"The President’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Budget proposes to terminate the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and provides $38 million to conduct an orderly shutdown of the Agency." bit.ly/4kEnEPo

And as a Jewish person, I don't want incidents like today in Boulder or two weeks ago in D.C. used as justification for preemptive clampdowns on those protesting peacefully for Palestinians. It all just needs to stop.

“The group estimated that reducing the operating budget by $900 million, as the Trump administration wants to do, would require closing 350 of the 433 parks, monuments, historic sites and other locations overseen by the Park Service… we would be witnessing the dismantling of a century-old system”

Went to a big box store today for something and a Jeep in the parking lot had a huge sign on the back that explained the meaning of habeas corpus, contextualized attacks on immigrants as an attack on all of us and called on Democrats and Republicans to join together and fight for freedom..

Manhattan Country School is asking for help. A model of Pre-8 progressive education for social justice since 1966, the school is stuck In bankruptcy court and is only allowed to pay its teachers with new fundraising. Please consider spreading the word. www.gofundme.com/f/save-mcs-p...

A group in San Diego is patrolling neighborhoods to identify potential ICE presence. They keep watch for vehicles that may belong to federal agencies, and use livestreams, radios, and social media to keep communities informed. boltsmag.org/how-vol...

Today Milford high school students participated in their graduation and then marched to the town hall in protest of Ice kidnapping their peer. #milfordma

They always show the fights at Waffle House but not the sweet side of Waffle House

We devote musicals, miniseries, and documentaries to the founders of our first republic and not to those of our second, who saw this country with clear eyes. We need fewer encomiums for Jefferson, Madison, and Lafayette. More respect for Sumner, Stevens, Bingham and Douglass (Frederick).

the revealed position of the republican party is that it thinks broad expansion of higher education — and especially its expansion for certain americans — was a mistake that must be rolled back

American Authoritarianism: Connecting Reconstruction's Collapse to Today youtu.be/gsHShkjsbZs

A radical transformation of our way of life is underway. Don’t let anyone gaslight you into thinking this administration is normal.

The intellectual crime of being against massacring starving people when they crowd aid trucks, of bombing hospitals, of targeting journalists and doctors for death, killing tens of thousands of children--all in the vain hope of avoiding repercussions from the criminals behind these atrocities.

Many graduate students are funded by NSF grants, so a massive NSF budget cut means fewer students. I just met an American master’s student at Oxford who’s interested in pursuing a PhD in marine science. I advised against returning to the US even though we have some of the best programs. 😩

Wow—this is what community looks like. It’s heartwarming to see locals rally around Buona Forchetta after it was raided by ICE on Friday. In the face of fear and cruelty, San Diegans are showing up with solidarity.

I put much work into this. DOJ is trying to block courts' access to info in #AbregoGarcia and Alien Enemies Act cases by asserting it is a "state secret." I walk through the clear case law on this topic. I provide a Table of senior officials' statements that preclude the state secret privilege.

1/We dissect Trump-Rubio's “Office of Remigration” Why it's a uniquely horrifying step “Remigration’s” roots in European far-right white nationalism The recent summit in Italy Our full discussion of topic: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CPT... Clip below⤵️ Looking forward to Comments over at YouTube.

Will America’s National Parks Survive Trump? He plans to close 350 of our parks, monuments and historic sites www.nytimes.com/2025/06/01/o...

this @adambonica.bsky.social piece deserves to be read beside the yeoman work that @donmoyn.bsky.social and @pamherd.bsky.social have been doing. The dismantling of administrative expertise is one of those stories that is so big that pro journalists with beats find it hard to focus on or explain .

OPM memo: Fed job applicants must now pledge in writing to implement Trump's political agenda. The final step in the Authoritarian playbook on the civil service: ✅ Purges disguised as "efficiency" ✅ Gut oversight agencies ✅ Weaken regulatory enforcement ➡️ Replace experts with loyalists ← UNDERWAY

The demographic cliff is here. Like right now. In 2025. We are standing at the top of the cliff.

Stephen Miller said recently that American scientific achievement in the mid-20th century owed little to immigrants, given immigration quotas at the time. Someone should tell him that from 1945- 1974, 16 of the 30 U.S. winners of the Nobel in physics were immigrants www.forbes.com/sites/stuart...

After nearly 12 weeks of siege by Israeli authorities, only a trickle of supplies has entered #Gaza. But what made it through falls far short of people’s massive needs. Unimpeded access for all humanitarian partners, including UNRWA, is urgently needed. www.unrwa.org/newsroom/off...

We are happy that our paper in @JoDemocracy is now published. We analyze Mexico's democratic erosion under AMLO, focusing on attacks on core democratic institutions, increasing militarization, and public reactions to the country's autocratization. Link: www.journalofdemocracy.org/articles/is-...

Hablar de democracia en abstracto sirve de muy poco y más cuando se ha desgastado tanto el concepto. Su contraparte sin embargo es muy evidente. Y si no, ahí están unos soldados con armas largas desalojando un espacio cultural para demostrarlo.

In #Mexico "López Obrador frequently called judges corrupt...the Supreme Court blocked some of his plans...He responded by vowing to replace the judges". Sounds like a familiar play these days? Also remember that a large percentage of the 'left' Morena, is former PRI politicians. #4T

This is a really interesting and important conversation regarding the history and future of the rule of law in the US.

"Worse Than McCarthyism": Historian Ellen Schrecker on Trump's War Against Universities & Students

The damage that the Trump administration is doing to higher education is "absolutely beyond the pale," says historian Ellen Schrecker. www.democracynow.org/2025/5/30/mc...

The lesson people infuriatingly never seem to master is that there is no creating a police state just for other people. If you create a police state with no due process for immigrants or accused criminals, then that's the system you've created for yourself.

something that stands out about this is just how cheap it is for us to have world-leading scientific capacity we spent ~6.75 trillion last year, and the combined budgets for NIH, NSF and NASA are barely more than 1% of that what an incredible waste to lose it all for a drop in the bucket

1/2 "Foreign scientists in the US are scared to publish anything perceived as critical for fear of being bundled off the street to a detention centre. Foreign scientists abroad are scared to go to the US because they have voiced criticism of the state."

I only wrote this substack *yesterday* about the dangers of being a foreign student or academic in the US, but I am already having to update it as more disappearances and visa revocations happen. christinapagel.substack.com/p/trumps-att...

The problem with writing about Gaza is that words can’t explain what’s happening in Gaza. Neither can images, even the most gut-wrenching and heartbreaking. Because what needs to be explained is the inexplicable. What needs to be explicated is the silence in the face of horror.

NEW: The Trump administration's fiscal year 2026 budget request's appendix says with no details: "The President's Budget proposes to reorganize the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and the Census Bureau at the Department of Commerce" www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

WP is slow to cover the story and not up to the task when they do. Rolling Stone puts the motive in the headline. These days @rollingstone.com is a better news source.

I am convinced Trump’s interest in firing Dr. Hayden now (vs naming replacement next year) is to control more ex officio seats on the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission. Half are cabinet secretaries. He’s already gotten rid of NARA and NEH/NEA. Library and Smithsonian are only ones left.
