If you liked TRUE BIZ, you'll love texting the governor of NJ and telling him to fund the state deaf school! ✨🌟📚🌈

My interview with the National Hispanic Latino Association of the Deaf (NHLAD) is now live on Facebook & Instagram. I discussed the nuances of mental health in our communities and the importance of culturally responsive care. Still feeling awestruck and grateful for this experience.

I hope all of you are finding work to do in this time that feels meaningful, fills you with awe, gives you a chance to be a part of something greater than yourself.

The best sign language models are those that align with deaf languaging practices. When AI models are built on sign language as used by hearing interpreters or novice hearing sign language learners, this can lead to linguistic subordination to technology. gallaudet.edu/linguistics/...

News is overwhelming. People offline don't understand what's happening. Their rights are being pulled out from under them. Print out these flyers and take it to the streets. Featuring a QR cosd that links to explainer and action items. www.disability-rights-watch.com/2025/02/12/t...

Gonna read more on this, but calling all #deafsky. This bill definitely needs to be defeated. Anyone know if folks at ISD are aware?

Tonight's NAD informative seminar, with their legal director addressing the impact of recent White House actions affecting deaf communities, is just the beginning. The organization is entering a new era of advocacy, one we haven't seen in years.

Here are three (so far) identified programs specializing in deaf services that are directly impacted by temporary funding freezes: 1) Training Interpreters for Individuals Who Are Deaf and Deaf-Blind 2) Research Related to Deafness & Communication Disorders 3) National Deaf Services Line

www.axios.com/2025/01/14/l... Clips of press conferences often get posted on social media, and they’re rarely captioned. Most of the time, the only reason I can follow the ones without captions is because ASL interpreters are standing next to the speaker caught on the camera.

Hello, my dissertation, Attitudes to ASL-English Language Contact among Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Users of ASL in the United States, is now available! #linguistics deepblue.lib.umich.edu/handle/2027....

i don’t understand how, psychologically, a person gets to a place where they interpret sign language as some kind of attack or imposition on their life. like, what the fuck is wrong with you?

This is premised on so many flawed assumptions including that: 1.) sign languages are wild human gesticulations as opposed to fully developed languages 2.) sign languages and close captions are mutually intelligible 3.) there couldn’t possibly be Deaf individuals at the actual press conference

Looking for #DisabilityJustice folks. Please make yourselves known so I can follow.

Sobering but a reflection of many convos I've had in the last year: "I used to joke with colleagues that higher education is besieged on two fronts: by fascists on one side and neoliberals on the other. As we look ahead to a second Trump administration, these two threads appear ready to converge."

Deaf people and our communities are economically exploited with little in return from birth until death. Most of this happens until the age of 18-21. After 18, you're also derided as a taxpayer burden if you dont magically overcome societal failures and barriers to get a job. Some examples below

www.nytimes.com/2024/12/29/s...

Did you know Yelp introduced a searchable “ASL-proficient” attribute? 👀 Restaurants and other businesses can add it to their Yelp page to show they have at least one staff member fluent in American Sign Language available during operating hours. #accessibility #americansignlanguage

Raising an eyebrow at Axios's Latino newsletter shutting down and the Washington Post’s The Health Brief (formerly Health 202) newsletter going on indefinite hiatus.

Recently saw an article on @chronicle.com, centering the entirely wrong thing. It's about damn time for colleges to prioritize content accessibility. 🔥 And I resent those wanting to wait for Trump to deregulate. Choosing to wait is choosing to discriminate. ashleemboyer.com/blog/college...
