red district in MO, TN, or OH and you'd like to run for office but are worried you'd be going it solo, I have good news. Every State Blue crowdfunds for underfunded state leg nominees in those states. If you run, know that there's a safety net made up of real people. 1/

BREAKING: The White House lashed out at the creators of this ad for "fear-mongering". It must have really struck a nerve. Maybe they don't like being outed as fascists. You know what to do: SPREAD THIS EVERYWHERE! #MAGAKidnappers

Ending tonight with another predictable story around folks who spend their time terrorizing queer children. Is *anyone* surprised by this? We could build a predictive model with just one line of code. If you have a favorite zealot-to-predator story post it below.

Counterpoint: Women are ahead of the curve on knowing AI is bullshit. www.ft.com/content/7f0f...

It should concern schools that edtech ai companies are using “TikTok influencers” to promote their products and not seeking endorsements from online safety groups, advocates or known ai experts. Because no one who cares about governance or ethics will vouch for this tech

It is sad that schools will happily invite people from TikTok or Twitter, usually white men,to give staff training about AI or whatever. But they refuse to engage with reflective non profit work that advocates for edtech governance or disinformation education. Social media hype is all they know.

I am privileged to announce the publication of the Anti-Autocracy Handbook: sks.to/autocracy 1/12

I wish people would listen to people who write & teach writing for a living. We know that there is something *extremely important* contained within the process of writing. Writing, editing, revising, getting feedback, sitting with your thoughts, changing your thoughts. Writing IS thinking.

Amazing: MIT researchers revealed how ChatGPT etc are destroying our brains and booby-trapped the report to expose those who want to use AI to ostensibly summarize the results. t.co/JXeTALBPds

New research from MIT found that those who used ChatGPT can’t remember any of the content of their essays. Key takeaway: the product doesn’t suffer, but the process does. And when it comes to essays, the process *is* how they learn. arxiv.org/pdf/2506.088...

Earlier, I posted a 🧵 about the articles that students liked in my graduate course on executive function (EF)👇. In this new 🧵 (the last one based on this class, I promise!), I thought I'd share some of the thoughts I had while teaching this course. If you’re interested in EF, read on. (1/12)

Some philosophy of mind stuff is going to become essential basic knowledge for interacting with the Internet's false agents.

Even the goslings are fed up. Pretty sure the CDC flock made it out there too. 🪿🚫👑

Springer-Nature launched a series of "Discover" journals that closely mimic MDPI titles -- sharing *identical* journal names, and likely similar business model. What is going on, and why researcher will - as always - fall for it? A 🧵 the-strain-on-scientific-publishing.github.io/website/post...

"Over four months, LLM users consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels. These results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of LLM reliance and underscore the need for deeper inquiry into AI's role in learning."

I've started to create a Google doc to compile & share cog psych teaching resources, organized by topics (e.g., attention, memory, language) & resource types. This week, I ask you to share any in-class demos you'd like to give. Please reply to this post or tag me in a separate post. Thanks!

Among other things Melissa Hortman, murdered along with her husband yesterday by a far-right assassin, was a climate champion throughout her political career. I found a few things to that effect.

Thanks for collecting these resources @amiyake.bsky.social To add to the pile, I put most of my intro to cognition course (syllabus, slides, free textbook, assignments) on this website: www.crumplab.com/cognition/ Everything is licensed on Creative Commons, feel free to copy, reuse, etc.

Virtual MathPsych/ICCM starts today! VMP2025 will be held over June 16-20, 2025, with live video conference sessions throughout the week and asynchronous content on mathpsych.org during and after the conference week. #iccmpsyched

Wait for the surprise.. 😅

📣 "Universities are not spokespersons for the AI industry...we need to resist being coopted and corrupted...We need to increase Critical AI Literacy in students, in scientists & in other professionals. This is the role that universities are duty bound to play in times of planetary crises"📣

Research on processing fluency used to be very popular with publications in Psychological Science, PNAS, etc. Now there are several prominent failed replications of fluency effects. A newest one: bsky.app/profile/dani... >

We need to ensure that the incredible organizing and inspiring courage of yesterday’s #NoKings protests continue to spread. On tomorrow’s mass call, we’ll discuss how we do that with concrete action steps to overcome authoritarianism. Please join us: www.mobilize.us/nokings/even...

it’s a good thing this happened in time for Trump’s failed parade

Proud Boy arrested for pushing protesters in Florida! Keep it up, law enforcement! Do the right thing!

Political scientist says: when millions protest, it’s not destabilizing — it’s democracy functioning. Portraying peaceful dissent as a threat? That’s a hallmark of authoritarian-style governance. The people know the difference. zurl.co/31cDH #StandUpForScience #NoKings

When NO KINGS reigns over your parade. #SAD 🤣
